Monday, May 18, 2009CHA CHING! Carrie Underwood TRIPLES Kelly Clarksons earnings to become the highest paid Idol of 2008!
Forbes magazine have just released their official list of the highest paid American Idol contestants of 2008, with pop-country queen Carrie Underwood taking the top spot with a whopping $14 million.
The season four winner earned the big bank from a combination of record sales, extensive touring, and her endorsement deal with Vitamin Water. Underwoods
2007 album "Carnival Ride" performed strongly throughout 2008, selling almost 3 million copies in the States alone and scoring 5 consecutive
number one singles on the country chart. Her overall record sales now total 9.6 million.
Also on the list at #3 is the original Idol Kelly Clarkson, who earned considerably less with $4.2 million. Clarkson also had an album released in 2007,
the ill-fated "My December", which only yielded one hit single "Never Again" with sales failing to carry through to 2008.
Speaking of "My December", Clarkson recently spoke to MTV in defense of the record, which she feels was misunderstood.
"My December was no different than any other record," she said. "And if people actually listen to it, you'd find that it's a very
pop record. It's made no different from any other record. There's 'Never Again,' which is the big pop anthem, and then there's the
ballads like 'Sober.' It's very much my formula for every album."
So there you have it. "My December" was a brilliant pop album and it deserved tons more success than it got, but it's the type of record
that's too hard to market. It's too pop for an indie/rock crowd, yet it's not formulaic & commercial enough for the pop crowd.
Anyways Kelly won't have to worry about her finances now that "All I Ever Wanted" is a certified smash. As huge Kelly fan I try constantly to get into AIEW but it's just such a generic crap that I can't, it honestly sounds exactly like a Pink or Avril Lavigne record, and minus a couple of songs the album is trash. I'm still happy it's been successful though because I'd never want to see anything negative to happen to Kelly, and I'm also happy for Carrie who I happen to be a huge fan of. Carrie is one of the best female vocalists out and I have no idea why her label haven't tried to launch her internationally like they did with bloody Taylor Swift. |
