I keep my own time records, and I bill clients for my work at 10-minute intervals. I'm too generous I guess, considering others in my field bill simply by the hour. So if Jane only works 15 minutes on a task or a phone call, she still bills the full hour. That kind of ticks me off, but that's how they do it. However, I also require a flat contract fee that some of the others do not. I've only had one tell me the flat fee was not acceptable, but after I laid out the time differences and showed him he was saving money over the by the hour billers, he hired me. I've found that most common tasks can be done in 10 minutes or less and my clients are more than willing to pay for it in small doses. I also give them the option if buying "units" in advance. A "unit" is a 10-minute interval basically. If they pay for it in addition to the flat fee they pay a lower rate. It works for me because I get more operating capital up front, and they get a lower price.
