There was actually a HUGE scandal when some tabloid said Kelly Clarkson had a prior recording contract. Turned out she only had a demo contract which is what all aspiring artists sign in order to record songs to submit to the record companies in order to attempt to get a contract but it was a BIG DEAL back in 2003/2003 when it was though Kelly had "cheated" her way into this amature competition. Now it seems that you can be a professional, flop and go back to being an amature...
