Have Any OT'ers Traveled to Thailand?

Go. Bangkok's insane and those beaches are among the most beautiful I've ever seen -- rent "The Beach" with Leo, which was filmed there (Ko Phi Phi & Ao Maya) and you'll see what I mean. But... that area was ground zero for the tsunami, so I don't know what it's like now, but I'm certain the Thais will flip out having tourists returning. Look into one of the round the world fares that Cathay Pacific or Air Malaysia offer. If you find one where your hub is Bangkok, snag it -- these things used to be only $1K or so. Hit Lonely Planet's forums for more detail. If you start a thread there with "planning 14 days in Thailand, what to do" you'll get the best & most current information available. You might want to buy their Thailand guide beforehand, too -- it's the best. Go!

Posts: 2024 (06/28/08 12:37 PM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	I've been looking more into this, the past few days, basically everything is paid for, its a tour group for college students (18-26yrs old) for 14 days, and you have guided sightseeing tours to various places, and then you usually have the afternoon and evening off to do your own venturing/more sightseeing. You also get a few free days too. I've read over the itinerary and I think I'd enjoy it! Of course there are other places too that aren't on the itinerary that I'd want to see/visit, with free days/afternoon/evenings off it'd give me plenty of time. I believe the trip spends about 5-6 days in Bangkok, 3 days in Chiang Mai, a few days in Kanchanaburi, Phitsanulok and a few days south of Bangkok at the beaches. The more I read about certain places, the more I really want to go! It looks amazing!

It's way too loud and the beaches are packed. The Similian Islands were terrific. I have footage of dolphins following our speed boat for 10 minutes.

I thought I read somewhere that the beach the used was nasty and covered with trash and needles and it had to be cleaned up to be used for the movie.

Ao Maya's actually a national park, and filming on it provoked some dispute between conservationists and the producers, the former saying that it shouldn't be disturbed and the producers saying the above and that they had cleaned it up and improved it. All I can say is that when I was there, it was nothing short of paradise.

I've been reading about this and the idea of being able to be so close to real live tigers and getting the chance to pet them and even interact with the tiger cubs interests me. I've got quite a few video's up on youtube of this place, just curious if anyone has went here?

It really depends what you want to do as the country is so diverse and has it all. If you want nice beaches then head down south. Stay away from Phuket - its very overrated. Head for somewhere like Koh Tao or Koh Phi Phi. If you are going down that way time it so that you can nip over to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party. Its full of backpackers but you really should experience it at least once in your life. Check it out at http://fullmoonparty-thailand.com/ For quieter beach areas head to Krabi or Koh Samet. If you love cities then Bangkok is one of the best. So much to do there. Cheap accomodation is on Koh San Road although these days you need to head off of the road to get a real bargain. The bigger hotels are all in Sukumvit near the Night Bazaar and the red light area. lol. The shopping is fantastic, the markets are amazing and there are lovely shopping malls stocking all the big labels. Defo go to the floating markets, the bridge over the River Kwai and the temple compex in the centre of Bangkok and spend an evening at the Vertigo bar and restaurant 70 floors up in the air. The viiew is stunning!! For partying in the evening head to the Bed Super Club, Q Bar and the Ministry of Sound. If you are in to trekking and activites head up north to the Chaing Mai/Rai area. Elephant riding, jungle trekking in the mountains, bamboo rafting. Go visit the Golden Triangle and if you are feeling adventurous hire yourself a long boat and go up the Mekong Delta to Mai Hon Son and stay a couple of nights with the Karen Long Necked Hilltribe. That is quite the cultural experience!!! We had a blast there - got to smoke some opium with an old woman in the village. We swapped - I gave her my Marlboro and she gave me her pipe!! lol If you want to get away from all of the tourists and go to a totally Thai only town, head to Korat. You will not see another Westerner. All the action centres round the shopping mall and a club called "The Fun". Its hysterical!! So yeah if you only have 14 days you need to pick your area first and then decide what you want to do. If you want any advice or recommendations feel free to PM me.

I have traveled around the world and Thailand is still my favourite for holidays because the country is beautiful and the people are beautiful, and by that I mean friendly and fun and non-judgmental. Besides that I like a Buddhist country.
