So the people who work minimum age jobs their entire lives with no opportunity to save any money because they have to actually live on what they earn are just expected to curl up and die when they can no longer work? If you are going into politics, you need to learn French but otherwise, it's not needed outside Quebec. I don't think it's even mandatory in school although I can't remember. I took French right up until grade 12 because I love the language and it's an easy A. I also took Italian because of my heritage. I can still understand a little of them both but mostly, I've lost the ability to communicate in either language because everyone around me speaks English. It's sad, really. I should take it up again. Learning another language in America isn't necessary but it doesn't hurt either. Especially Spanish since you guys have a large portion of the population who are Latino.

Anyone know about some of the other states and what they require? Personally, I don't have a problem with people learning a second or third language, it's the people who REFUSE/WON'T learn English, even when they're living here that piss me off. I don't expect people who are coming here for a visit or vacation to know english and I'm sure most would not expect Americans to know the language of the place that they were going to visit for a week or two. Of course, if I was going to live in another country, then I would make it a priority to learn the language of that country.

Much of the math and science taught in schools isn't practical. What is more likely today -- that you might have to speak Spanish in a situation or figuring out the cosecant of an angle You can demand that everybody speak the same language all you want; it won't prepare you for the real world. Why anybody would argue against any sort of basic education is beyond me. sigh There's a reason they call these the liberal arts, I guess, and not the conservative arts. Personally, I don't have a problem with people learning a second or third language, it's the people who REFUSE/WON'T learn English, even when they're living here that piss me off. I understand why crabby old Chinese ladies refuse to do so. It's unacceptable for everybody else. Why wouldn't you learn it alongside your native language, for practical reasons?
