Francois, basically, the 'guideline' is used to eliminate the person edited as likely to win in the second-last episode. Conversely, the person given the most doubt in that episode is usually the winner. gr said it exactly, francois. It's not an Edgic guideline, but it holds true, at least the first part, so I pay attention to it. "Most doubt" can always be debatable to some but the winner doesn't look like it in the penultimate ep. It's like a Walker Texas Ranger episode, the good guys follow the case, then near the end the bad guys capture them and have the upper hand, only for the good guys to whip them in the end. My ex watched walker and I had to sit through some, mind you, not a fan of that show. Blech. I wanted to bring it up for two reasons. One, Tom and Todd, all the doubt right before the end, it creeps on you. Don't buy it. Two, I think Parvati has people who just don't want to see her win and can go overboard if she looks toooo vunerable tonight, which is what happened with Amanda/Todd last year. Don't root, step back and ask if the winner really has it locked up to the average fan with one ep to go. It never has come off that way yet. It would be an anomoly if it did. Now if Parvati looks like an absolute lock tonight, then I start to worry. Michael |

Yes, very different, Craig, as anyone who reads these posts with any objectivity at all can see immediately.

Craig, CL plays Edgic, you want to make us like Parvati regardless of anything else, at least to my eyes. That's the difference.

Just a response to little digs along the lines of "Parvati will win edgically but she still sucks."

If Parvati does win, I think it reveals something about a debate we had earlier in the season, in one of Parv's neglected episodes was when she got her fat
lip. The editors, IF she's the winner as people are suggesting she might be, realize the indelibility of such an image and it should contribute to
visibility - somewhat - and carefully...this is not to be over applied though.
This is not a "reaction shot" sort of suggestion. It's a form of non-verbal visibility that is quite different thant the Brandon-getting-lots-of-reaction-shots arguemnt. If the editors are including images (or perhaps challenge footage like an Ozzy or Danni situation where there's domination and Probst repeatedly calls it out) which carry more weight than a reaction shot, I believe it does contribute to visibility in the sense that the editors re-watch the episode which they've made a rough cut of and ask "is our winner's story being told in this episode?" With the fat lip, with total challenge domination (read: Not so-and-so got one call out by Probst...but huge domination, injury, etc.), visibility is affected. Contrasting that episode's injuries, Jonathan's was covered because it led to his infection and expulsion from the game. Ami's was NOT covered because it was irrelevant and she'd be going home without affecting the end game, and Parvati's WAS covered in part because it looked especially fascinatingly morbid (I love morbid fascination as a concept...car accidents...ship wrecks...Parvati's fat lip) but also because...as people are suggesting...she could be our winner and it was a good opportunity to show her coping with life on the island - in a non-flirty way. However, this is not a measurable visibility, not something Warrior's chart would or could ever reflect. It's a nuance, and I don't want to suggest it's anything more than a nuance, but it is worth mentioning. ETA: If she loses, the detractors of Parv's fat lip being meaningful of course win a bit of authority with their position being that it was not meaningful. |

The in-depth onscreen study of Parv's lip injury involved exactly ONE more shot than Ami got (that lasted maybe 15 or 20 minutes of glossy closeups
accompanied by the orchestra of harps and violins flown in for the occasion).
It wasn't dwelled upon, but some people - possibly horrified that their imaginary squeeze's lovely lip could be permanently disfigured - chose to measure Parv's onscreen time by the millisecond. Apparently, time must slow down to a diaphonous, slo-mo crawl when she's on the screen. Since the merge, Cirie has became merely a member of Team Parmanda and the Black Widows Brigade.LOL. Except for all the plotting and scheming. |

Chap, was Parvati's lip highlighted more than, say, Ami's knee? I seem to recall that we were shown scenes of Ami being tended to by Amanda, for
instance.
Edited to unmix metaphors.

Relynn wrote: You can't just say something had to be shown or not shown without a reason to back it up. Truthfully, the editors don't have to show anything, but
they choose to show particular things for two reasons: (1) to provide an entertaining episode on its own merit and (2) to develop a continuing story that ties
the series together. The editors didn't have to show James commenting on Parvati's move except as to how it impacted his own position (especially when
he was out of the game shortly thereafter through no fault of Parvati's). Yes, there was a little mention by James about how he was doomed, which appears
to have been done to add what little suspense was allowed to Jason's blindside, but even that was subsumed to the item of greater editing impact - what
James thought of Parvati's play, which could only matter in front of the jury. It is manufactured doubt.

Sorry, Scep.
Both Grenade Jumper and I posted similar views to those expressed in your post, albeit in relation to different things! Sorry, I hadn't seen your post. |

I disagree with the winner, the doubts have almost always been hit over the head... Honestly, I'm not sure either way, because I do think the Amanda would win was to over the head either. I think the fact that they were subtle hints, would suggest that they are perhaps subtly telling us why Parvarti loses. There has been "No I will Never Vote for Parvarti." Or, look how Parvarti's playing up to the jury and the jury is annoyed with Parvarti. But I feel in regards especially to the judgment of Amanda's editing, that people have been to quick to write her off, partially because of last year. I don't think you can go by the first episode, because there have been winners who have had quiet first episodes. (Anyone remember Tina! She was practically invisible!) But there was a reason that Tina was the one not shown. What I'd suggest is perhaps they were doing a similar thing when Amanda was the only Favorite not given a Confessional in the first episode. Even Ami had confessionals, and Ami has had no impact on this game, Amanda has. And I don't think well they showed us Parvarti's fat lip (that was kind of hard not see) that suddenly means it's not important that Parvarti didn't have a reaction confessional to her new tribe.) And honestly? I think we are due for a Tina like winner. I'm tired of them one hundred percent giving away the winner, at the first episode.

Chap, was Paravati's lip highlighted more than, say, Ami's knee? I seem to recall that we were shown scenes of Ami being tended to by Amanda. Ami needed surgery on her knee and was on crutches months after the show. Parv's lip was comparatively minor but was highlighted more. Remember when I said Alexis didn't matter because the editors ignored her finger injury in ep.7? You had to pay attention to screencaps to know she even had a finger injury. Yes, all of the remaining Black Widows have "made their bones" but Parvati is still perceived as and edited as the leader. |

Craig, you probably don't need me to tell you that it really doesn't matter for editing purposes if Ami's leg had to be amputated and fed to
starving hyenas after the show was over. What matters is what was shown during the show itself. It sometimes feels like there's some kind of
Groundhog Day thing happening in edgic about this relatively uncomplicated concept.
And, props to you. You were absolutely right about the ultimate significance of glossing over Alexis' finger injury. |

Relynn wrote:But it wasn't just one episode. It was the first four episodes. Amanda was a complete non-entity for the first 1/4 of the season. If she was the winner, they would have found something for her. Think of it in terms of basic storytelling. In an Agatha Christie murder mystery, the killer, the victim, and either Poirot or Miss Marple are all introduced early in the story. People introduced later as possible suspects are red herrings. In a Jane Austen romance, the heroine, and the guy she snares are introduced early in the story, and the schmuck that gets introduced further into the story is usually the cad, and the girl that gets introduced later is either an obstacle to the romance or a harlot. In King Arthur, the people introduced early get played by Monty Python regulars, and the people introduced later get killed by a watery tart throwing swords around. |

My ex watched walker and I had to sit through some, mind you, not a fan of that show. Blech.I'm tempted to make a crack about understanding the break-up better, Michael, but I know that divorce is too painful and complex for me to go there. ...Oops, I just did! It's great to have posters making elaborate arguments for an alternate winner at this late a date, but I'm afraid Parvati's a lock. Relynn, the first ep is the key. Resurrecting Tina or Danni is statistically a non-starter. I'm convinced of Parvati's win because her edit has built the answer to her original plan to both be a flirt, play a better game, and most importantly, keep focused on the win. Remember: Fandom is simply a process by which someone builds a fantasy relationship with someone they don't really know. ;-) |

FLF, trust me, I play nice here but I revel in gallows humor and can always use a laugh. I watched Homicide, she watched Walker. Should've been a sign.
She loved happy Disney endings, I liked how Bambi ended. And worst, I like american Idol, she prefers America's Next Top Model. Paula, Randy, even Ryan
over Tyra any day!
Craig, I think you got that I just chide for your attampts at persuasion in relation to Edgic, never personal, and yeah, I'd watch Tyra before the "All Parvati Hour", got me there! :-) Michael |

I like Survivor AND America's Next Top Model AND I watch American Idol. I'm a lost cause when it comes to "scripted TV" except for Medium of
course.
I wonder if Alison can have a dream about who wins S16 for me. Someone send her a link to the LividManda thread... |
