The game's theme was out of the location and the challenges are simple.
It's also hilarious that Jiffy's fashion sense then was very WTF like Sally Schuman.
I still think that it's one of the best casting ever though.

I was 13 then when I 1st watched Borneo, The only thing I remembered about it is Colleen's cuteness, So I decided to download it from tudou and when I
rewatched it, I just realized how crappy the editing was. People are having confessionals about something not showed on Tv. Jiffy's hosting was terrible
then and there's a lot of annoying tutorials and voiceovers about the game.

I don't agree.Except for them reusing stock footage,I thought the editing was pitch perfect, and Jeff acted appropriatly for a guy new to the job.

I first saw Borneo when I was in first year high school on a local TV network Studio 23 which was a part of "Exposed" series. I first watched Borneo
on AXN. The episode that aired was Jenna's boot, which the immunity challenge uncover the logo of Survivor which Rudy won.
I became a fan since Australian Outback which three months after the cable installed in my new house. |

The reason the editing seems "crappy" is because it was done in 2000 and was the first of it's kind. One man's trash is another man's
treasure, so although you might describe the editing as crappy, a lot of others view it as real, classic and brilliant.

I wouldn't call it crappy, but I would certainly call it amateurish. I don't think Burnett and company knew what they were doing until about the
fourth episode. Not that I blame them, without there being a template for this sort of thing and all, but I still think the first two episodes of Survivor are
almost unwatchable.

It looks awkward. They didn't know if they were a documentary or a drama yet. There was no such thing as reality TV, so they were basically making it up
as they went along. Some of the dialogue scenes, in particular, go on waaaay longer than they probably should.. The gross food challenge in episode 2 was
shot with basically one camera and it was at the completely wrong angle.
I loved Borneo the first couple times I watched it. But you watch the premiere of Australia, and then you follow it up with the premiere of Borneo, and it is like night and day. It is a totally different show. They learned a lot in 13 episodes. |

I thought the butok ic looked good. And whats wrong with lots of dialogue? I don't know, maybe Im old fashioned, but I like cinema verite rather then what
we have now,not that Borneo was that exactly, but a good copy

Oh I agree. I would much rather have Borneo than what we have now. I'm just saying that as good as Borneo was, everything they did well the first season,
they did better the season season. I think Australia's production values topped Borneo's in just about every regard.

Well,it was more "epic",I agree with you there. but I thought the editing was two dimensional on Australia."Good vs evil",typfied as
Colby,Tina,ELizabeth, and Rodger vs Jerri and occasionally Keith.Borneo was much more realistic I thought

Borneo was more like a docudrama. Australia added the soap opera aspect. It started going downhill after that. Africa started the twist gimick trend and that's where it got away from what it should be. |

There's no question that Borneo production level was lower then Australia.

Honestly, I think the biggest early mistake was mismatch in strength between Tagi and Pagong. In theory, Pagong should never lost even to Tagi in any
challenges. Even BB could have kick Rudy's ass (BB is like a foot taller and 10 years younger). Who is Richard's equal? Joel? Greg? Gerverse?
Man for man, Pagong was a superior tribe. |

Rejected Reality wrote: I disagree that it changed from what it should be. If it had stayed like Australia and Borneo we would most likely not have the show today (sure some would love that). The show had to change in order for it to not get bland. I'll say this until the show dies, that we would all be wishing for some type of format change if the show was still 16 people, no twists, no swaps. It was the natural course of events. Do I wish they still had the same type of editing as they did in Marquesas, Africa, Australia? Hell yeah, but the twists would eventually have been needed, maybe not as soon as they did them but eventually they would have had to. I do like rewatching Borneo, during easter weekend 2007 I spent the whole weekend watching the whole season. It was great. Out of all the Survivor DVD's I have it is probably the most rewatched one. The Colleen boot episode it epic and remains one of my favorite episodes of the entire series. |

I agree that twists are needed to keep every season from being a Pagonging, but still, do we really need 4-5 twists per season? They could easily just have
one twist every season like they used to back in Marquesas and Africa. Just throw a "random disc tribe swap" into episode 3 or 4, and that should be
more than enough. Everything beyond that is just overkill. Once Survivor became more about the twists and less about the people, I think it started to lose
itself. There is no need to ever have a double boot episode.

"Unwatchable" is probably stretching it, but the editors certainly found their groove starting around episode 4. Though I do think they perfectly
captured the dynamics of the Pagong tribe in episode 2. We rarely have these days. I know I'm not the only one who misses the days when a tribe had more
than one story going on in a single episode.

SenseiKreese wrote: The first season with multiple twists was Survivor Pearl Islands which many (including myself) hold as the best season of the show. The success of Survivor Pearl Islands is probably to blame for the emphasis on twists. Most of the twists, I find to be gimmicky and I don't care for them (double boots, 2 contestants not picked for tribes, ethnic based tribes, small tribes based on age/gender, message in a bottle, Exile Island, comfort vs. hardship etc.). Aside from the twists they had in Pearl Islands, the only other twist that I liked was tne multiple Hidden Immunity Idols as they were implemented in Fiji (after votes are cast but before the votes are read). China was a decent season because there wasn't an overabundance of twists. |

Jeff P3 wrote: Exactly. The main problem with the show today is it's too singularly focused on one fabricated story line based on the ending, that most of the time just isn't interesting. Just from insider clips alone, there are so many more interesting things that should be shown instead of another bland strategy-based confessional from the winner or endless footage of puzzle-collecting. |
