do you really believe that song would've been a hit with Avril singing it? Not one of her ballads have been a big hit. Her style doesn't translate well into sentimental ballads IMO. It goes totally against the "image" she's set up for herself and Breakaway was just too much of a "feel good" anthem kind of song for Avril to have seemed sincere singing it.

I mean could you seriously see Avril singing

the other reason I have doubts about how much Avril actually contributed is because this is one of the few "avril" written songs that I can actually listen to the lyrics and not cringe. Most are nonsensical messes to be honest.

I do understand what you mean about the song being very personal but I also seem to recall Ashlee Simpson had some pretty "personal" songs on her album too...but she certainly didn't contribute much to the actual writing of the song...she sat in a room with a real writer and threw out ideas of what she wanted to say and how she felt and they wrote the lyrics for her.

"I'm With You" peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100( BOY only made it to #7) and was nominated for a Grammy both as Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal. If the whole #1 in the WORLD thing is so important to Kezbos - supposedly the song went to #1 in the WORLD even though like BOY it never topped the United World Chart.
Why wouldn't Avril sound sincere singing it when it was about her life?

in other Avril news, her song "When You're Gone" outperformed BOY on the UK singles chart peaking at #3 (BOY only made it to #7).

what chart are you looking at grumpy for world stats? do you have a link?

I was looking at the media traffic site you linked to in the other Kelly thread. You should be familiar with it.

Hmmm Never Again didn't take off on radio? really? it reached #5 on the Pop 100 chart, # 8 debut on the Hot 100 and has sold over 960K downloads to date....it was on radio for approximately a month and a half before the plug was pulled on it in a very suspicious and shady manner.

Also I could see your point about NA seeming strange for the "breakaway" singer IF Kelly's other singles hadn't been in the same vein.. SUBG, BTHE, WA anyone? All thumpin pop/rock diddies that hand plenty of radio success.

I am familiar with the mediatraffic chart.. however, Robbin has pointed out to me that this chart is worthless because it's just some guy in his mom's basement with too much time on his hands! perhaps you should consult with her on that if you want to use that chart in the future

as for BOY success on the charts, which you seem to be under the impression didn't do so well here are the stats for that song

BOY went #1 on Pop on Oct. 14, 2005

BOY entered the Top 10 Pop Chart on Sept. 20, 2005 and stayed in the Top 10 Pop Chart until Feb. 16, 2006. That's 5 months in the Top 10

ALSO, BOY entered the Top 10 AC Chart on January 23, 2006 and didn't leave the Top 10 AC Chart until Nov. 1, 2006. That's over 10 months in the Top 10.

Well NA debuted on the radio chart with a massive bullet of over 1800 spins (or something insane like that) it's first week and I believe it was already in the top 30 on radio... I'm sure the downloads didn't hurt it's debut on the Hot 100 but I think the more important part is it reached #5 on Pop 100. It also went to #4 on Hot Dance Airplay. So I guess what I'm saying is that if Never Again didn't "take off" on radio then any song which doesn't do as well or better also could be deemed to have not taken off on radio, right?

As for BOY going #1 on the World Chart, I'm curious, did you go through the archives and look at every single weekly chart on that site to verify that BOY never made it to #1? If so, okay then... I'm pretty sure I recall seeing the chart where it showed BOY was #1 (for at least one week anyway) but I can't recall which week it was.

So, really there is no reason that Avril herself wouldn't have done well with "Breakaway" if she had recorded it since she sings songs with different tempos and moods. She proved she can take a ballad to the top of the charts and also get grammy nominated for it.

which ballad did she take to the top of the charts again? According to Billboard.com none of Avril's ballads made it to #1 on ANY chart. and if we did a side by side look at radio success between Kelly and Avril, in the U.S. at least, Kelly is MUCH more successful on radio. Now internationaly, Avril is the bigger star, no question. But we only discuss U.S. success on this board so that's what I'm limiting myself to. I personally enjoy Avril's ballads MORE than her faux punk stuff, usually because the lyrics are much deeper and actually make some kind of sense but I still don't believe she would've been able to pull of Breakaway, which is I believe what she herself said... that it didn't fit her "image" which is why she never recorded it.
