The weird thing about this Season is the minute they leave the show I forget about them completely. I can barely remember anyone voted off so far.I agree completely with this. I can picture every single person who has made it to the voting part of the show (even the semifinalists) from the past 6 seasons and even what they sang. I've already forgotten this year's. I actually think last year was better. This year may have better singers, but there is pratically ZERO entertainment value as others have said. And I think the theme weeks this year have really killed the show. It was a horrible, horrible idea having themes in the semifinals, and then having the same theme twice in a row in the finals? What?! This week should have been country instead of just Dolly songs. They've screwed up the theme weeks IMO. |

I hated last year but it may have been more entertaining. Melinda, Lakisha and Jordin were actually better than all the women this year (exception Carly
maybe). At least Timberfake and Beatbox were fun to mock. Sligh was awful but I still remember him. Ramielle is already a distant blur.

No way is Jordin more talented than Syesha.
Syesha might be way too loud, but at least she doesn't bleat like a goat or sing crappy Disney-fied teen pop music. Us Kids Know wrote: Fixed.

I think that overall they are the most talented group. I don't think that any of them (now that Amanda is gone) is
horrible. I think they all sing quite well. But few of them have had breakout performances like we have seen in the past. Because they are all
"good" none of them stand out as being the best (though for me David Cook is way ahead of the rest).

I think you've hit it exactly. There are a lot of good singers in the group, but almost no great ones and almost no blow-away performances so far. In
previous seasons even questionable singers sometime hit a home run, like Scott's On Broadway and Constantine's Bohemian Rhapsody. This season
there's been almost no jaw droppingly good (or for that matter, bad) performances. Things like Brooke's Let It Be SEEM LIKE they'll be special
moments a la Katherine's Over The Rainbow, but aren't really. They're just good. I think Carly could do it, but she needs to dress less severely
and make contact with the audience to pull it off. She's a really good singer but so far she's not a good performer.

The semifinals themes and the two Beatles weeks were a stupid idea.
I liked the Dolly week. Her catalogue was broad enough for everyone to have a chance, and most of them did well. This was one of the very few Idol weeks where no one had a bad performance. One thing I like more this season is even if it's manufactured as hell, the show feels more like Idol again. Group songs, bringing back former contestants, and much less time spent fawning over the has been of the week. The show has let up on telling us how cool it is and how tied to the industry it is and has gone back to letting us care more about the people onstage. I think any season suddenly becomes better when the next season comes along. As much as I liked some contestants in AI5, many of the theme nights were a disaster. AI6 was often a mix of boring and bad, the kind of manufactured bad (like "Bathwater"), and the genuine bad (like most of Jordin's later performances) were passed off as brilliance. While bad can be more entertaining than boring, I still have no desire to watch most of those seasons again. Sometimes I just watch a few of the performances on Youtube. I haven't seen a big breakout performance this season, but there are a lot of small performances I've enjoyed, so maybe that evens out to not having the big moment in a season of dross. Since the judges and the producers are all so apathetic now, the big moments may be gone forever. But if that means less "You'll Never Walk Alone" or "Over the Rainbow", maybe that's not the worst thing in the world.

Sorry, but I don't get all of the Season 5 love. The only star from that season is Chris Daughtry, and he bugged the hell out of me. Katharine McPhee had
one good song, but she screeched her way through the rest of them.
There's still seven more weeks of performances to critique this season, since we're only down to the Top 8. I still remember Season 2 when Clay Aiken didn't have a breakthrough performance until the Top 5. It will be interesting to see who makes it to the Top 5 this season, when they get to sing two songs each night. |

I think by Top 5 night, they'll all be in trouble. Nobody has any range so they'll be doing their one trick act twice. That should kill the careers
of everyone but the top two who Clive is forced to sign. Although I think Castro's recording career is DOA already.

Season five had plenty of talent, but the themes and some of the places the performers were in at the time (in terms of what they could do -- like Kellie)
seriously dragged the season down. It was a very uneven and often boring string of performance nights (Queen, Stevie Wonder, Hits of the 00's, etc.)
I think this season actually has more people than most seasons who can do a variety of songs. But on Idol, anyone who does a variety of music is slammed, so they try to stay in as narrow a box as possible. |

To put Season Five's depth in perspective, here's a list of how many people from each season have a CD that sold at least 250,000 copies: Season One:
1. Season Two: 3 or 4 (I'm not sure about KLo). Season Three: 1. Season Four: 2. Season Five: 6. Season Six: 2 (so far). Admittedly, Season Two is still
the only one with TWO million sellers, and Kelly and Carrie's sales have been by far the best.

The low man in the top seller's group for Season 5 was Bucky and he's sold 335K so far. Assuming that Kristy and Syesha are fodder and the top 6 are what's left, I sincerely doubt that everyone left can sell each sell 300K or better. They'll all vanish into the ether unless they win or place IMO. And it's not about talent, it's about uniqueness, connection with the audience, charisma, something that most of the contestants this season lack.

It's also about getting a good deal in the first place. Many of us here liked Bucky and voted for him, but back in that season, he was treated with total
contempt by the show and by many in the press (I remember that brilliant EW article which told us all about how inferior he was to the man who won that
season's "Nashville Star"). Bucky was smart enough to find good representation and a good label after that season, and he's gone on to earn
his success. There's no reason why some of the people this season can't do the same thing. What happened during the course of the season doesn't
translate to what happens after the show. If it did, then Ace, Lisa, and Paris (who were all hyped endlessly during the season) would have had success.
Bucky's success has come from him more than the very uneven season he was a part of.
The way the industry has slumped recently, with even Carrie taking a hit compared to her first album sales, I don't see how any current or future season, even a season with the best talent ever, would have a lot of contestants who will go on to be good sellers. At the most they will have solid careers and a chance to make a living and do what they want creatively. |

It was pretty annoying, although many others went along with the show. Bucky used the show and had the last laugh, which is the best type of post-AI success. I don't mean to make it sound like Idol had nothing to do with his success, or Elliott's success, but I think both of them just took the launching pad they were given and everything else is from their own efforts, not from their being on the show. |

Season 7 is good in bringing in the instruments and that should be continued for future seasons. Obviously, they've addressed the knowing the
contestants aspect but again it all comes down to casting. Seasons 4 and 5 were successful because you had polarizing, likeable, charismatic, and occasionally
talented contestants.

Part of the problem is AI is covering the same types of singers over and over. Kyle was nothing more than a knockoff of Kevin Covais. Danny was basically
Brenna Gethers, and his schtick was already more than played out after only three weeks, I can't imagine how it would have fared in the finals. Drew seemed
like a nice guy but would have just been the generic male country singer. Josiah would have been a new version of JPL, with Brooke's instability as a
bonus.
I think they were right to go for talent over gimmicks, but the theme nights and the idiocy of the judges take a big toll, as they do every season. I think the biggest problem is that the show obviously wants a certain type of winner and they work hard to guide the audience in that direction. They probably think they have to be aggressive in pushing who they want, because they don't want a repeat of Taylor, but they fail to see one of the reasons Taylor won is precisely because they were so obnoxiously OTT with who they wanted as a winner in that season. If they would back off and just let people compete and let the public decide, then the show would improve. Instead we are in yet another season of questionable eliminations, people being broken down emotionally, and the judges talking out of their asses. |

Mediocre "talented" contestants like Aloha Kitty, Jason Castro, and Chekezie provide little entertainment and should never be cast in the 1st place. I say cast 4-6 geniunely talented singers with the rest being entertaining. |
