when would be a good time to replace a shower curtain liner? |

It gets icky so easily, but vinyl, PVC and PVE aren't environmentally friendly. Some suggested putting it in the washer, although I haven't tried this.

wash it in bleach and detergent -- you'll be okay for another 3-6 months, depending upon the humidity.

i was going to say the same. just wash it. i have one of them cloth types.

The more 'cloth types' are more expensive but don't get gross as fast. Toss that nasty plastic one away and spend the bucks to buy a nicer one.
It'll wash better too - you won't be stuck trying to dry what is basically a sheet of thick plastic.

I heard the hemp curtain liner gets moldy easily? if that isn't true, then I will get one. PVC supposedly emits this toxic odor.

just douse it in gasoline and light it on fire...that way it won't end up in a landfill

I've heard that if you are going to try to wash it in your washer, you should add some towels to the load because the vinyl will stick to itself if there
isn't anything else to keep it apart. Also, the towels will create a slight abrasive effect to help remove soap scum. Personally, my one attempt at washing
one in the washer was unsuccessful. I ended up with strips of vinyl.

Washing them doesn't really work, and if you're going to go to all the trouble to take it down and put it up, it's a lot nicer to just put up a
clean one.
I buy the ones at Bed, Bath and Beyond that claim they don't mold, but they do. Just not as quickly. |

because the vinyl/PVC/PVE ones are not environmentally friendly, I hesitate to replace them quickly. hence the thread.

So spray some 409 or some other cleaner and use a little elbow grease to scrub off the mildew.

I add Oxy powder to the wash water to help out the process, but regular detergent and a splash of bleach will do the trick to. It will be good as new... promise....and it wouldn't hurt to try it out either, wouldn't it? |

every time I've tried that, it's ended up shredding the shower curtain or liner

I buy a new one every eight to twelve weeks, just because it is the PROPER thing to do. Only disgusting, pig-like creatures keep shower curtain liners for
longer than that.
But if you are financially strapped, or just ridiculously lazy, then go ahead and wash it. GENTLE CYCLE, and yes... add the towels to the load. Tumble dry on LOW HEAT with the towels. Remove after a few moments -- you just want to get the wrinkles out. You can also keep a small spray bottle filled with 50-50 solution of bleach and water in the shower. Lightly spray the liner either before you get in or while you are in there. Rinse after a few minutes. If you are one of those environmental pussies (and I suspect that you are), you may try vinegar instead, but it's not going to work. If all else fails, use a butter knife to gently scrape away the grey-black and pink gelatinous mold build-up. If properly cultivated in a petri dish, you can make a potent antibiotic. |

If the shower curtain might be replace a shower door, I would like it.

yeah, when I have $30,000 to remodel my bathroom, I'll install glass doors

Do you have a fan? They don't get as nasty if you can get some air circulating. And also, each time you get out of the shower, shake it off. And if you
have hard water, get a filter for your showerhead (dont' forget to change IT) and the pinkish stuff will go away.

I use the hot water setting on the gentle cycle for my shower curtain liners with bleach and laundry detergent. I stop the machine before it goes into a spin
cycle and pull out the shower curtain and hang it up immediately. I get several years out of my cheap shower curtain liners from Kmart.

Ask Beep to pick you up a new one at the Dollar store.

Do what Mom said AND what TC said.
You can wash them on gentle and remove before the spin. To increase the amount of time before you have to wash them, shake them off after each shower. Because of a tub leveling issue we squeegee our shower after every use. I think that has helped too .. maybe just removing some of the water from the area cuts down on the humidity enough to help. |
