I realized today that my sister will never remember a time before 09/11/01. She was seven when it happened, she is nine now, and she probably will forget how it was once, before the news every day told us what color alert we're currently following, before you had to take off your shoes at the airport, and before the New York skyline had the horrible, gaping hole in it that is there today and that still shakes me whenever I see it.
It made me wonder what the future holds for the new generation. My chemistry teacher just had a baby. That child wasn't even BORN in the pre-9/11 world. What will childhood be like for the new generation when we no longer have the choice to live life care-free? When every child has to be afraid of being killed any second by random terrorist action? What does that bode for the future, when childhood is spent in fear?
Remember the children. If you have kids, make sure you take the time to let them know that despite what's happened, their life will go on. It won't be like it was before; that is impossible. But, even in this post-attack America, there is room for joy, for a life full of happiness. We are in a changed world now, but we cannot let the new generation of Americans be deprived of the sort of existence we had when we were their age.
And so, as we remember the people lost to us on September 11th, 2001, we must look to the future. We must learn how to live in this new age without falling to fear. We are more than capable. We are a nation of strong people, and even such horrible tragedy cannot keep us down forever.
God Bless America.
JtV, if we have so much in common, why do i dislike you so much? ~imalittleinsane
