To me it doesn't feel like much of a twist especially since people have given others on rewards since Borneo. And in Guatemala, Exile Island and China, there was the 'compete for immunity or feast' twist. Added.

Whether they helped or hurt players you like? Then there are some so minor they really make little impact on any of those dimensions. The tribal almst always adds entertainment (unless you like pagongings), though some versions of it are less fair and sometimes players we like are unlucky. To the purists I would add - there is nothing fair about getting pagonged simply because the producers assigned weaker challenge performers to your tribe,

You know, along the lines of how well thought out and how effective it was, but if I think something is complete bullshit, then it's usually not entertaining. That's actually why I wanted to do this, when I look back I keep wanting a game of just the way how it used to be. No twists. Thought alot of them were completely rediculous, but I'm pleasantly surprised to realize (after listing them out) that Burnett actually came up with some good ideas. Think of this as a game design menu, when you pick your favorite rules and options in each category. 1) Tribal switches - began in Africa, many variations including send your strongest, captains pick new teams, random shuffle, optional mutiny, and a straight up pick-em (S16) which is probably fairest. - their purpose is to shake thing up and prevent two solid tribes and a pagonging postmerge. 2) Opening twists - began in Thailand, variations include oldest pick tribes, tribes divided by gener, age, or race, one big tribe for first 3 days, 4 tribes that last for 1-2 episodes until 2 real tribes are formed, and clothes on their back - their purposes it to attract viewers and make season seem original, but also to create cross-tribal bonds that may make postmerge more interesting. 3) Merge twists - variations on merge include tribal ambassadors meet, two tribes one beach, delayed merge, and one episode tribal reshuffle when merge is expected (ASS, S14) 4) Immunity - first very minor twists (immunity can be tranferred, no endurance at F3, jury played for immunity once) - then hidden idol, rules governing idol, ways idol is hidden, players immune due to exile or kidnapping - purpose of idol to protect stronger players with 2nd immunity and create suspense, intrigue, and surprises at TC 5) Exiles and kidnappings - usually done along with idol twist as a way from someone to hunt for the idol or get clues 6) Tiebreaking procedures - previous votes, purple rock, firemaking tiebreaker, whatever they'll do in case of a tie jury vote 7) Endgame and jury format - move to F3, expanded jury, play out ICs to F2 when player medivaced 8) Expanded game - more than 16 players, making various kinds of double-boot episodes necessary - point is to have 14 episodes without a recap, and insurance against people leaving between TCs 9) Casting twists - racial quoatas, applicants vs recuits, bringing back all-stars, casting minor celebrities (Gary H, Ashley M) 10) That covers everything except two huge twists that were widely criticized - Outcasts come back, and Rich vs Poor tribes. - Outcasts did succeed in shaking up postmerge gameplay, but twist would have gone over better in a season where a lot of popular players were booted premerge - Rich vs Poor was completely unfair and pointless. Final 3 Seasons: Cook Islands, Fiji, China Memorable Quote: "Mmhmm." (Cassandra's reaction upon finding out about the final three twist.) There are a lot of twists that the producer's have thrown in to deliberately fuck up the integrity of the game. This is a point blank example. For season after season, Survivor had been running great. Even in a mediocre season, the end game scramble to reach the finals was always exciting to watch. No one could just make an alliance early in the game and just sit down enjoying the ride. Everybody was on their toes because only two people would be able to sit in front of the jury. It worked well because no winner was like any others. Unfortunately, casual fans were complaining about their favorites not winning, and all this "best player always finishes third" bullshit started. So Burnett and co. decided to implement a final three, because they no longer wanted the "best player" to finish third. When it was first announced, I was pissed off, and the showing on TV didn't help. Becky was completely ignored, and we still didn't even get to see all of the questions towards the other two. Sure it was a close vote, so what? It only took one season for Earl to kill two goats in the end. Exciting stuff right. I had already hated those two seasons due to other circumstances, but it really killed China for me. I thought it helped revive it until the finale where the editors were smart enough to only have four people left and one boot. That meant we had to listen to Denise try and save herself for almost half of the damn episode. This is the worst twist of all time mainly for almost killing the integrity of the game and for making three boring final tribal councils since so many questions had to be cut. The second worst twist of all time is... 64. Raro Double Boot (Bottle Twist) Seasons: Cook Islands Memorable Quote: "You've just voted out one member of your tribe, you will now vote out another. That's not fun." -Parvati Another instance of breaking the integrity of the game, and a case what some may think is rigging by the producers. I have no idea, but I'm not going to bash them for what it could be. They need to be bashed for one of the dumbest idea imaginable. Parvati said all that needed to be said. For losing one challenge, two people leave. It wasn't fun for the players. It wasn't fun for the viewers, and it wasn't even fun for Probst. There's many reasons why I hated this, might as well throw them all out. One is that I hate double boot episodes in general (although they have had a couple good twists to go with them) because it takes away from character development. This proves just that. Rebecca didn't even get her final words shown. Are you freaking kidding me? Since I don't want to go off on a tangent bashing the bloated cast right now, let's just say I wasn't pleased with it. Another reason is that it forces a late merge, which I can only deal with if the pre merge is entertaining. I'm pretty sure Cook Islands wasn't that. Thirdly, what happens if Aitu lost? Two people go home? Does that mean we'd get even more episodes of the "woe is me" crap from Yul and Becky? Great. Oh and another thing, when I hear about the Aitu 4's huge underdog story, I keep forgetting that they ONLY WON TWO challenges as a foursom. Mainly because I had blocked this twist out of my mind for good. Smart move starting this list to relive all these joyous memories. Basically, all I can say is the bottle twist was complete bullshit. Also, it didn't help that besides Candice, Jenny was the only one I could tolerate on Raro. That was all I had time to post for now. What do you guys think? Any thoughts or predictions?

In the first stage, the jury votes to eliminate one of the last 3 who becomes the final juror. If there is a tie after a revote, they have a fire starting tie breaker just like with Final 4 ties. The second stage would revert to the regular Final 2. The 2 stage approach would reduce (but not entirely) eliminate the problem of a goat being dragged to the Final 2 as the first jury vote would eliminate the worst goat.

Posts: 2954 (07/11/08 4:48 PM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Before I get to the lowest 2 twists, I just wanted to say a few thoughts regarding Australia's F3 immunity challenge and whether it was a twist or not. I for one would definately go in the NO category. For one thing, this was so early in the show's history, there wasn't a precedent set for the final challenge, so how can you say that this was a twist? All you had to go on was a single challenge in Borneo, and there was no indication whatsoever from that that it was meant to always be that way at the time. And second, the sheer fact of the matter is that many of the final immunity challenges have not been endurance. Amazon was balance, as was Pearl Islands, Guatemala, Exile Island and Cook Islands. Vanuatu and Fiji were all about being a male with the most upper body strength. With so many non-endurance final challenges, there's just no way in my mind that we can call Australia final challenge a twist. Now for the two lowest ranked twists. I for one would put one twist below those two, that being the Haves vs. Haves Not twist. A large number of people in the game got huge benefits over the other tribe only for winning a single challenge or being lucky enough to be the random tribe picked to get the camp at the switch. As a result, the tribe with the great camp won every single immunity challenge, and all but one reward challenges. If you're looking at the course of the entire series over these 16 seasons, I don't think any single twist has had such an absurdly negative impact. One tribe getting all the benefits. Living like kings. Like they're not even living on Survivor. The other tribe living with absolutely nothing. And not only was it completely unfair, but it also led to one of the, if not the most boring pre-merge in the show's history. At least with Palau it was a first. Here seeing the same tribe lose every single immunity challenge was excrutiating. I absolutely despise the F3, as anyone who has discussed the matter with me in LTS certainly knows. I for one didn't necessarily have a problem with it as a one time twist though. If we're talking about F3 as a permanent switch to the game? Then certainly. No questions asked, it deserves to be this low. As a one time thing in Cook Islands only I wouldn't really have all that beef with it because it would be something original, something with not really any huge negative impact to the game (since F2 would be back the next season) and would prevent a Yul or Ozzy unanimous win against Becky. As a permanent twist, it certainly sucks ass as it doesn't solve any of the problems of the F2, reduces jury time considerably, and reduces the change of power shifts. And the bottle twist... ah, about as likely a 'rigging' event as there has ever occured in Survivor. C'mon, aside from Ravu Rules, does anyone honestly believe that if Aitu lost that challenge that they'd be voting out two people? How much do you want to bet that the bottle would have said "You don't have to vote out anyone" instead? Like F3, this shattered one of the core principles of the game, that you only vote out one person if you lose one immunity challenge. Losing two for losing one challenge, and have it be a one time event was completely unfair and obviously completely changed the course of the game. I'm looking forward to seeing pre-merge jury members on this list sometime soon too! :P Its no surprise that so many hate CI and Fiji, its where almost all of the worst twists ever originated from. I liked the way the last vote worked, with the one person picking who gets voted out. I just think that they shouldn't change the game in a way like this. It's too big of a thing to change. And I agree about the bottle too. Not fair at all. Maybe it's because I hated the Aitu four so much that I hate this twist, just because this twist reminds me of them. I wish Aitu would have lost and had to vote out two people. Then maybe Ozzy would have been gone. Any of them could have left and we would win. Most boring tribe ever.
