It takes a lot more than talent to have success. I think Simon likes David Archuleta but I don't think he shits on all the others because of Archuleta. I think he genuinely wants to help David Cook -- his comments to David tonight were what he needed to hear. I thought his criticism of Brooke was silly, but I also think he would have looked foolish if he'd praised her, and he may have realized that. I also suspect he doesn't like Beatles songs and took his pissy attitude out on the contestants. He does seem to have some issues with Carly, which I put on the whole controversy over her record deal. I see him as believing David Archuleta is the most marketable. There was a boy in the first season of Pop Idol, Gareth Gates, who was similar to David. Simon hated Will Young and worked with Gareth (who was runner up) after the show. He may see this as another chance to get the type of star he wants. My guess is he wants David to win but the show would rather see David Cook win.

I don't even think he likes it very much; that's what pisses me off. Randy is a useless critic most of the time, but at least the guy is a musician and a fan. The critique of Blackbird was absurd; apparently can't grasp abstract lyrics.

I feel like before there was always room for other talents who weren't necessarily the favourites to get praise if they did a really good job, no matter how much it killed Simon. Now I feel like he'll say absolutely anything to trash anyone if it's what TPTB want. They want people to think Archuleta is the second coming (which unfortunately a lot of people already do for God only knows what reason) and so Simon reinforces that opinion by calling him amazing and trashing anyone else he possibly can for any number of made up reasons. The reasons don't even make sense anymore. "THAT WAS WET" Wtf does that even mean? The sad thing is I'm not sure the average viewer is smart enough to pick up on what he does. I think they really believe he knows what he's talking about and his opinion weighs heavily when they vote. Which is sad. I'd like to see a night with no judges, like Australian Idol 5 did on Top 2 performance night. Top 2 had been chosen and at that point it was in the public's hands to choose their winner and they were allowed to do so without the judges playing favourites on TV or saying who would/should win.

Will Young continues to be a success, Gareth Gates, not so much. I love boy of the guys but Simon's hatred of Will was stupid.

Problem is, I don't think the other "chosen ones" ( Carly, Michael, and yes, Syesha ) are quite living up to earlier expectations. A couple of people were clearly fodder ( Brooke and Cook ) but have picked up a little steam and a following. They can't do anything with Brooke and they already have a Cook type artist setting the charts on fire for them; what the Hell are they gonna do with another Daughtry? I believe they looked at Carly and Michael as potential Pop superstars, that would hit on multiple continents. I think they originally thought Syesha could be more marketable than the mess that has become Fantasia (and it's about on schedule for her to get released, isn't it?) This season is a mess, because they stacked the deck and it backfired in a big way.

Truer words have never been spoken. I don't think Simon knows anything about music. All he sees is dollar signs. The only word Randy knows is pitchy. Pauler's too off her meds to say anything that makes any sense. Any sadly she's said the most things that I agree with this year (when I can actually understand her). I see him as believing David Archuleta is the most marketable. I don't understand what's so marketable about him in the first place. Sure he checks all the boxes (sings in tune, is cute, likable), but music not about fitting into some formula. There is nothing about him that is unique. That's why when he wins he's going to flop faster than you can say Ruben Studdard. And that's exactly what TPTB deserve.

I agree that Simon's attempts at manipulating the audience are often ridiculous, but even more ridiculous are the fantards who whine about pimpage in a case like this.

He's just a young guy who can sing well and there are lots of those out there and especially lots of them in singing/talent competitions. I don't see him being a multi-million album seller like Kelly or Carrie and I don't see why they want him to win. He's not musically relevant like someone like Brooke or David C who sing a style that is popular and will sell records and to top it all off he's not even better than many of the others in the competition.

I don't know if they want him to win. The overhype so early on is not a good way to make a winner. I think they may hope they can make a quick buck off of him or get him into a Disney market, but I think they have their winner eye on David Cook or Ramiele (if Ramiele were better).

But maybe that's what they want so they can fit him into their mold. Agreed. Kristy at least wants to do Country and off the show she might be able to have some small success with a Country album. I also agree that having no musical identity is harder for a male to pull off than a female. I mean at least with girls if they have a big voice they can put out some sort of music and people might buy it for the singing. With a guy that's rare, you have to at least have some sort of genre you fit into, you can't just be a singer. Even great male voices like Josh Groban have a type of music that they do. I don't know what they could even mold him into. Disney tween is the only place I see him fitting and the main fan group I could see him appealing to but even then he doesn't even do like Jonas Brothers type of pop-rock music.

Marketability is based on supply and demand. When Jive signed the Backstreet Boys, every label and their mother went scouting for a potential boyband cash cow. When Jive had success with Britney, every label went searching for its own blonde jail bait vixen. Most acts in music history were sought out by some A & R looking to one-up or just stay on par with the competition. Archuleta is relevant in today's teen music climate and the merchandising will be ridiculous. But it's always going to be a strike while the iron is hot mentality, because trends are pretty difficult to predict, and the demand might be totally different a month from now.
