Stone & Co lost the rights to make an American version of the show and ABC couldn't make it or the original Belgum-Based Production company would have sued
There's no denying the poor job ABC has done in handling the show. They went from casting civilians for Mole 3 in late 2002 to shifting to a condensed celebrity format to cancelling the show outright after decent ratings without as much as a press release. If it was as simple as losing the rights to the show, I'm sure ABC/Stone would have said as much.
