I just rewatched the scene when Locke has tied off his shot leg with a seat belt from the plane and someone is approaching (Richard).
Locke removes his knife from his leather sheaf in anticipation of defending himself, and the knife makes the noise as if it's scraping steel.
No sense to add that effect.
I'm fairly sure it's happened before as well.
It's like sqealing tires on a dirt road.
