Fable: The Lost Chapters (XBOX)


Ok, I never played the original Fable, so I don't know what the difference is between this version and the original. I know that there are more missions and a different final boss in the Lost Chapters. But whatever. This ranking is solely based on the Lost Chapters and not the original.

This game is a lot of fun to play, and there is a ton of stuff to do. I can see how some people can get so lost in this game. It starts out pretty cool. You're a little kid, and your village gets burned down and invaded. Your family gets killed (I'll leave this post spoiler free :)) and you wind up at some kind of orphanage or something where they are training you to be a warrior. The cool thing about this game is how your character gets older as the game progresses. If you spend enough time playing the game, you can turn into an old man.

Fable plays like an action RPG, combat wise. I am actually not a huge fan of the combat system in this game. It seems kind of clunky and hard to master. If it played more smoothly, like, say, Kingdom Hearts, this title would probably score higher. There are a ton of things you can do in the game. Like changing your character's appearance, buying property, doing good/evil deeds (I always go the evil route), having sex, farting, getting drunk, picking fights, and much much more. There is never nothing to do in this game. And the landscapes/environments are frickin huge.

Overall I think there are a lot of areas where the game could have used improvement. Like the combat system, annoying load times, the overall flow of things, etc. That's what is truly keeping it from being an upper echelon game with me. And it only gets #93 on the list.

Shadow of the Colossus (PlayStation2)


Funny, this game was just mentioned.

OK, just like Beyond Good & Evil, Shadow of the Colossus was a sleeper title. It was a cult hit that did not sell a lot of copies, or get much media attention. Yet it got rave reviews in every game magazine or website that I looked at. It intrigued me greatly, so when I saw it on sale for only 10 bucks at the CD store by my house, I had to buy it.

The concept of this game is very unique. Usually in most games, you fight lots of creatures/baddies on your way to go battle the main boss. In this game, all there are is main bosses. There is nothing in between. The challenge is finding where the bosses are hiding. The world is freaking humongous. Even with an online strategy guide at my disposal, I often found myself getting lost on a regular basis. The goal of the game is to hunt down and kill all (16, is it?) Colossuses. Each one is different and unique. Some are gigantic, some are small. The way you defeat each one varies greatly, and is the main challenge of the game.

Visually, this game is a mixed bag. The scenery and landscapes of the game are surreal and stunning. And the atmospeheric effects are fabulous. You really feel like you are a part of this large, sprawling fantasy world. The whole world in this game is like a piece of art. There is a downside though. When zoomed in, your character and his horse can become very pixelated and blocky. Same with walls and other things when you get to close to them. From a distance everything looks good, in close: not so much. The sound is great. The musical scores are sweeping and epic. There is no spoken dialogue, at least in English anyway. You have to read subtitles whenever anyone talks, which can be annoying.

Overall, this is a very fun and absorbing game. It is very short however. And those gamers who love mindless mayhem, killing, and carnage may find themselves a bit disappointed here. This is definitely a thinker's game.

Funny side note: I remember the night I beat this game very well. I was playing in Jun's House 4 and there was an HoH competition going on. I was ineligible to compete because I was an outgoing HoH. White Boy (SuperJude) ended up winning the challenge, and there was a twist where he had to give it to an ally of his. He ended up giving it to Mr Boston (Arrogant Dreamer) and she put Hottie and Goldie up on the block. Don't know why I am mentioning this. For some reason every time I think of Shadow of Colossus, this night pops into my head.

Super Mario Sunshine (Gamecube)


Here you have it. The lowest rated Mario game on the list. I will admit I was a bit let down with this title. After the awesomeness that was Super Mario 64, there was never a really great 3D platformer Mario title. Super Mario Sunshine looked like it was going to be the action/adventure game we were all waiting for. Stellar graphics, creative levels..... but something just wasn't right with the game. I did not like the whole "Water Backpack" gimmick. I thought it was stupid and unnecessary. I wanted a straight up Mario action game in the mold of Mario 64 and did not get it.

It's a fun game, don't get me wrong. There are similarities to Mario 64. There is a central hub you spend the majority of the game in, picking which stages you wanted to face. Except instead of a castle this time, it was a tropical village. Some of them you have to do in a certain order, some you do not. In the stages you collect stars. I think they call them Shines in this game. My favorite part of the game is the extremely difficult bonus stages where you have to navigate tough obstacles or fall to your death. They are very fun and a good challenge. Some of the really tough ones can be frustrating though.

All in all it is a good game and I was addicted to it for a very long time. It stands by itself as a very solid title. It is also a really good challenge too! But compared to the greatness of the other Mario games it falls a bit short.
