I honestly think that survivor doesn't rely as heavily on suspense as most other reality shows do. TAR for example is almost completely unwatchable in re-run form. Survivor, however, can be rewatched hundreds of times because of the story-lines. DWTS and American Idol are also virtually un-re-watchable.

Only when the storyline focuses on the castaways and not some bullshitting overarching theme or the ridiculous concept of heroes and villains on a game show.

I'm going to disagree with you. I don't think they focus on one person in a very cartoonish way. I think they give a dynamic edit to that person in that they have episodes to hate coach and also one episode to love him. This is what they've always done. Inversely, they've had episodes to love sugar and one episode to hate her. Aside from those players, I think we were able to get to know everyone else. Strategy is boring, and I don't think the new seasons are revolving around strategy whatsoever... infact the past few episodes of this season were solely about the struggle to survive and people's mentality.

Survivor has just gotten lazy. They don't care about the people, and don't expect the audience to, so they shove mindnumbing challenges and HIIs down our throats. Because they still need actual footage of camp life, they pick out the most cartoonish thing they can find.
