I'm just wondering exactly how Kate convinced everyone that he is her child. It seemed to me that her mother thought that Aaron was really her grandson.

The world seems to think Aaron is really Kate's, and we can't wrap our heads around how it was never revealed by the Marshall that he was transporting a woman who was 8mths pregnant back to the states. Or how an extremely preggers Kate was able to rescue & coddle 7 other people (although 2 ''died''). And SOP for prisoner transport would (should) include the cuffs in-flight, so Kate performed miracles while handcuffed & waddling around with a 10lb-er in her belly? It's just too weird.

So it doesn't seem like a cop-out to me. To include Aaron and have him be Claire's orphan baby would have seemed like a cop-out to me. But having Kate claiming him as her own adds to his being one of the Oceanic Six.
