[Stocks opened lower Wednesday amid signs of a weakening economy and falling consumer confidence.
On Wednesday, the Dow Jones industrial average was back below the 13,000 level, trading down 115.43 points, or 0.89%, to 12,894.71. The broader S&P 500 index was off 1.01%, or 14.48 points, to 1,425.22. That puts the index up just 0.5% for the year. The Nasdaq Composite was off 1.12%, or 29.09 points, to 2,567.72.
Consumer confidence is now at its lowest level in two years. ]
