They moved the NFL Network to a different package so now we have to spend an extra $7.00 a month on top of the over $100.00 we already spend. Plus we have two DV-Rs which used to cost $10.00 a month each, but we just got a letter from the cable company that they are going up to $13.00 a month each. My husband is fed up with the cable company and wants to switch to DirectTV. I'm hating the idea of a dish on the house (and based on where the neighbors' dishes are, it's going to have to be in the front), but I'm loving the NFL On Demand package. My favorite thing about Comcast is the DV-R option as well as the information when you change channels. Does DirectTV have both those things? Anyone who has DirectTV, is it worth it? Are you happy?

Also, cable started copying directv with the guide and display options. we've had it for 10 years and i have no desire to go back to cable.

You start adding stuff, and it is way more than Cable. Plus satellite signal sucks the balls. I was told it was less than cable. Of course we wouldn't change if it is going to cost more. I like Comcast, but it's pissing me off that they keep raising the prices and changing the packages. If I can get all the things I like about Comcast for less money with DirectTV, plus the NFL package, then I'll totally do it.

I don't know if you can get it with only one turner. Ours has two.

Our cable is WAY cheaper than Direct TV but we have Cox, so I don't know what Comcast's prices are like. But look at the channel packages with Direct TV. You have to buy 3 before you get all the channels that cable offers (Bravo and MSNBC stick out in my head -- I don't know what you watch a lot) and while Direct TV's basic channel packages are cheaper, you definitely do not get all the good stuff unless you pay 100/month. We have Cox local telephone, High Speed Internet, and two HD/DVR boxes of extended basic cable (100 channels or so) for 120/month. Their customer service pisses me the fuck off regularly, but it's worth it because the Direct TV signal around her SUCKS. My inlaws have it and 90% of the time, their HD channels don't catch at all. Not to mention the snow on half the channels every time it rains.

Technology fails. Cable and satellite both have problems from time to time. Customer service can stink with ANY huge corporation. Costs are generally comparable. Pricing schemes are DESIGNED to be confusing. Some people hate Comcast. I take it that certain regions have terrible service from Comcast, most notably customer care. I, however, have had nothing but stellar service from Comcast. Cable rarely goes down, and when it does, it is usually five minutes at 4 AM. I can live with that. ALL DVRs are subject to errors. It's just the nature of the delicate equipment. I have no idea how dishes handle a DVR issue, but when I've had a few minor quibbles with my Comcast DVR, generally... if I can't fix it by resetting the box myself, I just call Comcast, they send a signal, and the box works fine after that. Probably if you use cable for your net access, a combo package will save you a few bucks, but also probably not enough to go out to dinner with, unless you don't mind Taco Bell.

Because they make you buy the receivers we'd be out $300.00 right off the top. Plus the monthly fee looks about the same.

My exwife has a dish, and when I was over there hooking up her DVD player and it was raining out a little and she lost her signal.

"Searching for satellite signal" is a pain in the ass. It always seemed that a storm would hit just when my favorite program was coming on. My cable never goes out, I love all the on demand features and the dvr. It is too expensive though.

They have dish service for my apartment building and the channel I seem to watch most often is "searching for satellite signal" like raa says. It's sometimes entertaining. My favorite moment lately was when Keith Olbermann was discussing the guy's theory that there's a 20% chance that all this is inside someone's video game when the signal went out and the picture froze.
