Regarding the F3,
As a Survivor Liberal, the incessant complaining of twists (which started about Season 3) and pre-season negativity grates, so I'm gonna go ahead and be the asshole and say: GET OVER IT |

So far the Final 3 has tended to result in a better outcome than the Final 2 would have. Suppose the last 2 seasons would have had Final 2 instead of Final 3.
Assuming that Ozzy thinks logically and takes Becky over Yul (Yul would definitely take her), the Cook Islands jury would be deciding between Becky the
coattail rider and either Ozzy or Yul (snore). Cassandra would have been the most likely winner of Survivor Fiji because Dreamz has the best chance of winning
the Final 2 IC and he would take Cassandra over Earl. A Dreamz/Cassandra Final 2 would have been a disaster.
If some of the earlier seasons would have had a Final 3, in many cases the viewers would either have gotten the winner that they wanted or there would be no change. Borneo - The Final 4 TC would have played out the same way (2 pairs) and Rudy would have won Australia - Still plays out the same. Elizabeth was too likeable. Africa - Big Tom would still be voted out at Final 4 because he was too likeable. Marquesas - Given the circumstances, Final 4 TC would play out the same way and Kathy would have won. Amazon - Butch would still be voted out at Final 4 as Rob C, drags his two goats to the Final 3. This Final TC would be quite interesting. I think that Jenna would still have won. Matt has Butch and Roger's votes. Jenna has Alex, Heidi and probably Dave's votes. Rob C. has Deena's vote. Christy would vote for either Jenna or Rob C. since she didn't vote for Matt in the actual season. I'm not interested enough in speculating about the other seasons. The bottom line is that the Final 3 tends to result in a more satisfying winner even if it does compromise the original concept somewhat. |

The final three might actually be interesting this season as it's actually being used purely for game flavoring, as opposed to being necessary to shoe-horn
in way too many people into the same number of episodes. I wonder if we'll actually get an extra long final TC that bothers to focus on all three
finalists this time? It needs to go soon though, as the "just kill off anyone of value one spot earlier" factor will kick in with the new players
sooner or later, and then their bandaid will have made the endgame even worse.

A Dreamz/Cassandra Final 2 would have been a disaster. The final 3 resulted in a better outcome in one season, Cook Islands. I don't think anyone can deny that. As much as I complain about Cook Islands, if there's one thing great about it, it was the fact that for the first time since way back in season 2, the "final 2" was two tremendous competitors who deserved to be there, and it resulted in the first close finish since All Stars. If we had a normal F2, then it would be either Ozzy or Yul blowing out Becky by likely a huge margin. Thats why I defended the F3 twist like crazy after Cook Islands originally aired. Unfortunately as time went by and we got it for Fiji as well, my opinions changed on the matter. The problem is that the final 3 doesn't automatically solve the "Best person finishes third" issue. Oh, it possibly does when the F3 is a surprise. But its no longer a surprise. What will happen is we'll see the best player finish fourth. Which incidently happened in just the second season of of the F3! Instead of seeing one great player and one goat in the F2, we'll see one great player and two goats in the F3. Which incidently, happened in just the second season of the F3! Amazing, isn't it? It worked great for one season, then went right back to usual. Shows that it is not a great idea at all, but a lousy one which robs us of an episode and a post-merge TC. And I don't really buy the "F3 would have made previous seasons better" argument because you have no idea how different the dynamics would have been if the players went in knowing three would face the jury instead of two. You think if there was a final 3 in Borneo that Sue and Kelly would have voted for Rich like they had? They more likely would have voted for Rudy, under the assumption that he'd be more likely to amass jury votes than Rich. I've said it before, I'll say it again, if there's a big problem with the final immunity challenge deciding the winner, remove the immunity challenge. Make it so there's no immunity at all at F3. One person goes home 2-1, and the 2 remaining face the jury. Solves the problem. Of course disregarding all of that, the biggest problem with the F3 by far is the pre-merge jury. Having 3 pre-merge jury members is absurdity. If they're gonna keep this up they they gotta merge early at twelve. A twist that I would openly welcome. I'd love to see an early merge for once. Or even a season where there are no tribes at all. See Ravu, we don't hate all twists, we just hate the crappy ones! Or atleast those of us who think logically. There are obviously certain people who shall go nameless *cough* CSC *cough* fsmdud *cough* that will complain excessively no matter what and will proclaim every new season the worst season ever before it begins. And finally, for those of you shouting out at people to get over people complaining about a poor twist that has effected the game in a detrimental manner, get over it!

She'd have to get all of them though, and who knows what would have happened. |

It worked great for one season, then went right back to usualI was under the impression that the Fiji cast did not know that there was a Final 3 instead of a Final 2. Cook Islands was still airing in the US when Fiji was filmed. Even if they did know about it, who's to say that Earl wouldn't have voted against Yau-man . If Earl votes for Dreamz they go to the fire making tiebreaker which Yau would probably win. In any case, Earl might still have voted for Yau since he knew that Yau must be eliminated at some point in order for Earl to win. You think if there was a final 3 in Borneo that Sue and Kelly would have voted for Rich like they had?Yes. The players were incredibly naive back then. Sue/Kelly voted for Rich over Rudy simply because Rich was arrogant and cocky not because they perceived that to be a better game move. Even if there had been a Final 3 rather than a Final 2 they would still vote the same way. How people vote is very often influenced by emotions especially in the earlier seasons.

RavuRules wrote: All twists are not good. Explain to me why the F3 makes for a more entertaining or interesting season, and you'll have a point. But we don't bitch and moan about every twist (well, some do, and there will always be someone who hates a particular twist and voices their opinion on it, so it can seem that way), but a lot of us dislike the F3 because once the surprise is taken out, it really doesn't help the game and robs it of a particular aspect that has always made the game rather interesting. So far the Final 3 has tended to result in a better outcome than the Final 2 would have. The F3 worked in CI, yes (though if Becky had beat Ozzy in that jury vote, she wouldn't have gotten a much better edit and it might have been an interesting season regardless). It helped that it came as a surprise to them. It almost worked in Fiji, but thanks to some bold gameplay from the lesser players, it ended up failing miserably, giving us the first unanimous jury vote of all time (with less suspense then we've ever seen in any F2 situation). So as a surprise element, it worked one out of the two times it was employed. But the surprise is gone now. The cast knows and expects a F3, and that simply means gameplay will shift to having two goats and the strong players getting booted one or two TC's early, just like what happened in Fij. It's a dead twist. It doesn't improve the game. And that's why it sucks. Borneo - The Final 4 TC would have played out the same way (2 pairs) and Rudy would have wonNo. Kelly/Sue would have targeted Rudy, and Rich probably would have turned on his pal to have some shot at winning in the F3. Marquesas - Given the circumstances, Final 4 TC would play out the same way and Kathy would have won.Actually, Vecepia probably would have refused Kathy's deal and booted her at F4, leading to someone like Paschal winning. I'm not interested enough in speculating about the other seasons. The bottom line is that the Final 3 tends to result in a more satisfying winner even if it does compromise the original concept somewhat.Of the six seasons you listed, the F3 would have made the game more interesting in none of them. Rich would still have won Borneo, but we wouldn't have had Sue's "Rats and Snakes" speech. Tina would still have won Australia, but we wouldn't have had Colby's amazing move of booting Keith at F3. Ethan still would have won Africa, but we'd be missing the Kim's amazing immunity streak and her almost as amazing decision to cut Lex at F3. Marquesas would have had just as poor of a winner (even more poor, in fact, since Vecepia's gameplay was stronger than Paschal's), but we wouldn't have had the infamous boob slippage moment from Kathy that cost her the game. Amazon would have played out the same way, except the big schemer would have lost in a less dramatic fashion, and the "student overtaking the teacher" storyline wouldn't have transpired. Point is, the F3 IC and vote has added an interesting and dramatic dynamic to the game for quite some time. The F3 only worked in certain, rare situations as a surprise twist (situations with an immunity hog, a strong player, and two goats, where the strong player is not booted at F4, and even then, it just gives us a face-off between the physical player and the strategic player) - it doesn't work at all as a known twist. I wonder if we'll actually get an extra long final TC that bothers to focus on all three finalists this time?Well, I doubt we'll have a F5 finale, which is certainly a good thing, because the episode count just doesn't provide for that. Even a F4 finale gives us a recap and one extra episode somewhere where nobody goes home. Of course disregarding all of that, the biggest problem with the F3 by far is the pre-merge jury.Fortunately, I doubt we'll have that with a 16-player cast, which is a very good thing, indeed. Granted, now that I've said that, the jury's going to start two boots into the game. Why the hell would Jonathan vote for Becky?? Or Candice for that matter??Jonathan hated Ozzy (and he says now that he doesn't know how he would have voted, but that's after Ozzy's golden edit and Becky's terrible one, after all). Candice had an alliance/friendship with Becky, and nothing like that with Ozzy. I was under the impression that the Fiji cast did not know that there was a Final 3 instead of a Final 2.They didn't (at least, not until the F4). The thing is, instead of being idiots like the cast of CI was, the players booted Yau Man, which robbed us of the CI-level jury vote. Like I said, the F3 only works as a surprise with a stupid cast that lets it work. And as a known variable, it doesn't work at all. Sue/Kelly voted for Rich over Rudy simply because Rich was arrogant and cocky not because they perceived that to be a better game move.No. They voted for Rich because he was a stronger threat in the F3 IC, and they planned to go to the F2 together. They were naive, but they did have game reasons for the things they did, even if their reasons sucked. |

Regarding the F3, I'm not complaining about most twists. I don't like all of them but I know that they're sometimes necessary (although I think they've gone overboard the last two seasons). But the final three I still think is terrible. Would I have liked to see Rudy, Kathy, etc. win? Absolutely. But it's not worth changing the entire format to do it. Assuming that Ozzy thinks logically and takes Becky over Yul (Yul would definitely take her), the Cook Islands jury would be deciding between Becky the coattail rider and either Ozzy or Yul (snore). See, I don't really think a predictable finish is as bad as F3 supporters make it out to be. I don't think anyone was surprised when Tom won over Katie, but it was a great final TC--watching everybody bash Katie for coasting so much made for great TV. On the flip side, sure, I didn't know for sure who would triumph between Yul and Ozzy, but I also can't remember a single question asked by the jury that night--they all were breezed over so quickly. I'll concede that it likely won't be as bad this season if the jury is seven members instead of nine. But besides one or two "Why should I vote for you over these two dominators?" Becky was completely ignored. I'm not denying that an Ozzy/Yul F2 was unlikely and would have been pretty cool, but Yul or Ozzy vs. Becky would have been more fun to watch than people think. Sure, we would all know which way the vote was going, but the jury would be calling Becky out for flying under the radar and riding coattails. Besides, as CR and PT pointed out, it's not necessarily a given that Ozzy would beat Becky. It's the difference of 30 seconds of suspense as the votes are being read or 10-15 minutes of watching an entertaining final TC. (And at the risk of sounding cynical, we didn't get either in Fiji--although admittedly Boo's question was pretty entertaining.) Ok, a Cassandra/Dreamz F2 would've sucked. But hey, the fan favorites almost always get out in fourth place in TAR but that's just the way it goes--they're not letting them race in the final leg too. Besides, nobody really wanted Earl to win, everyone was rooting for Yau-man...and he just got out in fourth place (a tradition that will likely continue). I almost always agree with you Quid...and it's no different this time. Nice post! Another idea: rather than just dropping the final challenge (I don't know that the editors want to lose an entire segment of the finale--although maybe it would convince them to bring back confessionals from the jury members), make it purely endurance again. No difficult balancing, no arm strength, no water, no standing on a platform half the size of a postcard...put everyone on equal footing so to speak. At least that way it's all about who wants it most, not who happens to have (or not have) a Y chromosome or the most muscle. Exactly. It's already backfired once when the players didn't know about it, so it's going to be even worse when they do. Whatever happened to twists being in one season and one season only? Or at least getting rid of the twists that didn't work too well? Imagine if they never dropped any twists--each season would start off with 16 tribes, divided by gender, race, and age; there would be a pick'em/tribal switch sometime early on; right before the late merge at the final eight, the players already voted out would have a chance to rejoin the game... |

Make the other challenges as biased or as random as you want - mix them up, give certain types of competitiors various advantages, keep the players on their toes so they don't ever know who the real challenge threat will be (much like in BB). But in that final IC, all things need to be equal. Don't favor a body type or a certain type of intellect. Make it about raw will power and pure determination to win the game. At least that way, the "great" third place finishers have no good excuse for being sent packing at F3 - they lost their concentration and their drive to win. But when they go out because they're not the best balancer in the game, well, that's just silly. |

I actually prefer a Final 2 to the Final 3 but I can see why they changed it. Starting with Vanuatu, either the winner of the Final IC selected a goat to sit
next to or Aras came to an understanding with Danielle and jumped off knowing that he could win the jury vote. I'm sure that Burnett was getting tired of
this trend and I know that he hates when contestants quit challenges. What I would like to see would be for the jury to vote out the third place finisher
(like in Pirate Master) in the next to last TC and then have the final TC with two contestants as before. Then Final 3 also allows for the possibility of a
tie which sucks.

What I would like to see would be for the jury to vote out the third place finisher (like in Pirate Master) in the next to last TC and then have the final TC with two contestants as before. What? No way. It is the worst and most unfair twist I've seen in a reality show. You want to see the best player (Jay, for example) taken out by the jury? Once you are out of the game, you are out, and that's that. Pearl Islands was the only Survivor season to tamper with that rule. Having the jury vote out anyone at any point in the game, aside from the final TC, would ruin the game beyond what has already been done. |

*as one who has yet to watch the Pirate Master finale, cries over the unmarked Pirate Master spoilers*
Other than that, great points everyone! And thinking about things in a little more detail, I should probably amend or remove the comment I made about the F3 working when its a surprise. If I remember correctly, the F3 being there is what got Dreamz to decide to backstab Yao man and keep the immunity necklace. So it being a surprise didn't really help it make a good ending in Fiji. While Earl was a great player and certainly deserved it, the final outcome was the most anti-climatic and obvious in all 14 seasons. So much for a F3 twist that was supposed to make the final outcome a little less obvious. Even if the F3 is a surprise to the players, they'll still likely boot the best player at the F4, unless that player is holding immunity. |

Jeff P3 wrote:I certainly agree with you in regard to the ghost pirates voting out Jay in Pirate Master. I thought that was totally inappropriate. But in regard to Survivor, now that the jury selecting the winner from the Final 3 is here to stay, the jury voting out the third place finisher in a separate TC held before the Final TC with a Final 2 is an improvement. It eliminates the wretched possibility that the Final TC results in a tie and it would return the Final TC to the debate-like format which plays out on TV a lot better than the Final TC with the Final 3. Whether the jury chooses from the Final 3 or votes out the third place finisher and chooses the winner from the Final 2, they still are essentially voting out two players.
