I always love this night. Clive Davis sits and drops names and revels in the fact of how he recorded every hit and how he discovered Whitney Houston. It must be delightful to be as great as he is. He sure gets his jollies out of boasting how he recorded each song and what a smash it was.
I guess we should be grateful to the old bastard for finding us the woman whose career would tank when she married a druggie, became one herself, and became a joke. And let's not forget that he found Air Supply. |

Simon's choice: Wishing On A Star by Rose Royce Nicely understated start of the title line, with the look and the feel of the original. Reminds me of a Phyllis Hyman or McCoy Tyner intro, actually, which is a good thing. She's got more volume in the verse, into a more animated title line. The song was a bit too truncated, just as she was getting into it. An 8. Randy: Wow. Aiight so this is the point where I'm really seeing who's in it to win it. Very good vocal. Like Beyonce'. The run at the end was hot! Paula: Simon picked a good song for you. Beautiful job. Great way to start the show. Simon: You sang it brilliantly. Just wish we hadn't done the wicked jazz arrangement; I prefer the pure version. It actually wasn't one of your better performances. Audience: BOO! Simon: I said I didn't like the arrangement. |

Is the arrangement Jordin's fault? I know Blake likes to fuck around with his arrangements, but I didn't know that all of the contestants had control over that.
