Reality shows don't have that. There are way fewer people on staff, and less people to pay. Reality TV is the smartest thing that a network can produce and televise.

Posts: 2498 (04/07/09 1:11 PM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	For what it's worth, I do remember reading an article post-Micronesia/pre-Gabon about how the cost of 'Survivor' was increasing with the change-over to HD, since the equipment is more expensive and more fragile. But I'd bet that even with that increase, the cost of 'Survivor' is still much cheaper than scripted shows. I remember a few years back thinking how ridiculous it seemed that we have this show where 16 people spend 39 days putting themselves through hell for a million dollar prize, when over on NBC you had all 6 cast members of 'Friends' making that exact same amount PER EPISODE.

I'm sure they have advertising dollars to cut from the pie too, but you've gotta figure with the ratings that season got (wasn't it #1 overall?), CBS probably made at minimum 100 times that. @_@

Slight increase which is good I suppose. Wish it could get back to levels of episode 1/2/5, but the break along with idol killed the momentum. But it did beat everything in numbers for the night, including Harper's Island.

Occasionally I do actually have to do some work instead of just sitting here posting on Sucks all day! :-) The overnights from Zap2It: TV Ratings: 'Harper's Island' shores up CBS Thursday NBC and CBS tied for first in the adult demo Premieres of "Harper's Island," "Parks and Recreation" and "Southland" added a bit of new blood to Thursday's lineup, but ultimately the night belonged to CBS. CBS snagged a 7.8 rating/13 share, drawing in an estimated 12.7 million viewers. Second-place FOX nabbed a 5.1/9 with NBC's 5.0/9 on its heels. ABC finished with a 3.4/6, while The CW had a 1.3/2. In the adult demo, however, it was a draw between CBS and NBC, both doing a 3.3 rating for viewers 18-49. In third, FOX had a 2.9, followed by ABC's 1.3 and The CW's measly 0.7. CBS kicked off the ratings mastery at 8 p.m. with "Survivor: Tocantins," 6.7/12. FOX came in second for the hour with a 5.6/10 for "Bones," while NBC took third averaging a 4.4/8 for "The Office" and premiere of "Parks and Recreation" combined. The comedy duo of "In the Motherhood" and "Samantha Who?" averaged 3.2/6 for the hour, while a "Smallville" repeat trailed on The CW. At 9 p.m., "CSI" kept the ratings ball rolling with a meaty 9.9/16 for CBS. The hour's second place was tied between FOX's "Hell's Kitchen" and NBC's "Office"/"30 Rock" combo, all averaging a 4.5/7. A repeat of "Grey's Anatomy" got a 3.8/6 for ABC, still ahead of the "Supernatural" repeat on The CW. Finally, CBS' ratings hat trick finished with a 6.7/12 for the debut of the murder mystery "Harper's Island" in the 10 o'clock hour. It bested NBC's premiere of "Southland," 6.2/11 (although NBC did better in the adult demo this hour). ABC's "Private Practice" rerun was last with a 3.2/6. Survivor is #9 overall, and the #2 show on CBS (behind Two and a Half Men). It ain't going anywhere.

In other words, the eight-minute overrun last week was worth about $1.867 million. That's down from the $745,000 per 30 seconds Fox earned for season six. In second place and way behind in terms of revenue is Dancing with the Stars; its results show draws $205,000 for a 30-second commercial, which lands it in sixth place out of the top 15 most-expensive shows, while the actual performance episode only gets $196,000 per 30-second ad, making it 7th and drawing a total of $4.8 million an hour. No we know why there's an hour of nonsense filler: it pays the bills, making $5 million an hour. One of the two other reality shows to make the top 15 list was Survivor Gabon, which made $4.2 million an hour for CBS last fall, bringing in $204,000 for a 30-second ad. That's the same overall revenue as CSI, but while the drama gets more viewers, its 30-second ads cost less: $201,000. Forbes qualifies these numbers by calling them "estimates" and says that "[t]he amount individual buyers have actually handed over for these spots vary, depending on such things as the advertisers' perceptions about the value of a show, the timing and size of their purchases and their clout with the respective network." In addition, Forbes reports that "as much as 80% of these purchases are made ahead of the actual TV season" so "many of the purchasing decisions rely on anticipation, expectation and past results rather than actual in-season performance." Finally, there was Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which makes $4 million an hour and costs advertisers $169,000 per 30-second spot. No word how much extra it brings in from all the Sears whoring.

Survivor is 3rd in ad revenue for all of CBS shows after CSI and Two and a Half Men. Considering the fact that an hour of Survivor costs less than half than an hour of CSI or Two and a Half Men, I'd guess that Survivor is probably the most profitable show CBS has.
