His date was the beginning of his "story", the guy that stood by her blah, blah, blah. Ed's coming back is just part of the story and so scripted. I guess we'll have to wait and see what the tonight's preview caps really say.

Also, I got the feeling that the guy she rejects tells her that the guy she picked is the wrong one. It felt like she was going with Wes, but the guy she rejected finally told her he was the heel. Sort of he leaves her, she leaves him and yet they end up together.
