CBS Beats Baseball on Thursday

Absent the psychodrama of the Red Sox-Yankees series, FOX's baseball coverage dipped some in the ratings Thursday, allowing CBS to win the night.

CBS averaged a 13.4 rating/21 share in primetime. FOX grabbed second with a solid 11.4/17 (down from Wednesday's enormous 17.6/26 for the Sox-Yankees finale), followed by NBC at 9.3/14. ABC averaged 3.5/5, UPN 3.1/5 and The WB 1.7/3. Because FOX's baseball coverage was carried live, its numbers reflect time period only and will change in final nationals.


Among adults 18-49, CBS led the way with a 7.5 rating. NBC took second in the demographic with a 6.6, beating FOX's 5.9. ABC and UPN tied for fourth at 1.6, while The WB trailed at 1.0.
CBS won the 8 p.m. hour with "Survivor: Vanuatu," 11.1/18. Game 7 of the National League Championship Series posted a 9.7/15 for FOX, causing NBC's "Joey," 7.5/12, and "Will & Grace," 7.3/11, to suffer somewhat. "Extreme Makeover" averaged 4.2/7 for ABC. "WWE Smackdown!" put UPN in fifth, ahead of "Blue Collar TV" and "Drew Carey's Green Screen" on The WB.

"CSI," 16.5/24, kept CBS in the lead at 9 p.m. FOX's coverage of the St. Louis Cardinals-Houston Astros game improved to 11.9/17. "The Apprentice," 9.5/14, was third for NBC. "Smackdown!," 3.2/5, moved up to fourth, beating ABC's "life as we know it." The WB aired a repeat of "Charmed."

At 10 p.m., CBS' "Without a Trace" (12.6/20) and FOX's baseball game (12.5/20) finished in a virtual tie for first, with FOX holding a slight edge in total viewers. "ER," 10.9/17, was a strong third for NBC, while ABC's "Primetime Live" came in at 3.5/5.
