It will not beat Titanic. It'll make $420 or so, and yes, hit the top 5. How it does over the next week should determine whether or not it beats Star Wars.

I will go see it again in IMAX whenever it stops being sold out. I can see why it will continue making money.

At risk of putting myself out there, was this movie really THAT good??? Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed it and it was great, but seriously, I think
movies that get this much hype should be movies that are actually...well...important in some way...influential to a genre, different, distinctive, I guess. I
don't necessarily think this movie brought anything "new" to the genre. It didn't really do anything different. It didn't take any risk.
Personally, of all the comic book movies I've seen, I think X2 and Superman 2 are the best.
This movie is an action flick. One with an actual believable storylines and developed characters yes, but still, at it's core, it's about a man in a bat suit kicking people's asses and a villain that likes to blow up shit. I paid to see an action movie and that's what I got (as well as other good things), but still, I don't think this movie deserves all of the hype and praise it's getting. I thought it was great, but nothing I'd pay to see twice.

No, it won't beat Titanic.
Everyone knows the dvd will be out before Christmas where they can watch it on their Hi-def 42 inch tvs at home. Easily one of the top 5 comic book movies...but that isn't saying much. |

Yeaster wrote: I give it more credit then that, it is a fine film in itself, not just a good film for the superhero genre. I'm glad a movie has got people excited again, but personally The Dark Knight isn't the best film ever. Hell,it isn't tge best superhero movie ever, I still think Ironman was the best the genre has given us. Robert Downy Jr was AMAZING in that movie, hes in a totally different league then even Heath Ledger. |

Yeah, its not gonna beat Titanic. Titanic was a once in a lifetime phenomenom that probably won't be beat until ticket prices are jacked up to $20.
As for the Dark Knight, its a very good movie that is unfortunately being overpraised by fanboys right now. Its #1 ranking on imdb's top 250 is slightly outrageous (and points out the obvious flaws with IMDBs rating system), but it'll likely fall in the weeks to come. |

I saw it and liked it. Won't pay to see it again in the theater though. I don't think it will beat Titanic, which probably had a much broader audience.

i don't know if titanic had a broader audience. i think the chief advantage titanic had was that it was basically a summer blockbuster that got released at
the end of the year, so it had months and months where it didn't really have any high profile competition at the box office and could continue with a
steady $25 to $30 million per week clip. it never had a single blockbuster weekend by modern standards, it just trucked along at a good clip.
i doubt batman will beat it, largely because there is still a lot of competition this summer. i don't know why another studio hasn't tried releasing a big movie in January -- i guess it's a high risk high reward movie -- but i don't think titanic is unbeatable |

I remember someone explaining Titanic's success this way...
there are a lot of girls with disposable income. It may have been the first blockbuster for female teen audiences. It became a huge date film. I never saw it in theaters. I knew beforehand the boak sank. |

I remember Titanic started out slow at the box office. It wasn't until a few weeks later that it started selling out. I mean every show would sell out on the weekends. Craziness, I tell you. Titanic was the movie that got the people who NEVER go to the movies to go to the movies. My grandfather even went to see Titanic. |

Dark Knight was good, I hope it beats titanic on principal alone, I hate Titanic. It is no star wars though. And Star was made money when a ticket was $3 not
F'ing $10

Exactly. SW, Gone with the wind, etc were bigger back in the day. 300million in 10 days is amazing though

It's just where we're at as a country. Next summer there will probably be another film that breaks all the records. Then another. Just get used to it
and don't think of ticketsales as the biggest factor on whether a movie is worth a shit. This one was, and so was Titanic. But Dead Mans Chest? Christ.

I really should bump the 2008 movie thread thingie...
Anybody here going to see the Star Wars Clone Wars cartoon movie? Mummy 3? I'm just trying to think of something that can knock Dark Knight out of number 1? Besides Stepbrothers... |

OK as the last person to see this in OT I just have to chime in and say this movie was OK...
but while I like Maggie Gyllenhaal I think she was horribly miscast in this particular film as I just can't buy a couple of hotties like Christian Bale and Aaron Eckhart being forever haunted by the loss of her. She's neither beautiful or charismatic enough to warrant that IMO. The same goes for eliciting any sort of sorrow that she died as like someone else on this page I was glad she did. I was totally tricked though when I thought Commissioner Gordon died and was really glad he lived because I would have been mad otherwise. I enjoyed seeing Chicago's skyline featured as much as it was, although as someone who has been to the city so many times it definitely took me out of the movie. While Chicago is so crime-ridden the governor threatened to send up the national guard recently, it's still not Gotham City and everything was too bright for me to see it that way. I guess I too much liked Tim Burton's Batman movies and saw them too many times to warm up to this sunny Gotham. And because I'd seen those movies so many times I didn't know what to expect from Heath as I did quite love Jack Nicholson's Joker. I guess this movie showed me I can have room in my heart for both. R.I.P. Heath. p.s. I never saw Titanic in the theater and I was a teenage girl when it came out. |

TDK makes the Burton version look like the shallow mess of a movie that it is.
