Overall, Big Brother 10's Sunday episode viewership had an increase of 41.2 percent when DVR viewers were factored in. However, that wasn't the greatest increase between live viewers and DVR viewers. Stone & Co. have been talking with ABC, although no deals have been made. Don't expect one to come soon, either. No word yet on whether the show will
remain with ABC or move to another network. The production company seems to be open to the idea of shopping the show around. However, there are certain execs
at ABC who love the show, so it appears that ABC isn't quick to get rid of it. But like I mentioned before, if they do axe it, they'll probably do it
quietly. They know that the show has a dedicated following (although you wouldn't notice that by visiting this place), so they'd be smart not to
publicly address its cancellation.
The "Save The Mole" contest that Stone & Co. held on Youtube ended on August 2nd. No one came close to the 500,000 views that was required in order to win the prize, an all-expenses paid trip to have dinner with Scott Stone and Jon Kelley and pitch show ideas to them. The attempt to generate some last-minute buzz in the show was seen as a flop for the most part, although I would bet that the people who made a video and make it to the semi-final round of next season (assuming there is one) will have a slight advantage, since the producers will recognize them immediately. It's interesting that the production company went with a viral campaign, since it was the first marketing strategy that ABC used to generate buzz in the show (the 1-second "flash teasers"). However, it was probably the only option left since other forms of advertising (TV, print) are done by ABC and viral marketing, while risky, is very cheap (the cost was basically web hosting and paying someone to make/update the site and upload videos onto Youtube). |

Interesting post. Thanks. I think the show is better suited for cable anyhow. Maybe ABC Family would take it. They haven't had a truly family oriented show
in years anyhow, and it could draw in a new audience.

The show's premiere date was bumped from May 26th to June 2nd one month prior to the premiere. After a ratings flop, one of ABC's top execs blamed the lack of ratings on the pre-premiere marketing strategy used. To top this all off, the finale went up against the Olympics (as a result of postponing one of the episodes to accommodate a 3-hour Bachelorette finale). To make your head hurt even more from reading this anti-logic, some of ABC's top execs have publicly stated their love for the show, yet they continue to mishandle it. The Mole is the kind of reality show that could serve as a flagship program for ABC, along with Dancing with the Stars. Why they continue to treat it as an afterthought is beyond me. |

ABC has taken down their dedicated site for The Mole along with the show's message board, nearly two months after the season finale. While this isn't unusual, shows like The Bachelorette, which ended around the same time, still have an active site. High School Musical, which ended a few weeks after The Mole, has also been removed from abc.com. Also, Nicole will be on Reality Check Radio talking about FOX's Really Awards that she attended and (presumably) any updates regarding The Mole. You can catch her on Monday, October 6 @ 11pm EST. Here's the thing, Ballsy.
The "pre-premiere marketing strategy" might have worked so well that it failed. There was not a lack of preseason Mole promotion. Anyone watching ABC would have had a hard time missing the quick cuts and enigmatic inserts intended to intrigue viewers into finding out more about the show. For a budget show it was a budget campaign. Two seconds here, five seconds there. The problem was that the people who were most likely to see those very brief ads and respond were already the show's core audience. What the show needed was a new invitation to a broader audience. The end result of that initial strategy was a loyal core they would have had anyway but few gainers. Any show will benefit from a great lead-in. The question is not which will show the greatest percentage increase in viewership but which will pay the greatest dividends. Cut production costs and another season of The Mole could make good summer filler (although ABC did go on a bit of a spending spree/orgy, resulting in more shows in the till than they know how to fuck up). |
