Question for the Time Clock Punchers |

We've had an issue come up at work, and I'm curious.
Do you get paid for every minute you're on the clock, or is there a seven-minute grace period either way? |

punch in even 1 minute late and you're docked 15 minutes. Punch out on a 10 minute mark and it's rounded off to the nearest quarter.

I'm salaried but I'm the IT person who sets up the system (really cool software btw). It lets us choose what the settings are. I don't know about
clocking in early, but we have the grace period - 8 minutes I think. But I can turn that off at anytime so don't abuse it!

Our clock has a 7 minute grace period. When I work my shift, 10:00 pm till 6:30 am, I have from 21:53 till 22:00 to punch in. If I punch out at 6:38 I get 15
minutes overtime.

Paid for every minute we're punched in.. we're allowed to punch in early if we want to, especially if the store's opening and we show up early. I
think the earliest is like ten minutes. Nothing's docked if you punch in a couple minutes late.. but if you punch in too late or too early it
won't take you and you gotta get someone to do it through the computer or override your punch. idk how many minutes exactly.

It depends on what kind of time clock it is and the settings. An electronic time clock can be set to the second. Usually the older ones that actually
"punch" the time on a card, are set to a specific grace period determined by the manufacturer.

arcticjim68 wrote: Yeah, that's the way we did it -- up until they hired this bitch of a bookkeeper who decided that the LAWYERS were getting screwed if we worked 8 minutes over and were paid for 15. Of course, the bitch is too stupid (and so are the lawyers) to figure out that WE are the ones who got screwed if we worked seven minutes over 'cause we got nothing extra. So now we are getting paid for every minute over and docked for every minute under. Except they don't want to pay any overtime, so they are going to shit when they find out they're paying time and a half for every minute now, when before, they didn't have to. Oh, and did I mention these were LAWYERS? People who bill to the tenth of an hour?
It's a total crock of shit, and I can't wait until it hits the fan when they find out they're paying me two minutes of overtime for this week.
Next paycheck I'm upping it to 10.

I work in a huge hospital, and they JUST put in the time clock about 4 years ago. Before then we filled out timesheets, and it was a bit of an honor system for
us late night workers. I was glad when they did put in the time clock though, because I'm always on time, but before we had to punch an acuall clock one of
my co-workers used to show up 20 to 30 minutes late every day and sign in for his regular start time. Nobody ever called him on it because there were no
managers there when we started, and I'm no tattle tale so management never knew. Now he's gotta get his ass there ontime.

I'm lucky because I'm a paralegal, so I have way more freedom than the secretaries. For instance, I strolled in today at 9:07, because I had worked
through lunch earlier in the week and I knew I had extra time that I could use. It's great having that so flexible. If people are a few minutes late,
it's no big deal, but they concentrate more on us working 7.5 hours a day (yes, they pay overtime after 37.5 hours).

I keep my own time records, and I bill clients for my work at 10-minute intervals. I'm too generous I guess, considering others in my field bill simply by
the hour. So if Jane only works 15 minutes on a task or a phone call, she still bills the full hour. That kind of ticks me off, but that's how they do it.
However, I also require a flat contract fee that some of the others do not. I've only had one tell me the flat fee was not acceptable, but after I laid out
the time differences and showed him he was saving money over the by the hour billers, he hired me. I've found that most common tasks can be done in 10
minutes or less and my clients are more than willing to pay for it in small doses. I also give them the option if buying "units" in advance. A
"unit" is a 10-minute interval basically. If they pay for it in addition to the flat fee they pay a lower rate. It works for me because I get more
operating capital up front, and they get a lower price.
I haven't punched a clock in years... thank goodness. |

Haha An ex-job it counted for every minute. The job I have now, we just write in our hours on time-sheets (I have 3... Page, Sundays and Clerk.. all different
kinds of pay, that's why three). And people will know if you don't come in on a day you are signed to work.. it's group work.

Well I no longer have to deal with billable hours in my former legal profession.
We always rounded off to the nearest quarter hour. Time spent on billable hours report was charged to the firm |

We have a 7 min window. I get paid the same whether I clock in at 7:53 or 8:07.

Exactly. That's how we did it.
So yesterday I spent 20 minutes figuring out exactly what time I had to leave in order not to have overtime. I ended up with the two extra minutes because the time clock is off from my computer. Yeah, this is SUCH a better way. |
