10. Blaine (Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow/Gold/Silver/Crystal/Fire Red/Leaf Green: Cinnabar Island Gym-Fire Trainer)

Blaine kicks off the top ten as potentially the oldest gym leader in the countdown, although I suppose that title could go to Wattson or Pryce as well. In the games, I liked Blaine's gym because of the fact that you didn't have to fight his annoying trainers to get to him. You could just answer some questions, and THEN fight the trainers, if you really wanted to. How cool is it to have a Fire gym in a volcano, anyway? It was sad when Blaine had to relocate in GSC due to the eruption. Also, in the anime, Blaine was like an old hippy, which was hilarious, because he'd be annoying to meet, but he's funny to watch.


9. Blue (Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal: Viridian City Gym-Variety Trainer)

Blue is the only gym leader in Pokemon to use a variety team as opposed to focusing on one type, and I have to wonder why exactly no one else does this? I mean, you'd think that a gym leader is supposed to be tough, yet all you need to do is bring a team of Pokemon strong to that typing, and you're all set. Blue was also the eternal rival from RBY, which puts him in a special place in my heart. I wish you could name him in GSC though, so I could name him "ASS" once more.


8. Giovanni (Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow: Viridian City Gym-Ground Trainer)

Giovanni is the leader of fucking Team Rocket, and yet he still finds time amidst his busy schedule of beating up puppies and kicking orphans to run a gym in Viridian City. This is the same gym that, when you try to go to it early in the game, it's closed because Giovanni is being a dick in Saffron City. But it's a great way to end the main portion of the game, having the final battle be against the chief bad guy. Sucks that his team is Ground-typing, because Ground is horribly weak to Water, Grass, and Ice, two of which you should have a very strong Pokemon for depending on your starter.


7. Koga (Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow: Fuschia City Gym-Poison Trainer)

Janine was much lower on this list because as a Poison trainer, she pretty much threw her life away to be useless. But Koga escapes this fate because for one, he's the epitome of badass in terms of ninjas. He's refined and sophisticated, yet his whole gym is diabolical and filled with invisible walls and traps. For another, despite basically training a useless type of Pokemon, Koga was invited to become a new member of the Elite 4. I don't know, I just always thought Koga was the coolest gym leader around, and I would always have a hard time choosing between facing him first or facing Sabrina first, because I liked them both so much.


6. Clair (Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal: Blackthorn City Gym-Dragon Trainer)

I have to wonder why they were able to make a gym dedicated to Dragon-types, yet they have NEVER made a Dark-type gym. It's not like it's that hard. Hell, replace one of the Ghost gym leaders with a Dark one and no one would be able to tell the difference. Clair is the ONLY Dragon gym leader when most Dragon trainers wind up as Pokemon League champion. She is a tough girl to beat, despite her gym coming right after the ice cavern portion of the game, and she even forces you to go the extra mile to get your badge by inviting you to her secret cave. Clair is hardcore with her dragons, and she makes one of the few jokes of the Pokemon games by saying that her TM, Dragonbreathm has nothing to do with her own breath. L-O-L. Not really, but still, Clair rocks.

5. Norman (Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald: Petalburg City Gym-Normal Trainer)

Of my top 5, Norman is probably the biggest WTF, in that absolutely no one has talked about him. I suppose he might be less WTF than Flannery, because he doesn't have negative nancies talking smack about him, but whatever. Norman is the only father figure in the entire series. Other than him, your character is usually the child of a single mom who's just turnin' tricks to the local professor to get by. Norman changes that. Yes, he's from one of those annoying gyms that you reach early, yet can't do anything with until later, but who cares? When you do get a chance to challenge the gym, Norman's a great gym leader. He's probably the most challenging in the game due to the level gap between himself and Flannery. Norman does a lot of things right, but he's just too non-descript to make it higher than the top 5.


4. Jasmine (Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal: Olivine City Gym-Steel Trainer)

Jasmine, much like Candice in DP, is the closest thing GSC offers in terms of attractive gym leaders. She's the sweet, innocent, girl next door gym leader that surprises everyone by training heavy metal Pokemon. You first meet her in the lighthouse of her city, where she's tending to a sick Ampharos because she's nice like that. She makes you get medicine before she'll face you. Her Pokemon suck given that she uses Magnemites, but she's still a nice girl with a good heart, and she even shows up in DP, two generations after her last appearance. She enjoys chilling out in Sunyshore, probably because she wants Volkner's cock. And she even enters contests in the city, which shows that she's more than just your ordinary gym leader. Alas, she's the last of the GSC gym leaders, falling just before the top 3.
