Call the Thailand or Borneo casts stupid, but they all wanted to win and were playing for themselves. The Tocantins cast was loaded up with millionaires and people who just wanted to look good for the cameras, so they didn't care about winning. JT probably went around telling some sob story about his father dying or whatever to get sympathy.
According to an Erinn interview, J.T. told everyone he was going to use the money for college funds for his nieces, nephews, and siblings and then if there was any money left over he might buy a truck.

J.T. was definitely a deserving winner but I agree his competition was not up to par with some of the other seasons.
