Reba and Kelly create a more perfect union

Fifty-three-year-old Reba McEntire was paying dues in bars, dance halls and honky tonks before Kelly Clarkson was potty trained. Clearly, other than near perfect pitch, the two of them have nothing in common.

Except, of course, that when they teamed up for the 2 Worlds, 2 Voices Tour stop at Cleveland State University's Wolstein Center Friday night, they delivered what is arguably the best country concert the North Coast has seen in years. And because of the diversity in Clarkson's music, it could even be called the best in any genre.

The two singers, whose onstage chemistry brings to mind Julie Andrews and Carol Burnett, are perfect foils for each other's humor. But it's the way their voices harmonize that makes them so very special as a union. They easily traded leads and backing vocals, blending two superb individual voices into one fantastic voice. It's hard to find enough superlatives to describe just how wondrously tight those harmonies were, and how much richness they added to new songs and chestnuts.

McEntire and 26-year-old Clarkson, the Season 1 "American Idol'' winner back in 2002, initially put together a 15-date tour for the summer. That grew to 40, and if music fans - and notice the lack of a distinction between country music and other genres - are fortunate, the two will reunite next season. Although truth be told, it will be tough to top this tour.

For two solid hours and 27 songs, the two held a way too empty Wolstein Center enthralled. It wasn't just the voices of the stars that blended, either. They mixed and matched bands - Clarkson's Clarkson's heavier and hipper entourage and McEntire's more traditional yee-haw group. Like the harmonies between the stars, the two bands went together better than relish and Stadium mustard on a Progressive Field dog, and the result was just as tasty.

Clarkson's youth explains why her voice, pure and perfect, is so powerful. But the greater credit goes to McEntire, whose pipes, while still better than those of 99.99999 percent of the rest of country music, do have a bit of wear on them. That's why she was smart enough to let Clarkson handle many of the vocal acrobatics. Note "many.'' Not "all.'' McEntire can still bring it like Bob Feller in his prime. And like any smart pitcher, she knows when to pick her moments.

Even more impressive is her ability to segue from her own comfort zone into Clarkson's. Her harmonies on Clarkson's hip-hoppy "Walk Away'' were worth the trip.

The two shared the stage and split time in the spotlight for the entire show, and opened with the Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams.'' If plans really do call for a reunion tour next year, well, sweet dreams are made of this.

It was like a musical version of the smorgasbord where you try a little of everything because it all looks mouthwatering. For Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson fans, Saturday night's buffet of styles and songs was irresistible; the 2 Worlds, 2 Voices tour served up two-plus hours of musical morsels from honky tonk to gritty rock, from Texas swing to TV theme songs.

Everything sounded delicious to the ears of the half-full arena crowd of 5,800. This semi-kooky notion -- to pair a country stalwart with a pop/rock hipster -- worked from "Sweet Dreams" onward. Certainly, when Clarkson wailed like a blues queen on McEntire's "Why Haven't I Heard from You," early on in the set, you knew you were in for good times.

The twosome, close buddies, sang their own songs with the other one singing background vocals, or as a duet. Sweet Miss Reba, as congenial a lady as you'll ever encounter, dug down deep for her inner bitter, thwarted woman as she sang on such Clarkson break-up classics as "Behind These Hazel Eyes," "Since U Been Gone," and especially "Never Again," a song studded with bits of broken glass in the anguished lyrics.

Then again, no one can sell a song like Reba McEntire. From weepies such as "Cathy's Clown" and -- oh my, dig for that wadded up tissue -- "The Greatest Man I Never Knew," she emoted until everyone emoted. "And Still" featured the country gal on the verge of !+%!% over the one that got away.

It's remarkable to think Reba was a country western starlet before Kelly was even born -- and when there was such a thing as country western music. She blew the saloon doors wide open on such sawdust-coated fare such as "Why Not Tonight" and "How Blue." (Clarkson's harmony on this number was spot on).

Somehow, this old-timey, dobro-honky-tonk-steel-git-tar legend didn't miss a beat when it came to chiming in on Clarkson's catalog. "Walk Away," "Breakaway" and "Because of You" had the younger artist doing her vocal acrobatics, all of which seemed even more stellar with McEntire's equally-dazzling contributions. (The latter song was sung as a duet, as it was recorded on Miss Reba's CD "Duets.")

What made this pairing so special wasn't even just their combined powerhouse voices; it was their mutual regard for each other's music.

"I love her (music)," Clarkson said admiringly. And the feeling seemed the run both ways.

When Clarkson busted out of the box with a wahoo big band number "Stuff Like That There," McEntire beamed proudly. Throughout, the blending of two genres was as delectable as Reece's Peanut Butter Cups (an astute observation made by Melissa Peterman, McEntire's co-star on their WB/CW comedy "Reba," and the opening act of the show.)

2 Worlds, 2 Voices? This tour in its Grand Rapids incarnation proved that sometimes interplanetary visitation is a great thing.

Warming up the crowd was Melissa Peterman, a comedian whose 30-minute stand-up routine ranged from mildly amusing to uproariously funny. The bubbly blonde, Barbra Jean from McEntire's sitcom, took aim at "uber-moms," karaoke and even her famous co-star.

Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson arrived in Charlottesville a day before all the trick-or-treaters came out for Halloween.

Their performance was certainly a "treat" for those of us fortunate enough to be at John Paul Jones Arena on Oct. 30.

Both Reba and Kelly were complimentary of our fair state of Virginia with all the beautiful fall foliage. Reba, 53, hails from Oklahoma while Kelly, 26, claims Texas as home.

I remember watching the 2007 "CMT Crossroads" episode that paired 2002 American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson with country music legend Reba McEntire. I was curious to see Reba singing some of Kelly's songs and vice versa. It turned out to be a great show and obviously they enjoyed working together because they created this tour called "2 Worlds, 2 Voices".

It's amazing to me to see someone as well known and talented as Reba take a newcomer like Kelly under her wing, teach her to "fly" and give her freedom to soar! Reba is obviously very secure in who she is.

She's willing to take risks and try something different by singing some of Kelly's rock songs. Reba isn't one of those artists who have to have the limelight all the time. She and Kelly take turns singing backup vocals for each other.

Kelly bounced across the sage in bare feet throughout the evening while Reba did her fair share of country music swing and line dance stepping. They honestly looked as though they were having a blast on stage which in turn made it fun for the audience.

At one point Kelly gave a rather lengthy introduction to a song then just as they got ready to sing she realized the intro was meant for a different song. She became flustered, looked at Reba and said, "Why didn't you stop me?" to which Reba nonchalantly replied, "Aww, I figured you'd get there eventually…" We all had a good laugh at Kelly's expense before they launched into the next song. Reba, ever the professional, remained unfazed and supportive. Kelly was embarrassed but sang flawlessly with a rather sheepish look on her face. It was a truly funny moment that showed their humanity and the audience loved them for it!

Reba and Kelly have been gifted with powerhouse vocals and fantastic control. It was delightful to listen to them sing individually and in duets together.

Their harmonies were wonderful and their enthusiasm contagious.

So Yelly's first supposed single is called My Life Would Suck Without You produced and written by Max Martin. It was just added onto Yelly's ASCAP page, so this song will probably be on the new album. Anything with Max Martin is a guaranteed hit.

The song was also written by Dr. Luke(SUBG) also. I just hope Kelly doesn't get sued for working with Dr. Luke, who's been known for recycling hooks.
