Of course it is, I was just disagreeing that it is the essense of the show. It is a social experiment, what are you going to do in these conditions(the challenges, the vote, etc). A group could theoretically vote each other out alphabetically or through random draw, and it would be interesting. It would even be interesting to a guy like you because you would see the tribe suffer the consequences of not dropping the dead weight. Without the personalities, the challenges mean nothing. That is why certain seasons like Cook Islands or Micronesia are among the worst, because challenges and convoluted strategy came before the personalities.

Which is more important to you probably determines which seasons you like best. If you like challenges and survival more, then you'd like seasons like Palau, Cook Islands, and Fiji. Most people on this board seem to prefer strong personalities and interesting strategy, which is why those three seasons aren't very well-liked around here, but older seasons like Marquesas, Amazon, and Pearl Islands are. And each season tends to lean either way. That's kind of what keeps the show around for so long, because you never know how each season's cast will react to the environment with which they are presented. Will they be strategically dumb, but personally interesting, like the cast of Gabon? Will they be strategically smart, but kind of dull, like the women of Micronesia? Will there be an alliance or tribe that dominates physically and then walks away with the game, like Koror or Aitu? Or will an alliance of misfits unexpectedly overthrow those who look most likely to win, like Casaya did to La Mina? Or will they suck on all counts, like in Thailand? We've had incredible variety in terms of the types of players who have done well in this game, and also the types of stories that have been told each season. Most of the time we've only had clear-cut "weak tribes" and "strong tribes" when they were the result of schoolyard picks. It's been much more even in the seasons where producers pick the teams.

Besides, even in a variety of professional sports an individual could be great but could be dragged down by a mediocre team. Hell, forget sports, it could be the same way in a company. It's a part of life, so why can't Survivor reflect that? Life's not fair, and Survivor isn't fair by default since the castaways range in age, physical ability, education, and social skills. Some players are at an advantage in some areas and at a disadvantage in others. Deal with it, punk.

Gillian being the only player over 60 this past season affected her much more than it did the other players. Brian from Guatemala being a liberal in a cast that tended to lean more conservative changed his social game more than it did theirs. The numerous water-based challenges in Cook Islands were to Ozzy's benefit. I could go on. Needless to say, Survivor has never been fair, and it shouldn't be.

Also, people have ALWAYS watched reality shows more for personalities than for challenges. That's why the Real World is still going after twenty years, and that's why people watch those crap VH1 "_____ of Love", "I Love _____" shows. It's certainly not for the challenges. I mean, I think most people could give a damn if Hoopz could grip a poll longer than the Entertainer, but watching Megan/Brandi C. and Pumkin/Toastee throw random beverages on one another is what made I Love Money great. The same is true with Survivor, although the audience is more intellectual and generally older and more feminine. As I've stated, the show has 10 minutes of challenges at best, and the other 35 minutes in interaction among the players, so I think it's clear what REALLY matters to the show. Also, Gabon had higher ratings than Micronesia, yet its final 9 were EASILY more pathetic than Jason, James, Ozzy, and Erik from last season, so I guess you're proven wrong about what people want to see.

Who the producers pick to be on the show is just as much a part of the game design as anything else. In fact, it probably affects the outcome of the show more than tribal selection, challenges, location, or twists combined. That's why when there are crappy seasons like Cook Islands and Fiji, the first thing people complain about is the casting. No amount of renovation of the "system" could make the show entertaining if they cast a bunch of mactors with no concept of how to play the game.
