Is Mark Burnett deliberatly trying to ruin Survivor? |
Lead | |
|
For me, the simplist answer is usually the correct one, or at least an indicator in the right direction. One would think that the reason Survivor has gone
ddownill is ddue to neglect, because Burnett is a multimillionaire several times over. However, he still takes the time to prodduce crap game shows like
"Are you smarter then a 5th grader" and "my dad is better then your dad"(i ddiddn't includde amn$ia since I'm somewhat fond of it).
I don't get it, at best these ame shows get goodd ratings but no long term respect or love because they are novelties which wear out quickly. Sometimes I
feel like hes actually trying to get Survivor cancelled. You could argue that that stronger emphasis on challanges, stratagy and mitagating any of the winners
"unlikeable" behavoir is a means to try to appeal to a broader auddience, but I ddisagree. Casual viewers of the show who I've talked to tend to
be passive, they'll swallow anything. So why feed them crap when you could serve them crystal?

Probst and Burnett are both under the misguided impression that everyone in America has a stiffy (like they do) for older males who have a somewhat interesting
personality and do rather well on the show... thereby, the intent is to edit retards like Earl, Yul, and Aras who bear absolutely no resemblance to these
*stars*, as stable men-in-charge dominating types... and it fails miserably.
The worst part of Fiji was watching all the "Previously, on Survivor" recaps the beginning highlight "Earl's dominance in the challenges" or "Earl's powerful alliance chose to..." |

Actually,Aras was given a rather humane edit. They showed both his immaturity and is self awreness, and hardly anyone besides myself thinks hes a worthy winner

I personally don't think that Burnett even watches Survivor. I doubt he could even name most of the players anymore. And I bet it has been that way since about Amazon or Pearl Islands. |

Pearl Islands was the first season where he didn't spendd the whole game on location, so you might be correct

cost him the game... but what's annoying is that the editors couldn't make that Aras's story... instead, they made Aras out as a flake who just
happened to be at the right place at the right time.

For sure. They try to edit it in a way thats most appealing to a broad audience, because most casual viewers are stupid and still think the show is about surviving in the wilderness exclusivly, or as it is now, winning challanges |

People here seem to forget, that people like us are in the vast minority of the audience watching this show.
The general public loves their dominant males, especially when they are older in age, so MB & Co. edit them as such. There's a reason why Rupert, Tom, Terry, Colby, & Stephenie are some of the most popular Survivor castaways. |

Im sick of being told who to likeThen watch American Idol, at least you have the pretense of being able to pick the winner, unless of course they actually want you to pick who they want to win, and therefore will make sure to praise them up the ass regardless of how they do. |

What bugs me is the 3 full minutes at the start of each episode that recaps what happened last time. Then probably 70% of the rest of the show is either
challenges or tribal council. They've tried to hype up the competition and drama so much that it actually dilutes it. Why bother showing the challenge
and going through this elaborate tribal council question and answer fest, only to vote out someone who has gotten a grand total of 13 seconds of airtime? The
fun part of the show is getting a good look at all contestants, and knowing a bit about their personality and strategy, and then having someone get voted out
without it being obvious all episode who is going home.
I imagine watching this show without reading spoiler information would make it far more entertaining for me. |

I think part of the problem is just gimmickry. At this stage MB feels he needs big loud gimmicks to keep the audience coming back--the problem being that if
you want to do, say, tribes divided by race, you end up basically having to cast way over 16 people, most of whom will be recruits just because of how
demographics work, which in turn forces more manipulative editing. China was the exception to this because the setting itself was the gimmick, so he was free
to go back to a more traditional format, which allowed for more satisfying editing (imo).

Part of me feels that way sometimes! The absolutely horrific casting, particularly with people like Kathy and Chet who while billed as "super fans"
were clearly not equipped to ever be out there in the first place, the absurd length of time spent on challenges which are all so similar in fashion (run out
to the water, get puzzle pieces, build puzzle), treating people like Natalie and Alexis as if they don't exist, and so on. These are supposed to bring in
viewers!?! It doesn't make sense though that they'd fix everything for one season (China) then go right back to the crapper again the next. I can only
hope that S17 will return to the manner in which China was handled.

Survivor China was a great return to form but unfortunately CBS wanted another damn All Stars season. Burnett didn't want to do another All Stars so they
came up with Fans vs. Favorites and went back to an expanded cast so that they could have a lot of returning players. I'm hopeful that season 17, with the
supposed location in Gabon, Africa will be more like China with a cast of 16.
The Fans vs. Favorites concept is not working because all of the Favorites lasted at least 30 days on their first time while Chet and Kathy would not make the merger on any regular season. Joe and MikeyB were both examples of strong but cocky male contestants who have often booted pre-merge.

Part of the problem is that very few applications from regular people are actually looked at anymore and they've resorted to casting Mactors. These are
people who are supposed to look good in front of the camera. They might pass all the application data and the mental exams and stuff but let's be
honest....if the casting director has a choice between someone who's butt-ugly and the swimsuit model with the big plastic boobs who thinks Survivor is her
springboard to a Playboy centerfold and all other things are equal, you know who they're going to cast.

melicatsmom wrote: Exactly. Recruits are 100% ok as long as they make sure there is say 1 or 2 people who may try to hit it big after the show. People like Colleen, Heidik, and JFP were all recruited and were all great cast members. They just need to understand that in the real world, maybe 2% of the people are trying to hit it big in Hollywood or New York while everyone else is just an average person, but these average people are all entertaining in their own ways as long as they are open to showing it and not being biased. |

I'm going to put here what I've put everywhere else. I don't have a problem with the cast being like....a quarter mactors (so, say, 4 or 5) if they
fit a certain specific character type that they're looking for in a specific season. However, I still have a firm belief that the majority of people on the
show should be those that actually apply for it on their own.

I think people seem to forget that this show is in its eighth year and next year it is its ninth year. Unfortunately most television shows do not tend to age
well...
However this year I think has probably been the best year since PI/All Stars. |

ptcruisn--I do agree they're on an upswing over editions like Vanuatu and potentially Fiji as well. But my concern is now they seem to be more concerned
with putting people on who are simply going to look good for the camera and who probably have not the faintest idea of what's actually invovled with
Survivor than they are in getting players who are willing to play and tough out the hard situations. That's why I think we're seeing so many more cast
members drop out simply because they don't want to do it anymore instead of either players who will suck it up and deal with it or players who play so hard
and so love the game they want to stay even if it could kill them.
Granted after nine seasons they may be scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as applicants are concerned--many of the 'fans' on the current edition have applied for Survivor multiple times and keep getting rejected. But surely there's more than one or two new applications from somone or a group of first-timers, surely. |

Yeah,I mean, at the very least there's gotta be people who didn't apply earlier simply because they weren't old enough.
