It's like that on all reality shows where there are judges, and each episode they try to justify what they do. On the other hand, if I may be the devil's advocate here, there must be something lost in the editing room that we're just not able to see. And it makes me wonder if the producers didn't like the judges too much if so much negativity is on them and not on the owners and their dogs. Sure dogs don't always listen to their owners and obey their commands, and it could be despite how well the owners and their dogs get along which is probably what we saw with Travis and Presley last night.

Not because he deserves it, but because they want the "cute guy & funny puppy" that they THINK everyone loves to be the winner. For godsakes they even have him jumping into the logo during the intro to the show as they say "Greatest American Dog"! If not actually "rigged", they are definitely attempting to manipulate the ending by the ridiculously inconsistent judging. Too bad. I love all the dogs and this COULD be a great show, but they've ruined it with the stupid (and borderline abusive) "challenges" and bogus judging. Andrew FTW!! (Too bad it's gonna be Presley, though)

They didn't say what the commands should be, but it certainly gave the judges grounds to judge the human behavior and not simply the dog performance. I was personally VERY impressed with what Presley did. It's not that big a deal that a figurine like Andrew (or a robot like Galaxy) would stay put. Andrew has never shown much interest in ANYTHING other than Laurie, so it's not like he actually faced any temptation, here. Presley did. He loves to play. He loves to eat. He loves other people. Every instinct in his body was screaming at him to run out of that triangle. On top of that, he's a puppy. Puppies simply don't have the same mental abilities or impulse control as adult dogs do. You wouldn't expect Andrew to have the same physical abilities as Presley, right? So I'm not sure why you can't cut Presley some slack for his immaturity. It's no more his fault than Andrew's size/strength is his... The fact that Travis was able to keep Presley's focus through two of the three contestants' attempts to distract him was pretty damn good! Beyond that, I think that Travis won the whole game in the dogbone challenge. The fact that he willingly gave up a win to spare his dog some discomfort is exactly what they are looking for, here. Performance has never been the ultimate criteria -- relationship has been.

How was Galaxy, who was clearly reacting to the temptations with her eyes and a few movements, robotic while Andrew was just doing fantastically? I love my little man Andrew but dude, so low key and undoggie like in many aspects. I still want my main man Andrew to take it all but if Galaxy wins I am all for it b/c of editing for JD/Galaxy. Travis is great but I feel no love for Presley (sorry since I know some have them but Boxers are SO unappealing to me) and they should have been booted this last episode.

I just rewatched it and you are totally correct on that. He also said "But the goal is to keep your dogs focus on you." Also, the other two criteria were 2. Your dogs focus and 3. And your dogs overall loyalty. So basically, Theresa and Leroy failed one of the criteria, being "Use of commands" by being more aggressive with her commands, whereas Travis and Presley failed criteria 2 and 3. Presley had practically no focus on Travis, and ran halfway across the mat within the first 5 seconds, then off the mat when JD called him. So again, I agree that it was said before, but still disagree with the judging. Travis raised his voice and leaned into Presley then went back to baby talking. Then British Bitch tells Travis how impressed she was with the fact that he got him to go back into the circle. Sure Presley went back after the first five seconds, but did not go back when JD actually got him off the mat. Its pretty clearcut that British bitch and Boring Squat dude made their decision based on the owner and how they wanted the show to turn out as opposed to the other judge who was livid with the decision, and rightfully so. I still call bullshit. If you want, you can cut Presley a bit of slack for being a puppy, but in another sense, that's just making excuses for him. The theme was Loyalty, and he was simply not loyal to Travis by not listening to him, and not being able to focus. The show is "Greatest American Dog", not "Greatest American Dog unless you have a younger dog so I guess we can cut you some slack". It was pretty clear that Theresa and Leroy failed one of the criteria, and Travis and Presley failed two of the criteria. I love Travis and Presley, but there is no way they should be on the show still. Theresa and Leroy got screwed, plain and simple.

Just doesn't add up to me. Sorry. And "loyalty" is a very subjective thing... Staying in one place is not a sure sign of loyalty. You're trying to make it about staying put, and that makes sense, but it was not the required way to judge the event. It's not like in the dogbone challenge this week or last week (with the elephant) where the rules were 100% clear cut. If Laurie and Andrew, who undeniably did a fantastic job, had gotten cut this week, I'd say you had a point. There are decent arguments to cut any of the other teams.

I think that little man judge just felt like he had to say something that made him sound like he contributed to the show in some way, and he just picked something obscure that you couldn't really define. So even through he didn't know what the fuck he was talking about it, it would sound like he made a valuable point. I think the comments about the judges projecting their own issues onto the dogs and owners is dead on. The british judge needs to take that giant stick out of her ass.

Either we expect these dogs to overcome the limitations of their breed and their age and behave "perfectly" or we make allowances for their situations and celebrate the accomplishments on their own terms. You can't go one way for one dog and the other way for the other dog... The mistake is in thinking that there is any objective standard to this judging. The judges can eliminate any pair they like for any reason they like. Period. Agree or disagree, there's not much we can do about it... Besides, Theresa and Leroy have been goners since the snarl band incident over a month ago. It's pretty incredible that they lasted this long, but there was no way they were ever going to be allowed to win!

Posts: 746 (09/04/08 8:19 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	i had the pleasure of the company of a jack russell terrier for seven years. his name was sunshine. i probably could have gotten him through that "loyalty" challenge, but i would have had to scream my lungs off to keep his attention on the sit-stay. jrts have instincts hard-wired directly from their big hearts that completely bypass their brains. its not fear, its not threatening, its about capturing and maintaining attention to overcome instinct. the brit would have risen in her chair from the crap (and that stick) that would have been exiting her. i love andrew. one of my favorites. but andrew's only "need" in life is to love laurie. that's cool. that's a beautiful thing. my little sunshine had a "need" to charge, corner and contain anything lesser on his idea of the food chain (or any toy representation.) it is what he was born to do, what he was designed to do. it was his job. my job in civilized society was to break that instinctual reaction and get him to think outside of that box. to listen to me (however loud...loyalty.) border collies are born and designed to do a job too. asking that same "loyalty" task of both andrew and leroy is so apples and oranges it is ridiculous. if my sunshine had done a perfect sit-stay and not advanced out of his original position (like leroy did) i would be disappointed. that would have meant i completely destroyed the beautiful dog that he was. and galaxy is not a robot. he's not an andrew, not a sunshine. jd did exactly what was necessary to get galaxy's attention to accomplish the task as explained. a different breed, a different approach. these judges are idiots. its not one size fits all. maybe the only way to do this show is with the same breeds competing. andrews v. andrews with puppies v. puppies, etc. Last Edited By: OG sofa 09/04/08 8:23 PM. Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	I get that the judges when they said that Leroy and Galaxy weren't necessarily showing loyalty, but possibly fear. However, it's not like Presley showed any loyalty at all. He disobeyed his owner the minute Laurie threw a toy. So I'm a little confused how Presley showed loyalty but the others didn't. There wasn't any solid proof IMO to eliminate Teresa/Leroy when Travis/Presley clearly did the worst.

Making a dog sit still while a charging elephant comes at them, sitting on a stump for 20 minutes without moving, etc. I find myself feeling so bad for the dogs while watching this.

Travis cracks me up too with his speech and behavior with him. I will admit that Andrew was pretty awesome with the elephant, but I really don't care for that dog. I hated how he wouldn't even play with anyone else and just kept running for the door. Dogs like that bug me. He has no personality.
