Apparently not. I'm sure Eva has outsold Brian.Brain has been by far the lowest selling Idol. Theresa Suckyrka's first album sold way more! Eva has done surprisingly well, better than Melissa. Here's a nice little breakdown: First Album Jacob 172,000 Kalan 160,000 Ryan 90,000 Rex 80,000 Eva 70,000 Melissa 60,000 Theresa 60,000 Brian 27,000 Second Album Jacob 81,000 Kalan 21,000 Rex 20,000 Theresa 11,000 Ryan 2,500 |

50,000 albums shipped is Gold and 100,000 is platinum. I would classify that as good.

Now, the question that Miraclemax posted is highly valid...to which the answer is 99.9% probably not. David Cook is a god. True. It will never happen. But this question has the most validity with regards to CI. But will there ever be a runner up as good as Theresa? It will be great to get a half decent runner up for a change and not have the other person win by default. But as long as NFLD and NS and fangirls exist it
will never happen.

Rex outsold Melissa?I actually don't know where QN got the numbers for the sales because I know it's been debated a lot as to who sold more between Rex and Melissa. I think the label shipped Platinum for him, and only shipped Gold for Mel but I've read things that said they sold around the same amount, and both sold closer to Gold and Rex didn't sell even near as much as Platinum. That said I don't know, perhaps QN could tell us where she got her #s. That said I'd believe Rex outsold Melissa. She's more talented but he had NL on his side and his more rockish stuff was probably more popular than her more pop stuff. Although personally her singles were much better than "Run." |

Aside from Jacob, those 2nd album sales figures are really depressing. It saddens me that Theresa only sold 11,000.
CI desperately needs a successful winner this season.

It saddens me that Theresa only sold 11,000.It's a shame because the 2nd album is all originals and so enjoyable. I can't decide if the 2nd album sold so much less than the first one because the first one didn't give enough of a taste of who she is and with all the covers didn't get people hooked on her or because people enjoyed the covers and weren't interested in her original music. |

I guess my point was that many people expected Kalan and Eva to do great things and become mega-stars while Ryan and Melissa would quietly fade away but Ryan
and Melissa are still out there singing regularly and Kalan and Eva aren't doing a whole lot. Some of this has to do with SBMG's influence but I would
say that overall (imho of course), partly based on Idol and partly based on what I've seen of them afterwards, Ryan and Melissa are better performers and
more appealing than Kalan and Eva. Kalan and Eva may be superior technical singers and are no doubt talented but I don't think they are nearly as good as
most people make them out to be. I find it interesting that Melissa may be the winner who has been out of the spotlight the least since their win, not that
it's hard but still...
Those sales figures don't take into account albums sold at concerts, right? If not then the totals should be a little higher for most of them especially Jacob, Ryan and Rex who have done the most touring. Jacob sold a small number of CDs in the States too. |

You have to be fair though. I think Kalan would have done a lot better if it wasn't for his personal life and family issues becoming more important than
his career. If he had been able to keep momentum his 2nd album probably would have done better.
As for Eva I'm not sure what she's doing musically right now but I'm sure she's not having any trouble paying the bills. The girl is drop dead gorgeous and carved out a pretty decent modeling career for herself to fall back on. Last time I check none of the other Idols faces were selling Sony Viao laptops or shoes. That said I think it's a shame that they didn't get to become bigger in the music industry but at least 4 of the 5 will probably be able to make a living either doing music related stuff or through modeling. Honestly I have no hope for Brian, Kalan's 3rd album will probably sell more than Brian's 2nd (as if he'll even get to record one). Again though most of this is Sony BMG's fault, they fucking blow. |

I realized I haven't blogged in a while, so I thought I'd update you guys on what I'm doing lately, hehe. I'm still working on the new album, which should be released this upcoming summer! August most probably |

If Sony BMG was smart (which they aren't) they'd have Eva either do an album with 3 or 4 French tracks on it, or do two albums one being an all French
language album. I'd personally buy a French language album from her or an album in any other language but I think she could do really well in QC with a
French album. They love their music stars in Quebec and they've got some real talent. Ariane Moffatt <3, discovered her thanks to Eva. I've always
enjoyed music in other languages (little known SHC fact, I have a whole bunch of songs on my iPod by a Dutch rock band) so I checked out her music right after
Eva covered one of her songs in French in concert.

Wiki actually has Brian's sales at 50,000. Sure that 2 isn't a 5, Queen?
I have yet to even hear of any of the winners or contestants at all, outside of CI. Then again, I live in the U.S., but you hear of people like Guy Sebestian here on occasion. |

That's pathetic. It's the equivalent of an AI winner selling 270,000 copies. Not even Taylor came close to flopping that badly.
I feel bad for him, actually. They need to stop filling these contestants' heads with nonsense about them becoming famous after the show. It gets their hopes up too much. Just tell it like it is -- you'll get to be on TV for a few months, put out an album, if you're really lucky you might get to record a second album. Maybe do some modeling work. But that's about it. Just let them enjoy the CI experience for what it is. It's not American Idol, and it never will be.

Even most AI winners flop.
The only mega-successful winners from any edition of the show have been Will Young (blecch), Kelly (double blecch), Carrie (triple blecch), and Kurt Nilsen. |

The thing is, with Brian, he did not have the promotion that the others had. It was basically just name recognition from his c.d. cover when people saw it in
stores. His music video came out after the X-Mas rush and when album sales are at their lowest. They spent nothing promoting it and it will flop. I'm
not saying that he would be Platinum bound if he was promoted but he certainly would have reached 50,000 in sales at least. He pulled of 27,000 without any
help.
The only real stars to come out of Idol are Jacob and Eva. 2 people in 5 years. That's sad. Kalan flopped bigtime with his second album, 21,000? for someone who sold 160,000 before that's a big blow. that's like the equivalent in U.S. sales of going from 1.6 million sold to just 210,000. BTW, his album is pretty good and I hate him. I expected at least 50,000 sold and shipped. |

The reason why Brian failed is because of two reasons. One is Idol is wearing thin on people. Nobody actually believes someone is gonna become a big star,
except Greg. Entering its fifth season with every winner falling off the face of the earth, everyone knew nobody would care about mediocre Brian Melo. The
second reason why Brian has flopped is because he is not very good. He won because he was the lesser of two evils, a trend here on Canadian Idol. Squeaking by
each week indicates that he did not have a big fanbase to begin with, so why would that translate into record sales? All of the other winners had at least
something going for them. Ryan was the first winner, so there the initial buzz. Kalan was spectacular in every sense, so that meant an enormous, cult like, and
obsessive fanbase. Melissa was the first female winner, and Rex and Eva had strong regional support, which propelled their record sales. I don't believe
that even if the fiends at SBMG would have promoted his album, success would have been much greater. Certainly didn't do Kalan any good.
The biggest reason Kalan flopped was because of his mom's sickness. Had that not happened and he released his album two years earlier, I have no doubts it would have sold well. Honestly, I think his two albums have been painfully bad. Oh well. |
