I know it's been said already, but The Stand and It were my favorites. I didn't like Cell. Loved the Shining as a book, and hated the movie. Most of
the movies that have been made from his books are crappy and don't do the book justice.

I didn't read this thread but I just thought this was a good place to point out that contrary to popular belief The Stand is not one of the great American
novels.

I couldn't finish Cell. His short story collections are ok. I find his novels tedious though.

Cell was great and brought me back to the old days of the Stand and Salem's Lot

The Mist is a bunch of giant bugs in some fog and people trapped in a supermarket. They don't know if it's just in their area or world wide.
I won't see the movie because the army wasn't in the actual story which tells me it will be a bunch of contrived bullshit on top of an entertaining little story. |

Lessee..giant bugs in the Mist or ghost pirates in the Fog.
I ain't afraid of no ghosts. I'll take the fog. |

I want to see The Mist, but agree that it is bound to suck a bit.

The Stand (unabridged)
Insomnia Eye of the Dragon Bag of Bones The Green Mile I wasn't really crazy over The Body and Rita Heyworth (the novellas) but I really enjoyed when they were turned into movies. |

I just read The Stand last week because I'd heard such good things about it. The only other Stephen King book I ever tried to read was Insomnia and I had
to give up a couple hundred pages in on that one. I really loved The Stand but now I don't know if the one I read was abridged or not. What's the
difference? What parts are missing?

I like his short stories better than his novels.
Everything's Eventual is a good collection. I think he has another short story collection coming out next year. I haven't really enjoyed any of his novels since The Green Mile. |

The stand was good. Robert Mc Cammon wrote a very similar book which I thought was just as good if not better. It was called swan song
The Gunslinger books were Kings best. |

Laura, the unabridged one is over a thousand pages.
I'm still holding out on The Dark Tower. I'll start when he finishes the last book. And I wish he'd continue with the online The Plant (very Little Shop of Horror-ish) collection. That was pretty good.. sucks that he stopped after 6 installments. |

aaahhhh okay... should I buy all of them as a set? (I hate having many different inconsistent book covers)

Yes, he did. Unfortunately he didn't do a very good job of it.

shrew laura, did the one you read have a character named 'the kid' that drove trashcan man in a very distinctive car and a largish section devoted to
their trip? if so, then it was the unabridged version.

Yeah, you should. The ending was, well not so good. He wrote a foreward that said he did it on his own terms and he knew he's get pissed fans, but I had to
read it. I loved that set

re: the dark tower series: was there any ending that would have both satisfied fans and wrapped everything up in a nice little package? the ending did
frustrate me but i think that was his point. much better than thomas harris's obvious 'fuck you' to the fans.

I guess everyone wanted the happy little ending, but I like that he did what felt best.
