Diving's fun, and btw are you all aware that BMX riding is now an Olympic sport? Anyhow, to me the signature race of these games will be the 200m(?) hurdles where the Chinese gold medalist from Athens goes up against the Cuban who beat his record. Talk about pressure on the poor Chinese guy.... Phelps' quest to match/beat Spitz will be fun, but I bet it craps out. I don't know if any of you saw the leaked video of the Opening Ceremonies, but from the snippets I saw, it looks really cool. And I normally hate opening ceremonies.

So I am looking for the swim meets and water polo matches as I already mentioned, plus the diving and the synchronized swimming. And since I have training in Tai Chi, Kung Fu, Fencing and Karate, I'll probably check in on the martial arts sports as well.

I noticed unfortunately that in the USA tryouts, they're getting into 15-year-olds territory like in gymnastics, so that may be a thing of the past, but maybe the East Europeans will come through. Jeremy Warinner: not to go all reverse Omarosa, but my favorite line from Athens was Michael Johnson (I think) dumbfounded at his gold and finally saying what everyone else was thinking: "I've never seen a white guy run that fast." Has anybody found a good concise guide to the highlights of the games? The critical contests on what days & times and so forth? Also, anybody know the story on the decathalon this year? It's the most underappreciated yet coolest event in the games, but we only see it if an American has a shot. What's the background this time around?

All I know about the decathlon, Piranha, is that it'll be held on the 21st to the 22nd. Well, the men's anyway. I had no idea that there are no women's decathlon at the games. There's a heptathlon for the women, but still. Can women not be able to compete in three more events? I hope Michael Phelps bites it and belly flops hard when he dives in the pool.

A Sanadian babe was telling me about a fantastic female hurdler when she heard I was going to be at the track session the next day. The next day, I watched this "phenom" crash into a hurdle and knock out two other racers! I watched the USA basketball team play Angola. It was the most boring POS I've ever seen. People were sleeping in the stands- and I've got pictures. That dude that knocked out the Brazilian marathon runner? Damn, he was lurking just where we almost decided to stand. The USA HQ was right underneath the acropolis and guarded by three army folks with machine guns. Great food! The Hungarian guy with the implanted fake bladder to hold "clean" urine, I saw him lift the day before he was caught. Won the silver.

I could give you a long, drawn out description of the five event competition, but there is really only one reason to watch it: The competitors have to ride an equestrian-jumping horsey deal. The great thing is that THEY ARE RANDOMLY ASSIGNED AN UNFAMILIAR HORSE from the host country's stables. This is to save money in transport costs. So the pentathletes only get a half hour or so to get acquainted with their horses, and then they have to do the jumping course. Funny as shit in Athens- guys being thrown, pissed off horses just refusing to move. Great stuff. Mark it on your Calendar.

Paula (who I love) having to drop out, Deena's emotional finish as she gets the bronze, the crazy guy pushing the lead guy, an american taking 2nd in the men's. That is certainly what I will be looking forward to for Beijing....here's hoping that Paula gets the gold!! Although ANY sport I find interesting during the olympics. Nothing like being up at 3 in the morning watching weightlifting or synchronized swimming.

It's downright awful. Beijing's thick, nasty combination of carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and assorted particulate matter is 40 times worse than the smog in Los Angeles, the U.S.'s most polluted city. Depending upon the weather, a dense yellowish haze sometimes blankets the entire metropolis. Researchers estimate that up to 400,000 Chinese die prematurely from air pollution annually, with as many as 25,000 deaths in Beijing alone. Why so much smog? China has never paid much attention to air pollution, and its ferocious economic development has made its bad air much worse. In the seven years since Beijing was awarded the Olympics, which begin Aug. 8, the nation's industrial output has increased 80 percent. Most of this growth has been fueled by primitive, coal-fired furnaces and boilers, which spit out tons of choking hydrocarbons. There are also about 3.3 million cars on Beijing's roads-triple the number a decade ago-belching noxious gases. Natural factors are at work, too. Dust storms in nearby deserts throw tons of soil into the air, and because mountains surround Beijing on three sides, pollutants tend to stay trapped there, like soup in a bowl. What does all this mean for athletes? Trouble, in the form of labored breathing, reduced metabolic efficiency, and general misery. Last September, Adam Craig of the U.S. mountain biking team dropped out of a training race in Beijing, citing the pollution. "My lungs stopped working," he said. "It started with a routine deep breath on a descent, which produced a sharp pain and a fit of hacking, then progressed rapidly to a state where I was unable to take more than a quarter of a breath." More recently, four American boxers jogging outside in Beijing developed breathing problems. So they began training by running up and down the corridors of their hotel. Jarrod Shoemaker, a U.S. triathlete, says Beijing air is so dirty that you can taste it. "You can feel the grit in your teeth," he says. "In 2007 we wore masks when we weren't racing." The swim team stays in Singapore, the cycling team stays in Korea, etc. They all said they will "check in" and then immediately go back to their training camps and just fly in for their events and leave as soon as possible. The dr. said that the face masks will do nothing for any of the athletes to help with the pollution. They explained all about it, its from the industrial areas to the south of there, which they didn't do a thing about, or can't. It was also interesting learning from the dr's just exactly what that pollution can do to your lungs, your blood, and your heart. I wouldn't think humans would survive long if that continued like that for many more years. It is mind boggling that the Olympic committee would ever have the games in a place so detrimental to the health of top athletes like that. wonder if Mark Spitz will be there?? Also, when Phelps gets to 4 more Gold this time, he will have more Gold medals than any other person ever in the Olympics years combined, Spitz also holds that record right now (9, he won two Gold in 1968) as well as most Gold in one Olympics. And Spitz was not even invited to be there, not by the Olympics Committes or NBC, which is just dumb, he should be commentating, I would love to hear what he said during each of the swimming events, he should be there. In the interview, Spitz said he would very much like to be there. I love how the Digital cable has that station where you have all the screens showing different events going on you can watch, and also offers the on demand station for free to just go to watch all the different events whenever you want to. Most everything is going on when people in the U.S. are asleep. I would recommend to all Sucksters- watch the modern Pentathlon.
