I think if the show had another season that they would definitely delve further into this 'life after death' usage of the Dollhouse technology. In order for it to work on that function, a person would have to subject themselves to a series of procedures prior to death.

Interestingly, I also happened to watch the pilot episode of Battlestar Galactica: Caprica, which also deals with that issue, except there, the after-death personality is formed not from scans of an existing brain, but from second-hand sources, the informational detritus scattered throughout universe from a person's every day life.

The potential scope of this show is just now becoming apparent in these last couple episodes. It really does have the potential to become more than just a sci-fi procedural.

What I find kinda odd is that we really haven't seen much of Amy Acker's character overall, and we're near the end.

You know, it's really weird, but this is the THIRD story in the span of two weeks I've read/watched that explores "life after death" by downloading someone's brain into another body.

A few weeks ago I read "THE ADORATION OF JENNA FOX" by Mary E Pearson which is about a girl who wakes up with amnesia and slowly discovers she nearly died in a car accident and 10% of her brain was salvaged and downloaded into a new body. Does that mean she only has 10% of her soul? She's more human than machine though, and this story was more about HER adjusting than the world adjusting to her.

And then this week I've been listening to SKINNED by Robin Wasserman, which goes a little further than Jenna Fox and goes into a broader scope with society's reaction. The girl actually does die after a car accident, but her brain is scanned and she's put into a robot body that doesn't have any human feelings. Instead of sleeping, she shuts down, stuff like that. Is she alive even if she can think? Or is she a machine made to believe it can think? And she can't ever die because she'd just be downloaded into a new body because of the contract her parents signed.

(There's also a third book that deals with this subject so I've heared--UNWIND by Neal Shusterman, haven't read it though.)

Anyway, so when I watched Dollhouse, it was a little weird, like I was experiencing Deja Vous because I hadn't actually planned on reading these things so close together, it just happened that way. So I found the premise of Friday's episode to be a little too familiar. Sure there was the mystery, but it was a very weak mystery--the killer and motivation were obvious early into the episode and some other things felt forced to give the viewer red herrings. Also, I didn't think there was enough closure. I would have liked Margaret to embrace Jocelyn's photography somehow a bit more (or did they do it at all? I can't remember).

OH! And then even more randomly, I went to see 17 Again on Saturday and in that movie it ends with a letter being read by the person in the wrong body to prove they are the right body person, just like the letter Margaret wrote to implicate her son.

So I didn't particularly like this episode only because this premise has somehow bombarded me and I felt it was overdone instead of something fresh and new. I prefer episodes that don't feel so stand-alone like this one did.

I did, however, really enjoy the Topher part of this episode.
