The only locks right now are:
Precious, The Hurt Locker -- Best Picture
Kathryn Bigalow -- Best Director
Meryl Streep and Carey Mulligan -- Best Actress
Mo'nique-- Best Supporting Actress
Stanley Tucci, Christopher Waltz -- Best Supporting Actor
As far as Best Picture, I'm hoping for some upsets-- I loved Bright Star, as I said earlier, but think that a small film which is more likely to make a big splash is The Last Station. Helen Mirren, James McAvoy, and Christopher Plummer all seem like possible nominations from that film if it's any good (and it looks like it will be). I'm also anxious to see A Single Man and Nine.
I'm not at all interested in seeing Up (ITA with the overrated argument on this board) or Up in the Air (George Clooney=meh). "Up in the Air" looks like another angsty film about a disaffected yuppie. Yuck. "Up" will score a nomination only as a consolation for all of Pixar's previous films which were great but were passed over.
Invictus sounds like it should be amazing, but it hasn't gotten a lot of press, which has me wondering if it's going to be a complete flop. I love Morgan Freeman (and Mandela-- a great movie should be made about his life), but I usually find Clint Eastwood films far too overhyped and so I wouldn't mind it if this one isn't all it's cracked up to be.
As far as the idea that nothing has been great so far in 2009, that's because all the good films come out in November and December.
