Anyone see Genesis in the early 80's? They were pretty fucking good live, in open air concerts.

Biggest surprise for me was Journey at Mountain Aire in Calaveras County in...86? I forget, but something like that. But Steve Perry was pitch perfect for 2
and 1/2 hours. I was never a big Journey fan, but they were pretty impressive.

ilikelissie wrote: Truth. I paid $10 to see Stephen Malkmus, The New Pornographers, and My Morning Jacket in 06. My friend and I went to see Malkmus and The New Pornographers and didn't know anything about My Morning Jacket. We only stuck around for My Morning Jacket since they were there and were gonna leave if it sucked. And, well...damn. They were incredible. I ended up seeing MMJ three more times that year. |

Sting at Red Rocks 1993 (Any concert I've seen at Red Rocks has been phenomenal)
Bon Jovi - MGM Las Vegas 2008, stupidly expensive and worth every penny |

2 best were pleasant surprises, both at small venues which was the key.
Jerry Garcia Band, at some small theatre in DC. Robert Hunter, the opening act was even better. And the best surprise, George Thorogood and the Destroyers. It was in a small bar in Baltimore. I stood 2 feet from the mike. There was no stage, so George played the whole gig 5 feet in front of me. I estimate an audience of 100 or less. Worst: Dead at Giants Stadium the 1st time. Willie Nelson opened up. Regrets: Allman Brothers - Merrywood? MD After putting in a 12 hour shift, not eating all day then drinking JD with the rednecks, I fell asleep waiting for the queue to the loo to subside before the show began. Woke up just in time to see my group leaving the main gate. So I missed out on AB live. |

Oh, I forgot about Sting. I saw him in Reno in 87 or so when he was still touring with Branford and Kenny Kirkland and those guys. That was a pretty sweet
show.

Jethro Tull always played their asses off in concert. The best surprise for me was Climax Blues Band, they were good live.

I saw Sting on that tour too.
RPI Fieldhouse...shitty seats and it was like 3 degrees out side so the place was freezing. Had a great time. |

I've seen lots of good ones. Sat through an all day thing of bands I didn't like (Oingo Boingo? Really?) so I could see the Police at Oakland Stadium.
I'm pretty sure it was a Day On The Green. I was completely blown away by them.
Worst is easy. The US Festival. Went to see Van Halen. It was hot and dirty and crowded and sucky. Then Van Halen came on and David was drunk off his ass and couldn't remember the words, etc. Total waste of a weekend. |

Shit, the US Festival was legendary among my group of friends when I was a kid.
We all wished we could have been there. |

Ramones (alot in the 80s)
Replacements (early 80s outdoor show at college) R.E.M. (82 -- very small venue) Police/Joan Jett and lots of others (old Comiskey Park --81?) Talking Heads (NYC 79) Sex Pistols (San Fran 78 -- I have no idea why my father thought it would be a good idea to let an older cousin take myself and my brother to this show but i was unforgetable) Worst: Macy Gray opening for David Bowie either 04 or 05 -- trainwreck Grateful Dead -- I was dragged to too many shows -- Yeesh Billy Idol -- mid 80s in Chicago. He was soo intoxicated he couldn't stand or sing. He just mumbled and swore. He was arrested after the show for peeing from a balcony onto fans exiting the show |

I saw Oingo Boingo for a Halloween show somewhere...Santa Cruz maybe? They were okay. Nothing special. I remember being underwhelmed.

street.
.................... The Tubes at Bridgeport Jai Alai was very good. Early 80's. Agree with the Tull critique. ALWAYS played here on Halloween, awesome show.

I forgot the first Lollapalooza -- we were in the box next to the band box where all the bands would hang before and after playing. Spent the whole day hanging
out with Jane's Addication, Pearl Jam, Ice T and all the others -- totally awesome.
