I'm coming out of lurkville to give a nod to this show. And to show some luv for AaronSanchez. Ay Dios Mio...that boy is caliente!!!! I like really like
the set up of this show, I just wish we would get a little more feedback from the judges while they're tasting the food. But other than that.....I like
this show alot.

Coming in late on this one - can only post on Yuku from work
Wasn't Traci des Jardins on a few of FN's challenge shows making cakes, sugar sculptures and the like? So how come she couldn't come up with a decent dessert? I was under the original impression that she was a pastry chef. 2 Legit |

to quote the guy who reviews the shows on the food network site"
Two words: salmon roe. She made a "dessert" (though that term is dubious here) with beets, crème fraiche and salmon roe and the judges just weren't having it. |

I watched this show for the first time last night. How is it that Sanchez didn't know to have his plates ready in 30 minutes? Was last night's
challenge different than other episodes? Camaraderie is a wonderful thing, and they've got it. It makes a show much more enjoyable to watch than constant
bickering and sniping that I expected.
Gavin Kaysen is good looking. I feel I've seen him before though. Not all all surprised to see Jill Davie eliminated. |

Alton Brown is as annoying as that Ty Pennington..now I duck and run I'm a fan of Alton, and while I don't think he's anywhere near as bad as Ty, I'd agree that this series (either version of it) is the one show of his that I dislike. For whatever reason his commentary just doesn't work for me. |

Alton desperately needs a color man. He's great, but it's just so monotone.

Alton desperately needs a color man. He's great, but it's just so monotone. I think he's just trying too hard. He's lost that comfortable presence on the camera that makes Good Eats and that show where he goes on the road so fun to watch. And, on a different topic, John Besh annoys me. I can't wait to see him go. At this point I can see how the spoiler might well be true. This show is still not as a good as Top Chef (though the lack of pettiness over technique is refreshing. No complaints about using sous vide here!) |

I like this a lot better than Top Chef. No pissy attitudes, no excuses, just put out amazing food. I like Alton here. He takes charge and is in your face as
an active part of the show, unlike Top chef, where you don't see the host until she robitically says "take your knives......(wait for it)...and
go." Is he a little "too serious" or going over the top, yeah, sure, but that's Alton, and that's Iron Chef. You just have to accept
that the "gourmet academy" really exists and that the "chairman" isn't really an actor playing the role of the nephew of another actor
playing the role of a rich eccentric gastronome.
No real crazy egos here, just people doing what they do, and respecting everybody else's point of view. Everybody knows who they are and what they like to do, and they all have crazy skills. I really like that nobody bitches and whines about the challenges or what they have to cook with. If they did last night's challenge on Top Chef, they'd spend the whole hour whining about not having what they need for their art, or complaining about how they didn't have the right equipment, and they'd be all uptight at each other about the ingredients they chose for them to work with and they'd hold grudges about it and fight about it. They all laughed it off and had a good time doing their best with what they had to work with. "oh maaaan he got me! - ok let's cook!" Nobody is anybody's enemy. I like that a lot. The people on HK and TC should just lighten up - it's just cooking. I don't really like the judges that much. A little to hoidy toidy for me. They're a little pissy. I wish they would have got the judges from Iron Chef America especially the white haired guy |

I'm really enjoying this show for the comraderie between chefs and in seeing true professionals be thrown into situations that are totally outside their
comfort zone. I agree that Alton doesn't seem to have the best hosting chops. He stammered through the judges table on this last challenge. I do like
him on his other shows, however...and enjoy his color commentary on the real ICA shows.
If you're interested, hop over to Michael Ruhlman's blog for a behind the scenes take on this show. Ruhlman is the judge with blondish long hair. Anthony Bourdain posts there as well...and gives his take on NICA vs. Top Chef. Andrew Knowlton is the judge with long dark hair - a bit of a tool in real life as well as on the show. www.ruhlman.com Here's an interesting tidbit Ruhlman mentioned about Gavin Kaysen's salt issue: Alton said to Sanchez, who'd just squeaked by: "If Chef kaysen had salted his quail eggs and frog legs properly he would be standing here." Well, Kaysen DID salt his food. What he didn't tell us, indeed what he only told me later that day as all were packing to go and he was heading to the airport, was this. The way the competition works is the chefs cook their food under those strict time constraints you see on the show. Food is then photographed and held. Camera's are reset, and the chefs get to reheat and put their dishes together for tasting. This is the only way that each chef can be able to serve hot fresh food as he or she wishes to the judges, not food that's been sitting around for a while, no unfair advantage given to someone who serves first. That day was very hot and Kaysen stored his food in a tub on plenty of ice. It was then stored by the culinary crew. When Kaysen returned to his food, he found it submerged in ice water! That's something that I would have taken into account in the judging. Salt quickly rushes out into water-he could have reseasoned the exterior but no wonder, it tasted under-seasoned. Such is the nature of culinary competition. But I'm sorry he didn't say anything. |

I watch a lot of the Food Network shows and always amazed at the amount of salt and butter used by the cooks
I never salt anything..it's bad for your blood pressure and butter is bad for the arteries I'd like one chef utilize other means to season |

Know What? I think the spoiler IS a spoiler, but only to who goes F2 or F3. I think it spoils what one of the final challenges will be.

Is it just me, or do those judges on AMERICA'S NEXT IRON CHEF need to have the shit slapped out of them?
Collectively, all three come across as the most pretentious assholes to judge a competitive reality show. They are FOOD SNOBS, and I HATE FOOD SNOBS. Alton Brown must have the patience of a saint. If I were in his shoes, I'd tell the judges to suck it. |

I never salt anything..it's bad for your blood pressure and butter is bad for the arteries Like everything else, salt is fine in moderation--and the ability to season using salt is one of the most basic skills in cooking. While you can season food in plenty of other ways, salt has the unique quality of enhancing ingredients to make them taste more like themselves. Chocolate desserts almost always call for salt for that very reason. Proper seasoning is so essential that if a chef can't season their food properly it throws into question the rest of their skills. |
