Boy Jedi, you sound moody and frustrated! To suggest that they planted players is ridiculous to be honest...

Aaron-MOR3 (Not really shown TOO much, but he was given the leadership role, and he did discuss strategy a little, about not wanting to be the leader)
Amanda-UTR1 (She had the one confessional, and she was barely shown, other than saying she was happy to have James and Aaron on her tribe) Courtney-MORN3 (She'd probably be getting an OTTN ranking had they editors shown her past the 30 minute mark. But when they DID show her, they wanted us to dislike her.) Denise-UTRP1 (One confessional, and she was barely shown at all, other than when Jeff handed her the flint. It's very tough deciding who's UTR and who's INV, because they're so similar based on the description, and the differences are very subtle.) James-CP3 (Not necessarily the forefront of the tribe, but he got some decent face time and he was made out to be the likable hero.) Jean-Robert-MORN2 (Similar situation to James, only he was made out to be kind of a jerk.) Leslie-CPP3 (She's a good person for being nice to James and trying to help him open up, but the editors definitely focused on her leaving the ceremony and being ultra-Christian.) Todd-CPP3 (This tribe didn't get a lot of face time, but of them, I'd say Todd probably got the best edit for Fei Long.) Ashley-OTTM5 (Lot of camera time on her, and she was shown to be kinda stupid and bitchy, along with being sick.) Chicken-OTTM4 (Made to look very stupid by basically not talking with anyone about what he thought, so he got the outcast edit.) Dave-CPM4 (Dave was the guy that comforted both Ashley and Peih-Gee when they weren't doing too well, and he took on the leadership position.) Erik-UTR1 (One question at tribal council is the only time we even saw him.) Frosti-MOR4 (Talked a lot about his skills and being young, and was shown talking strategy with Chicken, along with his screw up in the challenge.) Jamie-UTR1 (There's a Jaime in this season? Really?) Peih-Gee-CPM4 (Cried early on and a later on too, but then got to be really bitchy. But she did try to take on the leader role, so she was more active than an MOR.) Sherea-UTR2 (Shown quite a bit without really saying anything. She pretty much whined a couple of times, but nothing too bad.)

I'd just like to add that I'm happy I can't pick out the winner before the premiere was over. Like many, Earl was an easy pick with his "King
of Fiji" and "poker face" lines. This time I'm not so sure, though Todd, Aaron and James seem like early frontrunners on Fei Long. Not sure
about Zhan Hu yet but possibly Frosti or Dave. The only woman who seems to have a shot right now is Leslie, and Peih-Gee is a huge stretch. I'm not
eliminating anyone 100% yet, but I will start after the second episode. Erik, Jaime, Denise, Amanda, and Sherea need to have a great episode 2 edit to have any
chance at winning right now.

Sadly, the rules state that a TCQ means you can't be INV1. I guess I kind of agree. Therefore, based on guidelines... Erik should be UTR1. |

However if this was episode 7, Erik would be INV... He gets lucky this episode with UTR1, but he has to do more than a TCQ later on down the road.

Sadly, the rules state that a TCQ means you can't be INV1. I guess I kind of agree. Therefore, based on guidelines... Erik should be UTR1.Yes, the only person that I see as a possible INV1 is Jaime but since she did get some other facetime besides a confessional or a TCQ (and Erik didn't have much more than her), I may end up going UTR1 for her. |

Wasn't Jaime the one who said "I'm not wearing a bra" at the start or something?
And I completely agree with you Jam (as usual). |

Wasn't Jaime the one who said "I'm not wearing a bra" at the start or something?Yup. She also was one of the "dancing girls" along with Ashley and Sherea. Other than that, she didn't have much except for maybe a sentence here or there. Could be UTR1, barely. |

Oh god Jedi, I really disagree. I thought the women were the stars of the show tonight. Sure, Courtney may have been a bit of a bitch, and Leslie did have
problems with the temple, but this is the first episode. I was shocked we got a 1D view of 80% of the contestants, that's great when you compare it to
recent past seasons. Episode 1 isn't where you get into deep character arcs and dynamic characters. You try to introduce everyone, and the tribal
situations, that's the best you can hope for in the first episode, and as much as I love to remember s1 and s2, that's how they were too.

Well there goes my player right away, I'm kind of disappointed, but at the same time it was hard to hear and understand Chicken, he spoke way too quietly,
so at least I won't have to watch the next 10 episodes turning up my volume really loud to try to hear and understand him.
Probably not winning -Frosti: He said he wanted to prove himself to his tribe, and then failed, not a winner's start. -Jaime: Was she even in this episode? -Amanda: Was she even in this episode? -Erik: I think he got one TC question, and that was it, way too quiet. -Jean-Robert: Seemed kind of OTT to me rather then CPish, not that good of a start, seemed like a distraction who might go home early to me rather then a winner. -Courtney: Just complained about everything, and said she hates everyone on her tribe. May still win, but I doubt it -Denise: Introduced as the school lunch lady, then disappeared, tripped at the challenge, she just didn't seem that important to me. -Sherea: Shown as another Cirie, but a lot less P, maybe even slightly N, and have our Cirie's or Cirie clone's ever won before? -Peih-Gee: Wanted to step up as the leader, but got called out on not acting like one with her crying, is one of the people on Zhan Hu who wants to get things done rather then be lazy. I just don't think that a winner would get a start quite like hers. -Dave: Stepped up as a leader, then failed to save Chicken from being voted out, shown as the elder of the tribe along with Chicken. He's kind of giving me Nate vibes right now, that he might be getting the edit of "the guy who tries real hard but can never come through". Maybe, not quite sure -James: The insociable strong guy, but he did get included in the episode and talked about, casual viewers will remember him. -Ashley: got the decoy boot but love her edit. I'm not quite sure what to think about her at the moment, she could turn into a distraction though. -Leslie: I kind of just got the feeling that they put her in wherever she fit to introduce others, and whenever she did something important (like leaving the ceremony). Not feeling like a winner, but certainly not that bad of a start. On my radar, though not that strongly -Aaron: Kind of reminded me of Aras for some reason at first, then he started to seem more like an Edgardo. He's someone to keep an eye on. -Todd: Definitely the big gamer on his tribe, he could be the huge distraction for Fei Long, or he could cool off and become more winnerish. One scene I found really interesting was the one where Ashley/Sherea/Jaime/Dave/Erik/Frosti shown goofing around and playing rather then working while Peih-Gee complains, lazy edit already on 3/4's of a whole tribe. Watching this episode kind of gave me the feeling that almost everyone on Zhan Hu isn't going to win from that scene. Even though I'm not giving many people much consideration for the win, this season feels kind of refreshing already. Last time Earl and Yau-Man looked like the clear front runners from a mile away to me, this time no one is really giving me too strong of a winnerish feeling yet.

Jamie's one of the lazy dancing girls. She was the one who had no bra (that could have been Coutney or Ashley). We know that because we take notes.
She leaves absolutely no impression on the viewers, either through confessional/TCQ or otherwise. That's INV no matter which way you cut it. |

Initial reaction: Liked it. Satisfying. BEAUTIFUL location. What kind of formations are those mountains? Gotta look it up... Karsts OK. Whatever.
Nice opening. And did anyone else notice that (maybe for the first time) the music as JP went to get the voting urn was different? You didn't have that low-pitched yodel sort of thing that was always a musical standard of that moment in the show. Instead, it was female and equally haunting. Nice touch. Gorgeous TC. Overall edit - very good. Just a few 'uh... who is THAT' moments. A reminder: The "only the clothes on your back" opening should never - ever - be a surprise after Pearl Islands. But it was. Then JP gave 'em shoes and fire. Sigh. I guess after the horrific trainwreck of Fiji they decided that true suffering in a rainy, humid environment didn't make for great TV. At least give them a flint. And they did. They might go hungry, but they won't dehydrate. Chicken: How not to play the game. It's one thing to back off when people are ignoring you. But then come to the rescue, dammit. People were asking - begging - for your opinion and you just went into your little hole. Or hutch, or whatever chickens roost in. Worst mumble since drrrrhhhhmhbdle.... excuse me - Darrah. Leslie. My WD, and will have to watch it again before coming up with a definitive answer. After the initial scene of discomfort in the temple, she was quite nice, outgoing, friendly, always sort of around. And her talk with Gentle Giant James was probably the emotional highlight of the show. Either CPM or MORM, and clearly a 3. I got a Kathy Varick vibe from her. She's emotional, both good and bad, and I'll be interested to see how she goes. Is she a contender? Sure. Either CP or MOR, with good face time, and seeing her bond with at least one other person? Yeah. Not a superwinner edit, but there really wasn't one of those. (thank god!) I liked the wrestler! Kind of surprised. Poker dude? Idiot. how to make an enemy. Just because you might bluff occasionally in Survivor doesn't mean it's poker. They can gang up on you, dude. You should have wanted to bond with Todd, not show off. You tried to intimidate him. Idiot. Todd - was pretty good, I'll admit. Got the "don't want to be a leader" guy to be a leader. Heh. James. Liked that guy a lot. He beat the Parkeur (sp?) dude. Blonde whiny NY waitress? Yuk. I got the sense overall that I met just about all the cast - the best opening episode since EI, which is still the high-water mark for an edit that made every player memorable. Is the "complex tribe" thing still going on? heh... I'll give my ratings over the weekend. VERY OPTIMISTIC FOR THIS SEASON. |

Just finished watching, and I thought it was pretty darn good. At least in terms of character- yes, 16 again! KISS, baby, KISS -Keep It Simple, Stupid.
my main concern is the location actually, it's interesting so far but I'm afriad they're going to be cornered into static movement which tends to happen in the muddy seasons (Amazon, Gaut) -give me a long sprawling beach with lots of nooks of fooliage -bring back Marquesas' waterfall! The first post I read had dictatorship's Positive ranting for Courtney, and I thought COME ON, let's not do this. Clearly, after 16000 seasons, we should know the intent by now. She's negative all the way. However, my favorite character -Courtney!!! Thought each of her scenes were gold, and pretty funny. And also thought possibly she's a character with legs. Okay, I don't know if any of you picked up on the gay flight attendent -go back and watch, he had a couple of confessionals. Har har -okay, obviously Todd is THE PLAYER TO BEAT, and is the poker player going to take him down. Todd has everything going for him right now, but of course, on the flip side, he has everything going for him. I'll tag him but rule him inconclusive. Then we have Leslie -Christians are always the ones to watch out for in this game -they seem to have a good track record with producing women winners -Tina, Vecepia, Dani, and Mother Teresa (season 23) Then we have our feel good people -James and Denise -I loved both of them, and was probably supposed to. Saddle up James and Denise, CBS is going to exploit you into the ground. Then we have Aaron the guy who doesn't want to be a leader and now is being forced to be. Ashley and PD have their roots in long term storied as well. The key scene to watch is the ritual scene -the theme of the show, the important moment -so I think this will be the scene to always go back to -9 times out of 10, our winner will be attached to it -whether it be positive OR negative (usually it's positive -bridging the winner to embracing the power of the culture) The heel girls on the losing team are out of the running (New Cirie and Blond Not Courtney) -everyone else looks pretty good. I think the winner if not PD on the yellow tribe is coming from Todd's red flight attendent tribe. Did Leslie give advice to James the hero? Did we need to see that? If James is the character they milk this season, then it bodes well for Leslie being tied to him. He gets a sob story and strategic advice. So far the negative is Courtney, the positives are Denise and James -the rest is not important and nitpicking -other setups were more important. Complex Todd and Leslie, and Aaron. Oh yeah, Erik is out. |

well... its time to create a new rating. UCP or uber complex. All because of the man named dave. First he comforts the two who are the weakest saying oh you
arent out of the game cheer up. then we get a confessional with him saying well we need to vote these two people out. WTF WAS THAT? its either the most mixed
messaged lying bipolar character we have ever seen or he is a tripple negative for pretending to be pg's and Ashley's friend then immediately
backstabbing both of them. Ive never seen anyone turn on someone so fast since coby archa

That segment between Todd and J-R was too random to be meaningless. I think these two will go far as enemies or surprinsingly enough, buddies. James also had a
"in for the long haul" edit.
Dave, Frosti and Aaron both had a mid-game exit edit. They also fit the bill. I can see Dave and Frosti getting booted back to back right at the merge. Dave strikes me as Andrew 2.0 Leslie had an early exit edit. Maybe I'm biased because I don't like most Christians, but her refusal to abide by the rules and Jeff making a deal out of it came off as negative IMO. Ashley is the female version of Robbbbbb. No way she makes the merge, but she'll make waves in the few episodes she's in. I'm still trying to figure out if PG's comments about her grandpa was a hint that she goes far or if it was just irrelevant. So far her edit is almost identical to Sylvia's which is not a good thing. Also trying to figure out if Sherea's comments about not being an outdoor girl meant an early exit or if it will be Ciriesque irony. Completely in the dark about Amanda, Jamie, Denise and Erik. Courtney is a huge question mark. Her edit was definitely negative but she somehow came across as an underdog too. Kinda like Shii-Ann. She won't be a player though. |

First Thoughts:
Fei Long - Dragon
Aaron - Didn't really stick out in my eyes. He was just there. Something around MOR 2-3 should fit his rating.
Amanda - Didn't get any good airtime. I forget what her confessional was. The only thing I know about her is that she is Miss. Montana... or was. UTR1 because I remember she had a confessional... just don't know what she said.
Courtney - The whiner, but I can see why she whines too but, she really needs to learn that not everyone is from new york. I definitely think she is on the outs in her tribe, or will become on the outs and she may become a huge female character that we haven't had in a long time! MORN suits her I am just happy she got airtime =]
Denise - To be honest, I expected her to get more airtime. I thought she would be an outcast on her tribe, she might be but she didn't get much airtime. All I know she is a lunch lady and she loves her family *hence crying on the picture of them* UTRP?
James - Another quiet guy, but we got into his mind. It seems he might form a close bond with Leslie. Hmm. I think we will see more of him trying to work his way into the core of the tribe. Plus, helping in challenges won't hurt him yet.
Jean-Robert - I don't like this guy at all. But, hence why he got a *good* edit. Of course it will play into the next episode but I think he is playing the game way to hardcore.. way to early. I don't know but I feel like a CPN for him?
Leslie - Here is white Jameka! Of course we aren't suppose to hate her because she likes her religion. She also seems to be playing the game. Especially with the whole James scene. For now I would give her a MORP/CPP?
Todd - Winner? I don't know. People are saying that he is the winner but maybe the winner this time might be hidden more because it might not be another Aras/Yul/Earl winner. All I know is that he wants to play the game and he doesn't want to be the leader. Why does everyone on this tribe not want to be the leader?
Zhan Hu - Tiger
Ashley - She definitely got the most airtime for the females this episode mainly because she was the obvious decoy boot. She does want to play the game and she does want to be known as tough... can she live up to her title? OTT/CP/MOR? Not sure on tone but it was either borderline M or N
Dave - Suprised me! I thought he would be an UTR Male. But he stepped up to the leader role! I see him actually being a good leader. I am not sure on his rating though. He reminds me of Andrew Savage though.
Erik - Had a TC question. UTR1
Frosti - Youngest survivor ever eh? Don't have much to say. He didn't come through for his tribe at the challenge (which wasn't really *his* fault) He is in the majority of the tribe which is good for him. MORish?
Jaime - Somehow I remember her. She didn't get much airtime but she had comments from here and there. Still, UTR1 is necessary.
Peih-Gee - Please excuse me from my language but I knew she would be another bossy bitch. I am glad she didn't get the boot because I like the bossy ones to stick around. She wants to be the leader but the tribe shot her down.
Sherea - Why is everyone calling her another Cirie clone. Cirie is 36, Sherea is a decade younger... hell even Cassandra was 42! Other than her looks I sense no Cassandra or Cirie at all. She is in a good position in the tribe so she has potential but I feel UTR2 is necessary. Only because she was in almost every scene for Zhan Hu. Losers:
Chicken - Played the game totally wrong and isolated himself which caused him to go. OTT might be necessary, since I do feel he received the most airtime and did happen to do things that are necessary for OTT. Oh well. Pictures Credit: Survivor Shrine I hope I wasn't too off. These aren't my official ratings though. I need to re-watch. But it was fun =] ![]() ![]()

The thing that really strikes me as odd was I remember Jeff said in an interview that "PG is smart, and she knows how to make being a leader work."
but in this opening episode they showed how her trying to be a leader DIDN'T work. I've been trying to put my finger on it for a while.
Although for a first episode edit I really think Peih-Gee is almost eliminated (unless we have another Morasca) but I watched it with my aunt and she seemed to think that "If the asian girl doesn't go first, she'll win." I disagree based on edit, but, it was an interesting observation. |

Joss Wolfe wrote: Hmmmm, how about we keep it with what was tended -CP -scope of the future and reflective. It was a complex layered edit. We need to stop proposing so many types of ratings. wyl, the thing about Leslie was definitely layered -she left the temple in real life -that's good tv. But her sound byte is left in, "Let people see who I am, and where it gets me." (I'm paraphrasing) And yes, Todd and JR is a setup for a long term arc -unless it's a major, major blowup in the next episode on one of them goes in dramatic fashion. PJ's grandfather confessional is inconclusive right now -it's the type of sound byte they want for that important segment and a great way to start off the game -and she's Chinese and her grandfather died -so we have to flag it and revisit it later -she certainly had plenty of other amo to make her a character to pay attention to. I'll have to pay attention to Courtney in the temple again -it was a great scene -but now we have to ask -how long did the ceremony go on -were other
players constantly corrected like she was, did others complain, did Courtney also praise the ceremony but it was left on the cutting room floor?

I thought that Jean-Robert's intimidating strategy or whatever the hell he calls it was stupid because it made Todd an unnecessary enemy. I don't like
him because he's stupid, but I think the editors was trying to show us that he IS perceptive, and that his poker skills DID come into play. Sure, at first,
it seemed like the editors were mocking him since his accuasation was off-base, but later, we did learn that Todd was a MAJOR gamer. So Jean-Robert's first
impression was correct.
Now was his and Todd's scene weird and painful to watch? Yes. I can still see Todd at the end pleading for Jean-Robert not to spread the word. But does it translate to a negative rating for Jean-Robert? No, that's what S1- is for. |
