Rankings don't mean shit. Federer still is the best that's ever lived, and Nadal will never match his success. Jelena is #1 for women and she hasn't even made a final of a grand slam.

Oh yes I'm such a fan-tard. I don't even like them because they are so omg adorable, sweet, or amazing. I like them because they are so ungracious and pissy, it's hilarous to watch a top athlete act like that.

The two Americans are very good players, but they're nowhere near being 'the best ever' as so many of their over-imaginative fan-bots sometimes say. That's laughable, to say the least.

They perform the best when it counts. Yeah they don't play much or win the little tournaments, they have modeling and designing careers to attend to. They only like to win tournaments where the whole world is watching (Wimbledon, Olympics, etc.).

At least they bring out emotion in people to make them feel one way or another, unlike most players who people root for because they AREN'T the williams sisters. "OMG let's hate the Williams sisters because they win and we are pathetic low lifes who never won a single thing in life!"

*L* You're not hearin'. The reason why many who despise them do so is oftentimes solely because of their piss-poor attutudes which you so like.

Undies has had her hand in women's tennis a bit, in the past, and actually interacted with them to a degree - go back in the thread here, if you'd like, and check out her comments on them. Her first-hand experience with them left a less-than-favorable impression.

I'm not so sure about Nadal not reaching Fed's level of success. Rafa's got 5 GS titles, now. At the rate he's going, he could very easily have around 10 a few short years from now. I think he's definitely got the potential to be as great as Fed, if not even greater... but there's the HUGE question of burnout - will he get it? Time will tell. He's also been very, very lucky to have not sustained an injury which sidelined him.

Regardless of how it all turns out, I'm really looking forward to watching his play over the next number of years.

The same goes for Djoko, I hope.

Jelena won't be #1 any longer in a few hours from now, either! *L* She'll have a ton of points drop off from a match from last year, so Ana's gonna rise to the #1 spot, again. It's getting pretty logjammed at the top of the Women's tour; the results from the Open have the potential to really shake those topmost rankings around a bit.

Man, I've got to give a shout-out to Juan Martin del Potro. Have any of you seen what he's been DOING of late?

Going by the rankings date of tomorrow... he was ranked 65th six weeks ago.

He then won his first ATP tournament ever, at Stuttgart (def. Gasquet in the final), which moved him to 44th in the rankings.

Then, he won his 2nd straight tourney, in Austria (def. Melzer in the final) - and moved to 25th in the rankings, hovering at 25-24 for three weeks.

THEN, he won his 3rd straight tourney, in LA (def. Roddick in the final)... to move to 19th in the rankings.

And NOW... just within the last hour or so... he won his FOURTH CONSECUTIVE tournament, in Washington, DC (def. Troicki in the final) - and has moved up to 17th in the rankings!!!

I think we should start keepin' an eye on this guy, to say the least!!

The US Open starts in ONE WEEK, y'all!!!

ETA: Man, I'm dyin' laughin', here!! This has got to be one of the weirdest scorelines I've ever seen!

ETA2: And now... it is OFFICIAL!! The ATP has this on their introductory splash screen to their website...

I think Nadal will better Roger's successes, and even win another olympic gold in 4 yrs, barring any injury issues.. and I think Steffi Graf was the finest women's player ever.

I'm still thrilled for my gal Dinara! Considering her exhaustion, silver ain't half bad :)

After seeing how Guga and Bjorg faded from a dominant level so quick I would be shocked if Nadal isn't a burnt out shell of himself by the time the 2012 Olympics roll around.

I don't know what will happen with Nadal and I doubt he will ever get the media accolades Fed did as the Greatest Tennis Player Ever. But he had an awesome year for sure and I'm happy for him finally getting the ranking that reflects his brilliant year. And it wasn't simply Fed not doing well (before someone brings up that argument), because Nadal beat Fed even when Fed was playing his best at Wimbledon this year.

That said, I hope Fed does better work from here on out.

Steffi Graf was the finest women's player ever. But it's not like the Williams sisters are terrible and the fact that they are now 10-0 in Olympics doubles is pretty cool. With 2012 being at Wimbledon I expect that unbeaten streak to continue barring injury.

Congrats to Nadal for being the first relevant male player to win single's gold since Agassi in 96.

They'll both be in their 30's by then though, MeMy... which is archaic in tennis-age. I doubt they'll even be on the Tour still at that time.

Agreement with all who see Steffi as being the greatest women's player of them all... although I have to wonder how much "Little Mo" would have done had that accident not occurred to her.

I didn't say they will necessarily be in contention for singles titles then, but if they compete in doubles I still don't see anyone beating them four years from now. I have no idea what their plans are for the tour, but they have said they plan on competing in London.

And anyway... Serena will be 31. Venus will be 32. Yeah that does qualify as their 30s, but I don't see any Americans on the horizon that could unseat them as the women representing America in four years if they want to play. Besides, some women do keep on playing past 30. Chris Evert retired at 35. Hell, Martina Navratilova played doubles til she was almost 50.

That picture of Nadal is just plain bad.

MeMy, I'm saying that if they don't keep playing in the tour, they're not even going to have the opportunity TO compete, in either Singles or Doubles. As the rankings are used to determine who gets invited to participate, they'll have to be one of the top two ranked US Doubles teams in order to even play in 2012. I just don't see that happening.

OK... but as far as I can tell is you are basing your whole idea of them quitting the tour based on the arbitrary ages they will be in four years rather than their actual stated intentions, which is to keep playing at least until 2012. So if you think they are lying or are deluding themselves in thinking they can still play four years from now, that's fine, but I happen to believe they can and will still play four years from now.

Nah, I'm mainly thinking that... well, seeing how much less interested they are in the sport over the past 4 years, I'm expecting that decline in interest to progress even further over the next four years, to the point where I think at least one of them, if not both, will quit entirely. That's the main thing. Then, combine the age factor with that, and it all becomes even more difficult to do.

The bigger question is... will we both still be at this silly-assed board four years from now to be discussing this then?

The biggest event for this thread for the year is nearly HERE! The draws came out today.

(I think that the links for the draws below will dynamically change / move to subsequent rounds - as the tournament progresses.)

Men's Draw
Q1 - Nadal should walk to the Qtrs, perhaps meeting Blake, Nalbandian, or Monfils, there.
Q2 - Perhaps the easiest Qtr; Ferrer - Simon in the top half, and Wawrinka - Murray in the bottom.
Q3 - Potentially vicious; Roddick - Gonzalez in the top half, and Robredo, Safin, Tsonga, and the Djoker in the bottom.
Q4 - Alright, TIPSY fans - he's in the top half, and has a golden opportunity, here!! Almagro, Gasquet, and Davydenko (in that order) are ALL beatable! In the bottom half, Federer's biggest challenge should be Verdasco... if he doesn't make the Qtrs, shame on him.

Women's Draw (remember that Sharapova withdrew a few weeks ago)
The potential Quarterfinal matchups are...
Q1 - Ivanovic vs. Safina. Man, oh MAN! Hantuchova also in this Qtr.
Q2 - Williams vs. Williams.

Szavay and Radwanska are their biggest potential pitfalls.
Q3 - Zvonareva vs. Jankovic. Davenport, Bartoli, and Wozniacki also in this Qtr.
Q4 - Dementieva vs. Kuznetsova. Chakvetadze and Schnyder are also seeded here.

Sharapova withdrew to have time to recover from well-deserved surgery. Her voice-box was adjusted so she can never scream again. It will take away from Maria in the sack, but vastly improve her tennis persona.
