Rewatching TAR2.... |
Lead | |
|
So I started re watching TAR2 last night and I realized that in Phil's opening speech to the racers that part of it is dubbed over. Twice when the camera
moves away from Phil it sounds like it was something he recorded later, rather than what was being said right at that time. Did anyone else notice this? I just
found it odd that I never noticed that before!

I've noticed that it's dubbed in most of the seasons. His pitstop convos are dubbed sometimes as well.

It just seemed so OBVIOUS that I was shocked. Maybe because they were switching back and forth from him talking to the racers to him dubbing over the scene.

Speaking of TAR2 editing, I wish they'd do that thing they did for Peggy/Claire and have the other racers talk about the eliminated team before they go.
TAR2-3 really felt like a group of people who genuinely interacted instead of a bunch of random teams who met occasionally (one of the weak points of TAR12, which seemed to cut out all the alliance-based stuff or any interteam bonding). |

TAR 1 had that Dave & Margaretta elimination that was much like Peggy & Claire's, andI think D&M's was much more heartwarming.

I think D&M's was much more heartwarmingDefinitely, but that had lots of teams present at the pitstop to give them a proper goodbye and I can see why they don't do that anymore for suspense reasons. But a few confessionals about how the other teams reacted to the elimination would be nice. |

Awww, Dying Clown has a heart after all. Next thing DC will declare their love for all things Jon & Al. But yeah I agree. Which leads into the segue way
that Jon & Al also got "remembered" by Chip at least at their elimination. Wasn't that the last team to get that?
I think the dub over was only for the Ford product placement vehicles. Probably an after the fact business deal. But Racers do say the only part of the Race that is rehearsed any is the starting line so that the Racers can get the feel of the technical stuff and camera guys can get shots of Racers buckling up without actually holding up their team while taking the shots. Visually TAR2 is the best start with the cars literally racing across the desert. Race wise Season 1 was the best with the Racers not even knowing which airport to go to or which means of transportation to take. And trivia stuff. As far as I know, when the first cars arrived at Cristo Redentor was where the "previously on" music was first used ever. So weirdly each episode when we have the previously on moment I always flash back to Rio and Peach feeling sick. And I imagine the cabbie never getting that trunk open for Blake & Paige leading to their early elimination and Deirdre & Hillary going on to win TAR2. More trivia: Deirdre's name is misspelled in Episode 1's titles of the CBS broadcast -- Ep 2 onwards it was corrected not that it mattered by then. And it was also corrected for GSN's Episode 1 broadcast too. But I still have an old screen capture of the misspelling I saved where it reads Diedre. Or was DIE-dre just a hint at who went out first, hah.

greenraven1 wrote: The dub over was not just about the cars, but in different parts of the starting speech. I can't remember the exact part, but I can go back and check it tonight. (Ya torrents.) I can imagine that the starting line would be a very nerve wracking experience. Getting used to camera men chasing you around might be awkward too for the first little while. I agree, visually TAR2 has the best starting line, not to mention arriving via helicopter would be amazing. I bet the view was fantastic! I recently got a
friend of mine to start watching TAR. He has seen 1 episode of the later seasons, so I sat him down to watch TAR1. He LOVED it. He especially loved how the
teams had to make their way to the airport by themselves. Probably since he has spent a lot of time in NYC he can sympathize with how difficult that could be!

I watched TAR2 once on a cable channel AXN on a single year (2002).

Blake's fluorescent teeth frightened me in the first two minutes of the premiere episode.

Blake lost his wallet during the Brazil leg in leg 2. He and Paige were worried and the locals helped him to take his money.

One of the reasons I like TAR2 is because of the major flight drama going from Brazil to South Africa - I think it was the only instance where there was major
difficulty in getting between two major hubs (as opposed to the difficulty in going from not so large airports like, say, Zanzibar to Warsaw).

I think I remember what you're talking about.
In TAR1's premier Phil goes into more detail about the rules, usage of money (specifically mentioning strategy for saving/spending) and clues (exactly how the race's system of clues works) than we've see in other versions. I could be wrong, but I'm thinking the dubbing of part of Phil's starting line speech in TAR2 was to put in as a shorter replacement for the longer more detailed explanation of the rules. Those left out details become obvious to the viewer as they watch the show anyway, and this allows them to get to the actual racing quicker. |

The dubbing probably was (and is) just simply ADR because of ambient sounds interfering.

TAR5 had the best finish line. The aerial camera panning in on Phil and the helicopter following the teams on the freeway were awesome. They haven't done
that since because it is difficult to get permission in most cities, but it shouldn'tve mattered in Anchorage. I guess it doesn't matter because none
of the winners have really deserved that treatment since.

TAR 2 is third, right behind TAR 3 (best cast ever) and TAR 1 (all of the elements came together so well, it was almost like watching a scripted show)

TAR2 was the best season ever.
And I somewhat disagree about NZ. Had they left NZ after the first leg then NZ would have remained awesome. The tandem bungee jump was excellent. People who could handle heights strapped together with people who couldn't. Wil and Oswald made that segment great. It was the only bungee jump to be interesting other than TAR1's bungee swing. And the sheep herding RB was one of my favorites ever. Wil herding "sheeps", Chris the Sheep Whisperer and Oswald hilariously threatening them in Spanish. Add in the early part of the episode with Blake sneaking his carry-on aboard and being held up by the others at the other end because of it and it was a damn good leg. It was only the second leg in NZ that was weak and, coupled with Oswald & Danny's elimination, sad. I think what gives people the sense of TAR2 slowing down at the end wasn't the two NZ legs. I think it was the last NZ leg coupled with the Hawaii leg. By Season 2 we knew that "positioning for the final leg" didn't really matter so the Hawaii leg didn't really matter and wasn't as exciting as a lot of other TAR2 legs. But the Hawaii leg was hidden a bit because it was piggy backed with the last leg where things really kicked into gear from Wil losing the clue ("Follow that plane!) to Wil vs The Ice Globe to Chris & Alex going to Fairbanks which on the first viewing you didn't know if it would bite them or not to the awesome finale run to Phil in his long, black Goth coat overlooking the Golden Gate. Not only best visual start but best visual finish as well. And, like another poster once said, it had that wonderful "sun dappled" race course that was just awesome. Couple that with no boring young dating couples and a cast I thoroughly enjoyed watching and TAR2 just absolutely rocked. The editing was at the top of it's game. The music was great without the hideously overdone wall-to-wall stuff of current races that prevents you from getting to know and race with the teams and instead jacks up "stuff" to a totally artificial level you can't believe. The camera work was already top notch. The teams had depth and weren't cardboard cutouts. Phil appeared at the mats for the first time throughout and the show was still so fresh. It held on to TAR1's edge while polishing it to a more refined level without losing all that edge like some latter seasons would. From the best starting visuals to the best finale ever to people who were actually interesting and worth getting to know, to especially the feel of competition meeting camaraderie in truly an experience of a lifetime; it encapsulated what I love about TAR. TAR2 rocked!
