The Elimination Numbers
thru August 17 The elimination number of a team is the minimum number of losses by that team, and/or wins by the first-place team, needed to eliminate that team from the division or wild-card. Until their elimination number reaches zero, it is still mathematically possible for a team to win, or tie for, the division or wild-card. The elimination number of the second-place team in a race is the same as the "magic number" of the first-place team. Teams in danger of being eliminated this week have their elimination numbers denoted in red. Team - (division) / (wild-card) Los Angeles Angels - ALW division leader, #1 seed, magic number 24 Chicago Cubs - NLC division leader, #1 seed, magic number 33 Tampa Bay Rays - ALE division leader, #2 seed, magic number 35 Boston Red Sox - 35 / AL wild-card leader, magic number 39 Chicago White Sox - ALC division leader, #3 seed, magic number 40 / 39 Minnesota Twins - ALC division leader, #3 seed, magic number 40 / 39 Milwaukee Brewers - 33 / NL wild-card leader, magic number 35 St. Louis Cardinals - 30 / 35 New York Mets - NLE division leader, #2 seed, magic number 37 Philadelphia Phillies - 37 / 34 New York Yankees - 30 / 34 Toronto Blue Jays - 28 / 32 Arizona Diamondbacks - NLW division leader, #3 seed, magic number 39 / 35 Los Angeles Dodgers - NLW division leader, #3 seed, magic number 39 / 35 Florida Marlins - 34 / 31 Houston Astros - 26 / 31 Texas Rangers - 24 / 29 Baltimore Orioles - 25 / 29 Detroit Tigers - 29 / 28 Cleveland Indians - 26 / 25 Oakland Athletics - 20 / 25 Colorado Rockies - 30 / 23 Atlanta Braves - 27 / 24 Pittsburgh Pirates - 18 / 23 Kansas City Royals - 24 / 23 Cincinnati Reds - 17 / 22 San Francisco Giants - 28 / 21 San Diego Padres - 23 / 16 Seattle Mariners - 10 / 15 Washington Nationals - 14 / 11 |

How good is the starting pitching on the serious NL playoff contenders? Based solely on wins-losses:
D-Backs (Co-NL West leader) Webb - 18 Haren - 13 Johnson - 10
Cubs (NL Central leader) Dempster - 14 Lilly - 12 Zambrano - 12
Cardinals (NL Central - 3rd, 2nd in WC) Lohse - 13 Looper - 11 Wellemeyer - 10
Phillies (NL East - 2nd) Moyer - 11 Hamels - 10 Kendrick - 10
Mets (NL East leader) Santana - 11 Pelfrey - 11 Maine - 10
Notes: Co-NL West leading Dodgers (Lowe 9), Marlins (Hendrickson 7) 3rd in the NL East and Brewers (Parra 9)
only have 1. Perez's next win could give Mets 4. 2 more by Marquis would give Cubs 4. The Wild Card leader Brewers have Suppan (8) and the amazing Sabathia
(7-0)
Marlins would have more if they didn't have the NL's worst defense. They are also the only NL contender not in the top 8 in ERA. Ditto Dodgers if they can only hit. Maybe Manny being Manny will solve that problem. |

When the Mets finally rotate back to playing actual major league teams, their bullpen meltdowns are going to be fucking epic. Historic even.

Doesn't matter if the the Mets bullpen has epic meltdowns. They'll never be able to catch the Phillies who have run away the division just like some
ppl predicted.
Nice job by Sandy Alomar managing the game in the late innings. I guess when you're 95 years old it's only natural that your brain doesn't function properly. Yeah, let's walk the bases loaded with the ever dangerous Andy LaRoche (.200 avg) and play the infield in w/ 1 out. Smart move. Looking at the big picture, you can't complain about a 6-1 road trip. Before heading to DC, if you told me the Mets would be in first w/ a 1.5 game lead at the conclusion of this trip, I would've signed for it in a heartbeat. When the Mets finally rotate back to playing actual major league teams, their bullpen meltdowns are going to be fucking epic. And yet with this horrendous bullpen, the Mets are 7 games over .500 against winning teams. While another team I know assumes the position and gets fistfucked every time they play a team w/ a winning record. |

All but invisible during the recent 6-0 Mets road streak, the stooges suddenly remerge clutching to minor rays of hope.
Why today of all days? Oh wait, *snap* the Mets lost the getaway game with Jose Reyes taking the day off. By any standard, I'll take a 6-1 road trip anytime. And if that one loss extends the tease for phrustruated phans before the inevitable phold, well, that's the cherry on the whip cream. |

hey bdebrun, w-l is a terrible metric -- especially when you're trying to judge teams who are leading divisions. no shit, teams with a lot of wins are
gonna have pitchers with a lot of wins.

bilkis, if you read it really carefully backwards, you can read "Chase Utley is better than Dan Uggla" somewhere in there.....

Looks like someone is under the impression that numbnuts Willie is still in the Mets dugout. I can see why you'd be cocky after the Phillies sweated out
those two one-run wins in San Diego. Even after Hamels received his first win in 8 starts, he is still the Phillies #3 starter. You know, since Moyer and
Kendrick have a better record.

All but invisible during the recent 6-0 Mets road streak, the stooges suddenly remerge clutching to minor rays of hope. Minor Rays? Why today of all days? Oh wait, *snap* the Mets lost the getaway game with Jose Reyes taking the day off. By that logic you should have lost yesterday with Wright getting the day off. By any standard, I'll take a 6-1 road trip anytime. And if that one loss extends the tease for phrustruated phans before the inevitable phold, well, that's the cherry on the whip cream.After last year, anything is considered a good standard in Metville.. :snort. Only a Mets fan could sniff out an "inevitable" fold. lolololol can see why you'd be cocky after the Phillies sweated out those two one-run wins in San Diego.I can see why you would be after all those four 2-1 games you eneded up on the wrong side off. It set a record if i remember correctly

Mets on the other hand have used a minor league lineup, smoke and mirrors, and a favorable schedule (not to mention an easier interleague one) to become contenders.
Speaking of the Mets minor league lineup, did you know the Mets have scored more runs than the juggernaut Phillies offense that plays their home games in a bandbox? Just thought I'd mention it. |
|||
StarRider |
|||

A- It's not a bandbox, and B- you need to score more runs than us.
I see you blamed todays loss on the manager again. Sad. Since you are so confident, i want to see you proclaim the Mets will win this division. With a straight face too. Ga head, i'll wait. |

DeBrun you forgot the Brewers. Their pitching isn't too shabby either.

what? how coudl they have good pitching if their pitchers dont have 10 wins. wins. wins is the way to define whether or not pitchers are good.

Umm, would you mind telling us who chickened out on a bet pertaining to which team will win the division? I can't seem to remember.
I can see why you would be after all those four 2-1 games you eneded up on the wrong side off. It set a record if i remember correctly Three 2-1 games. Wrong again. It would be nice if you could get your facts correct for a change. Speaking of being on the wrong side of things, what happened in the four series when the Mets/Phillies squared off? Yeah, that oughta shut you up. |
