The three-year, $30 million contract signed by Raul Ibanez and the Phillies, should put a ceiling on contracts for Adam Dunn, Bobby Abreu, Milton Bradley and Pat Burrell, among other outfielders, explains Mark Topkin in the St. Petersburg Times.

After acquiring two closers and trading away Heilman, the Mets ship Schoeneweis out of town. This is too good to be true.

lol my favorite part about this is the interpreter totally fucking up (or something like that) cause park thinks hes gonna be a starter:
"I was a little worried about the Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Phillies, which is hitter-friendly, but as they considered me as a starter, I signed with Philadelphia," he said. uh no, we probably said you could compete with like 4 other people to be our 5th starter also the phils resigned moyer for 2 years yayayayay |

Good. That means the Phils are out of the Lowe sweepstakes. I read Pettitte has been offered 3/36 from an unnamed team. That better not be the Mets. |

So i'm reading my Sunday sports page yesterday and as i'm about to bite into my Italian hoagie (oil, hot peppers, no onions) out of the corner of my
eye i see K-Rod proclaiming the Mets are the team to beat.
One more time How original... Does this buffoon even understand what's coming out of his clueless mouth? Christ thanker should have stayed as far away from the Phillies as possible. He'll now be included in the laughable Met lore that Philadelphia continues to tag them with. |

why do you think the phils are out of the lowe sweepstakes? moyer was always considered to be a part of our plans for next year and youre nuts if you think
chan ho park is actually going to be our fifth starter

LOL @ Twistedzman no longer trying to hide the fact he fears any further improvements to the already mighty Phillies. I guess after getting pummeled for two
straight years you get a little twitchy.

The petite offer must be from either the red sox or the dodgers

Is StarRider still here? I figured he would've taken a one way flight to Siberia by now.
And the reason why I'm happy the Phillies are probably out of the Lowe sweepstakes is cause it increases the chances of the Mets signing him. Nice try dude. moyer was always considered to be a part of our plans for next year and youre nuts if you think chan ho park is actually going to be our fifth starter hamels, myers, moyer, blanton with happ or kendrick as the 5th starter. |

smokeitgood wrote: Yes, official now. Hamels, Wifebeater, Blanton and Moyer locked up. I don't think they have the $ for Lowe, but if the market contracts, maybe they'll go after a second tier pitcher, which I think is doubtful. They already have 4-5 pitchers to compete for the 5th spot. |

Cubs add speed, ink Gathright to deal By Carrie Muskat / MLB.com CHICAGO -- The Cubs picked up some speed on Tuesday when they signed outfielder Joey Gathright to a one-year contract for $800,000. Gathright will be competing for a spot on the Cubs' bench. He was non-tendered by the Kansas City Royals on Friday after batting .254 in 105 games this past season with no homers and 22 RBIs. The left-handed-hitting outfielder was 4-for-14 as a pinch-hitter (.286). Cubs manager Lou Piniella knows Gathright well. The speedy outfielder played for Piniella in Tampa Bay and stole 20 bases in 2005. He swiped 22 total in 2006 with the Rays and Royals, but this season was bothered by a bone bruise in his right shoulder. The Cubs have been looking for both speed and some help off the bench as they tweak the roster for '09. Gathright has 78 stolen bases in 105 attempts in his career, good for a 74 percent success rate. He has primarily seen action in center field. |

Felix Pie serves the exact same purpose plus has the potential to be a much more complete player. Gathright has already reached his pinnacle, and it's mediocre at best. Meanwhile, Felix will probably get shafted back to Iowa once again simply becasue the Cubs organization has no idea how to bring up a prospect. If they dont become an instant all star, they're deemed unworthy an sent down to Iowa or forced to rot away on the bench. |

According to Impacto Deportivo, the Yankees are close to signing Manny Ramirez to a three-year, $75 million contract, and could announce a deal either today or tomorrow. However, Yankees GM Brian Cashman later told MLB.com that the above report is 'not true.' Lastly, the Boston Globe expects to eventually see rumors involving the Red Sox and D'Backs, and a deal that could send OF Eric Byrnes and C Miguel Montero to Boston. |

If the Yankees give Manny anything more than a two year deal they are crazy. But I can almost guarantee that his first year numbers with the Yanks will rival
those of his career best. Two year deal would be great.
