Xenogears (PlayStation)
Squaresoft strikes gold again! Xenogears is an absolute classic RPG, one of the best I have ever played. I am not sure how many of you guys have played or even heard of this game, but it is totally worth getting. It is pretty old, so you can probably find it for pretty cheap. Emulate it, even. You won't be disappointed. You play as Fei, a young man living in a peaceful little village. He was dropped off there several years ago when he was a kid, with no memory whatsoever. The villagers took him in with open arms, and accepted him. Everything was peaceful until one fateful day... On his way back to the village from his friend Citan Uzuki's house (anyone who played the Xenosaga games should recognize the name Uzuki) some giant robots, known as Gears, who are chasing each other break out into a battle right in the middle of the village, decimating almost everything. In a last ditch effort to save his friends, Fei hops into an abandoned Gear and tries to take matters into his own hands. Little does Fei know, doing this awakens a hidden power deep inside him, and he and the Gear go on a rampage. When Fei wakes up, the remaining villagers banish Fei, and send him off on his own. This is where the real game begins. On his way out of the area and through a dangerous forest, Fei encounters a pilot of one of the Gears that was involved in the battle. They team up out of necessity, and make it out of the cursed forest alive. Turns out she was being chased because she had stolen a prototype Gear that was supposedly more powerful than any other Gear. There is so much that happens in this game, I can't remember exactly how it all goes. Eventually Fei's friend Citan catches up with him, and has brought the Gear that caused all the destruction with him. Fei learns to harness his power and makes the Gear his own. As the story goes, Fei meets up with a rebel leader and joins in the battle to end the ages long war that has been plaguing the planet for so many years. I won't spoil anything, but there is much more to the story than this. This game delves into deeper subjects like creation, multiple lifetimes, and religion (which almost got this game banned from being released in the US in the first place). There are so many twists and turns in this games story, it can be very confusing and a lot to take in. But after all is said and done, it stands as one of the most satisfying RPG plots ever! The graphics are standard PS1 fair. It it like the opposite of Final Fantasy. The world is completely 3D, and you can rotate the camera around and view everything in detail. However, the characters that you play as are 2D. The music is epic, and fits the game perfectly. Gameplay wise, the combat is turn based. What makes this one different is that each character has several unique attacks, and can vary them and chain them up to rip off long powerful combos. You need to master this if you want to get very far in the game. Gear combat is a lot different, and adds another strategy mindset to the game. Overall, I am sure a lot of people are surprised to see this game ranked so high. However, I think it is a kick ass RPG, and one of the greatest games Squaresoft has ever made. I must have played through it 5 different times, and discover something different each time. If you have never played this, you NEED to go check it out. It is epic. The Xenosaga spin offs for the PS2 are very disappointing however.

I never got around to playing any other Square RPGs because I'm ALWAYS afraid they'll never live up to FF.
Xenogears and the two Chrono games are the two I really need to play, then, huh? |

Amanda's brother used to play that Star Wars game for hours on end, because of it, I have basically witnessed the entire game without ever once trying my
hand at it. Which is probably for the ebst cause that's not the sort of game i'd be any good at anyways.

Xenogears <3333333333333333333333333333
Single best video game I've ever played. Its been about 10 years since its release, and to this day I still haven't played a game that I've liked as much. The best and most complex storyline by far. Extremely well developed playable characters except perhaps for the last couple of ones to join the party. Krelian's the best villain in video game history (yes, even better than Sephiroth IMHO) and the many other villains are terrific as well. Best love story in video game history. Amazing plot twists (although one involving Fei was extremely predictable). Great ending. Amazing musical score, one of the few times that I actually purchased the soundtrack for the game too. When it comes to the storyline and characters, this game just has no equal. That said, the game certainly does have its flaws. From a gameplay perspective forget other games being this game's equal, pretty much every FF game easily surpasses it from a gameplay standpoint. Battle system is quite simple, and its the polar opposite of FF12 from a sidequest standpoint. Whereas that game had so many this game has what, one sidequest? Maybe two? And of course anyone familiar with this game will certainly have to bring up the disc 2 debacle. Graphics by today's standards aren't tremendous, but for their time they certainly were quite good, and revolutionary with the three dimensional, rotational maps. The cut scenes were pretty good, aside from the horrid dubbing, and it was good to see the game take the opposite standpoint that so many of the FF games took, rather than stock up on many FMV scenes and have a short game, the game keeps them to a minimum except for the first 10 hours or so and the last 5, making this an extremely long game. With me, story is the most important thing, and the story is just so insanely good in this game that it completey overshadows any gameplay flaws the game has. For SOA and spnintendo, I can't recommend this game enough. Really the only way I wouldn't recommend the game was if someone was an extremely religious person, as the game's stance on religion certainly would not make that person too happy And yep, the Xenosaga series on PS2 definately was dissappointing, although the final game in the series was very good.

Whelp, I'm highly religious so I guess I can't play it.
I worship the Gay Bar Gods. I go out and get drunk and act all gay as shit. I must worship at the Gay Bar weekly. It's really too bad. I was hoping to find a good game to play. |

I always heard Xenogears is impossible to find, so I've never played it. I did get the first Xenosaga though, and after playing through like 3/4s of it
(and by "playing" I really mean "watching") I finally got sick of it.
And any of you who haven't played at least Chrono Trigger, if not Cross too, can't call yourselves video game fans, sorry. |

Before I announce number 1 and 2 sometime within the next two days, I will announce a few games that you may be disappointed to see did NOT make the list.
Devil May Cry (PlayStation2)
Although this game and its offspring get stellar reviews pretty much everywhere I read, I was never really able to get into the series. The controls seemed kind of weird, and something just didn't seem right about it. It seemed like it did not know if it wanted to be an action game, a scary game, or a puzzle solving game. It was just ok for me. Based on the first one alone, I have never had a desire to check out any of the sequels. Madden NFL (any system)
In retrospect it just doesn't seem right that the Madden franchise did not earn a spot anywhere on the list. This is a series that I first started playing with Madden 64 for the N64. I had never been a big sports gaming fan, but that title seemed like an excpetion, and it kind of opened the floodgates to me playing more football games later on in life. This is one of the greatest franchises in any genre in gaming history. And I certainly wasted a lot of time playing it. But I never had any friends who liked to play, and that probably took away a lot of the fun because I hear multiplayer is great. An awesome series, but I have not played an installment of it since 05. Guess it just wasn't memorable enough. Jurassic Park (Genesis)
This game was an awesome 2D side scroller for the Sega Genesis. Loosely following the plot of the movie, you can play as Dr Grant or as a velociraptor. As Grant you are armed with an arsenal of weapons and must play through several dino-packed levels to make it to the end and escape the island. As the raptor, it is your goal to hunt and kill Dr Grant. There are lots of cool stages in the game - like the power station, the Visitor Center, and the raft level. The T-Rex stands as a classic villain in this game. A lot of fun, but not deep enough, and not fun enough in some spots to make it to the list. Bloodrayne (XBOX)
Blech. I thought this game would be bad ass, but it turned into a tedious chore that was like pulling teeth bringing myself to beat. Very repetitive, boring, overly hard in spots, and just flat out not fun. Bloodrayne gets a big FUCK YOU FOR WASTING MY TIME from me! Congo (Saturn)
Oh my dear fucking god. Looking back at this game on YouTube (in fact I still own it, I could go back and play it if I wanted to. But why would I want to do that?) brings back memories of how terribly shitty it was. I was one of the few folks on the planet that actually liked the Congo movie. I had also read and loved the book. I figured that I would go for the trifecta and shell out the money for the game too. Worst financial decision ever. Back when you're a kid, 40 some dollars is a lot of money! I bought this game thinking it would rule. Upon maybe 2 minutes of starting to play, I realized what a horrible decision I had made. The gameplay is choppy, the controls are shoddy, and the graphics are a pixelated mess. I was SO disappointed. Of course, because I had forked over the money, I had no choice but to play the game to the end until I beat it, which was an absolute chore. The game is mind numbingly difficult, as if the shoddy and unresponsive controls did not make it hard enough. I actually am kind of tempted to pop it in now, as a reminder of just how bad a game can get. Quite possibly the second worst first person shooter I have ever played. Space Hulk still ranks as the worst. A few other popular games I have never played: Paper Mario, anything Pokemon, any Castlevania game that isn't the original or Simon's Quest, Final Fantasy I-5, GTA IV, Gears of War, Grandia... Don't expect one of these to be #1 or #2. There are still 2 shocking snubs to come. I will announce them after I announce number #2. These are games that people probably think are sure fire locks for the list, and would possibly rank #1 on a lot of people's lists. Stay tuned. For your viewing pleasure, footage of the great Congo game: ETA: After watching this, I am having deja vu. Did I bitch about the Congo game already? If so, it deserves it. CONGO HATE!!! |
