Who knows what the full story is? Did Denise embellish the facts a bit to gain some sympathy? Maybe. Is the school slanting the facts to make themselves look better and save their asses? Certainly possible. Maybe a little of both. A lot of survivors have embellished their bios/backgrounds before, I'm assuming with the blessing of MB to make them seem more compelling. And certainly a lot of contestants have lost jobs because their companies couldn't/wouldn't hold their positions open for them. But unless Denise had some advance warning about potentially getting some extra bucks from MB for pleading her hardship case at the Reunion show, I don't see what she really had to gain by full-out lying.

I think this arbitrary "welfare award" is bullshit, too - I thought the same thing when they cooked up ATC just to give Rupert his million. There have been many Survivors that were really struggling and faced hardships upon returning from the show - why not give them a handout, too? But people are talking in outrage here like Denise is lying about struggling when in reality she's rolling in $$ now because she's been "promoted" to a full-time school janitor from a part-time cafeteria worker. Let's keep things in perspective here. School janitors might get decent benefits from the district, but they certainly don't make much money. Don't know what her husband does for a living, but I'm sure they're still struggling financially, maybe not quite as much as before, but the toll of working nights and not spending time with her kids/family is probably more than Denise bargained for. While it seems she ASKED for the janitorial position, she probably felt like she had no choice because she had to do something to improve her family's situation, and here was a full-time opportunity with better benefits, a little more pay and a chance to remain working for the district - and it doesn't seem like someone like Denise had a lot of alternate career options pre Survivor.
