My neighbor's wife died yesterday

She recently signed up for a Senior Service deal. Every day she is supposed to call them before noon to check in. If she hasn't called by noon, they call her. If she doesn't answer, they start calling people on her list till they find someone home. I'm the second name on her list. I have keys to her house. If I get the call, I'm supposed to go over there and find out what's going on... or not going on. She's working on a contact list for me and the other folks who have keys. I had to point out to her that I don't know who to call AFTER I call 911. Or who to call if there is no point in calling 911. We've been good neighbors/friends for many years. I owe her this favor. But I dread that phone call.

We used to live in a neighborhood FILLED with the elderly. We checked on three people. Now that we've moved, they're on their own. Or their deadbeat, nevercalls children will be on the hook.

It was creepy, but I was surprised she lasted that long. They'd been married since like, the dawn of time. My dad passed away 8 months after my mother died. He had just been given a stress test a month prior, and told he had the heart of a 50 yr old, and yeah...he died of a heart attack. They had been married fifty-one years. Thankfully I come from a long line of eye-talians, so there was no usual midwest cuisine brought over by relatives. No jello, no ham buns or macaroni salads.....but pasta and booze...lots and lots of booze.
