Posts: 1497 (07/23/08 9:02 AM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Timmy, it jogged right around the YP around 1 AM Monday morning, yes, but she was only a tropical storm at that time, with max. sustained winds at around 50 MPH. 10 AM update, JUST out - She's a Cat 2, now - the wind speed range for the Cat 2 level is 96-110 MPH sustained winds. Cat 3 is 111-130 MPH sustained. She was at 95 MPH at the 8AM update, and is now at around 100 MPH. She's about 30 miles from making landfall near Brownsville, in the next 3-4 hours. Here's are some webcam still images from South Padre Island; you can keep reloading the page to update them, but expect to possibly see 'image', or broken links, instead of a refreshed picture, with at least moderate frequency. There are apparently tons of folks who are wanting to see the storm as it moves in, and the server's getting overloaded... or, quite likely in the next couple of hours, the cameras might happen to be blown down entirely! (7:43 AM's the time of the last image that seems to have been captured from this cam.)

He went their with a church group. They decided not to leave and are holed up at the hotel, not that I'm really worried.

I work with the City here and was hanging out at one of the shelters even though technically I'm not on call like some of the others are. But they shut it down so I'm back home now. Satellite TV is still working for now as is my Internet access. It's supposed to get worse though. I'm hoping to avoid flooding and any wind damage. I'm also worried about my roof and carport. The local news stations seem to be showing a lot of that kind of damage.

Posted by: JeffMasters, 9:16 PM EDT on August 17, 2008 One possible landfall location for Fay is at Tampa Bay. This is of major concern, because over 3 million people live the region, and it is highly vulnerable to storm surge-- particularly for a storm moving northeast or north-northeast at landfall, as Fay is likely to be moving. This vulnerability results from the long stretch of shallow Continental Shelf waters offshore, which allow large surges to pile up. A surge in deeper water can be dispersed down and out away from the hurricane. However, once that surge reaches a shallow, gently sloping shelf, it can no longer be dispersed away from the hurricane. Consequently, water piles up as it is driven ashore by the wind stresses of the hurricane. Even a Category 1 hurricane can create significant surges--up to 7' in Hillsborough County, 6' in Manatee County, 7' in Pinellas County, and 9' in Pasco County.
